The defense of @hochstenbach@openbiblio.social PhD thesis “Scholarly Communication Using the Decentralized Web” at Ghent University was a total blast. Obviously because of the mere quality of the presented research. But also because, for the first time in over 20 years, it reunited the 4 Belgians who worked together at the Los Alamos National Laboratory http://hdl.handle.net/1854/LU-01KJQ133EV7095YNBDARB6QNJ8
Truly remarkable that, at a time when everyone is talking about digital sovereignty, a European university decides to start using WhatsApp as an official communication channel.
everything he touches turns to shit
One year ago, @cni@mastodon.social Cliff Lynch passed away. In remembrance, I’m going to re-read the tribute I co-authored with @phonedudemln.bsky.social “Cliff Lynch: The Invisible Influencer in Information Infrastructure” https://ws-dl.blogspot.com/2025/04/cliff-lynch-invisible-influencer-in.html
I’m in a hotel room. Just watched half an hour of CNN. The trusted source in news. The bias in their reporting is not even remotely hidden anymore. Everything I heard was 100% Trump talking points. And Trump will obviously keep referring to CNN as fake news. Because it’s never right wing enough.
I was happy to learn that a new #Signposting library is under active development: Compass is a lightweight Java library for validating and interpreting FAIR Signposting. It comes with:
* defensive RFC 8288 model-level validation,
* FAIR Signposting Level 1 and Level 2 recipe validation,
* semantic views and Link Set (RFC 9264) processing.

Utterly depressing to watch US media pushing the perspective that the one and only problem people have with the administration is high gas prices.
You know what could help with making US news sources more trustworthy? Putting on talking heads that are not naturally or artificially good looking.
