Good news for Open Research Information!

@OpenAlex@mastodon.social is rapidly closing the gap in funding metadata coverage. We (re)used a dataset of NWO-funded papers and conclude that OpenAlex is now performing on par with Elsevier's Scopus and just slightly behind Dimensions - just a few months after the start of a Wellcome Trust-funded project to improve funding metadata.

Excited to announce I've been appointed Executive Director of the Barcelona Declaration @BarcelonaDORI@mastodon.social , (alongside my other consulting activities). We have funding for the next 3 years and will soon discuss the creation of a governance board.

Very proud of Utrecht University @utrechtuniversity@akademienl.social for choosing not to participate in the THE 2024 World University Ranking (by not supplying information).

That's how it can be done.

Is there a relationship between the metadata publishers submit to Crossref and the submission systems they use? 🤔

In this new preprint with @HLdeJonge@akademienl.social, we analyzed 153 publishers and 4 major systems to find out.

Upon last week's news that Elsevier is following Springer Nature in having abstracts removed from @OpenAlex@mastodon.social I've published a blog post looking more in detail at abstract coverage in @crossref@mastodon.online and OpenAlex, and discussing some of the implications:

Newly updated OpenAIRE graph dataset (snapshot date 2026-01-29) now available on Google Big Query as part of ORION collective https://orion-dbs.community/

Thanks @OpenAIRE@mastodon.social @OpenAIREGraph@mastodon.social for making the dataset available to share!

What's better than open research information resource? Multiple open research information resources that can be combined together!

I'm happy to participate in ORION, an effort to coordinate amongst those making ORI resources available in the cloud, with an initial focus on Google BigQuery. We are keen to coordinate with all who are interested in supporting a community effort towards availability and reusability!

Been thinking a lot about this this week. There are multiple ways (public) organizations can contribute to 'supporting, funding and coordinating' - but I am hesitant about the idea of organizations directly starting instances for people associated with the organization. I expect a more 'arms length' approach to support to be more effective and appropriate - many questions around governance here. @sarahderijcke@akademienl.social

Are rankings not a problem anymore if they're based on open data? Not exactly. But I do believe this is an important development, for threee reasons: 1) Open data provide the transparency needed to audit the data and processes used to generate specific indicators - which is crucial in deciding whether these indicators are a good fit for the specific purpose organisations might consider using them for. 1/

In conclusion, The transition of the Leiden Ranking towards open data (both in the data used and in data and algorithms made openly available) does not stand on its own, but fits into wider discussions around open research information and changes in research assessment culture, including discussions on the value of rankings themselves. /end

2/ The use of open data and code provides the opportunity to modify or expand on existing approaches to calculate indicators, for instance by broadening the set of universities and/or journals considered (also making use of the fact that OpenAlex has, by design, much broader coverage then Web of Science). 2a/

2 (cont'd)/ This could be a way to explore and potentially address existing biases, e.g. in language and geographical diversity. The use of open data allows such experiments to be conducted in the open, and for the results to be evaluated against existing indicators. /

3/ a ranking based on open data, even though in itself an improvement compared to one using closed data, is still a ranking. There are many arguments against the provision and use of rankings, especially when done without critical assessment of both their methodology and application. In this sense, open rankings should continue to be questioned as much as closed rankings. 3a/

3 (cont'd)/ Due to their open nature, open rankings do allow this questioning more, and as such, can in themselves contribute to well-grounded discussions on the nature, use and value of rankings. 3b/
