I still lurk on the r/London subreddit and came across this hilarious piece of activist art which turns a bin into a "smart glasses amnesty bin" that apparently is just across the Ray Ban store. 💅

The thing that really gets me with the Wikimedia Foundation's response to their staff wanting a union: Imagine you're charged with running the world's biggest free knowledge resource, which is only possible because of an army of nerds who love nothing more than fact-checking.
And then decide to bullshit that very crowd of people.

«"I think this is a very bad move, and the people behind Codeberg should re-consider their stance," said Armin Ronacher, creator of Flask and one of the co-founders of AI agent biz Earendil.»
Or in other words: It Is Difficult to Get a an "AI" Bro to Understand Something When His Salary Depends Upon His Not Understanding It 🤷

It was a great pleasure to write up this post about the #Codeberg's recent votes with respect to LLMs and the impact that LLM have on #FLOSS more broadly, together with @Gusted@social.linux.pizza and @fnetX@social.anoxinon.de:

Shocker, the deskilling machine successfully deskills school kids - to the tune of them being a full year behind their peers who are "left behind" by *checks notes* actually learning!

@toriver@mas.to yeah, I think it's fun to see how Californian ideology/libertarian-pilled brains can't seem to comprehend that a democratically member-run organisation, that sustains itself largely through the volunteer labor of those members, decides to put limits on what they want to spend their time on.
But ofc, that tech bros don't understand the concept of consent should be old news in 2026 🙈

«According to a study, more than two-thirds of Germans believe that their ancestors were not Nazis. Nearly 36% believe that their relatives were among the victims, and over 30% believe that their ancestors helped victims of the Nazis — for example, by hiding Jews. But this can't possibly be true. Only about 1% of Germans actively resisted.»

Now that #codeberg has manifested their anti-AI view with a 70% in favor vote (https://codeberg.org/Codeberg/org/pulls/1253) we're happy to welcome (once again) all the people which have to/want to move their repositories off Codeberg but still want to stay on a Forgejo-based instance.
Bonus: on top you'll get better uptime, faster site responses and faster CI runners - all for free :)
tl;dr: after this ToU change, keeping AI-generated code on Codeberg would violate these and repositories will be in danger of deletion.

In another edition of "are the LLM addicts okay?":
Apparently some of them think "people who weren't allowed to use unlimited resources for vibe coding on a community-run, free platform" should be counted among the victims of Nazi Germany, or something?

@abucci @toriver@mas.to I think "just fork is" is often a lazy response to systemic issues. But for Codeberg people could also actively get involved to shape policy and help managing the infrastructure.
But ofc that's a lot more effort than freeloading and hoping someone else does the work 🙈

@troed@swecyb.com @abucci @toriver@mas.to I obviously can't speak for 'the members' at large - but my impression is that many folks are quite aware and to equal amounts exasperated by how many other FOSS projects are using those tools.
But also see that the majority of CB users make quite limited use of those, as they are inherently incompatible with community values.

@dylanwolters@floss.social yeah, I personally think that this is one of the most insidious effects of LLMs: Before code (and text) were a de-facto proof of thinking about a topic, while today that link has been effectively severed if not kept at bay.

@pat_dev@social.linux.pizza @codefloe@social.tchncs.de no, it's just structurally just yet another platform that is not owned by its users - and the people running it are pretending it's a benefit.
You have outright mentioned in your first reply that being democratically organised is detrimental to decision making speed and that you are about 'code, performance and progress' - it's fine if democratic structures are 'too hard' for people, but that means again being fully depended on someone else's - here on your - good will

«Theoretical tools are now often software, whose complexity makes its behavior inscrutable to its users and puts them at risk of losing their tools to software collapse. Scientific instruments increasingly rely on built-in computers that create exactly the same issues. Finally, digital technology has enabled industrial-scale production of data, e.g. in DNA sequencing, and that technology is itself not convivial either.»

@pat_dev@social.linux.pizza @codefloe@social.tchncs.de I don't know, mate, from where I stand it looks like you don't want to play along with other people/do the work to find consensus as you want to only 'focus on the tech'.
So you first made a fork of a CI tool to be BDFL of that, and then your own off-label Codeberg with you as the BDFL as well.
Which fine, whatever. But then the model of running the thing becomes "trust me bro", not any more or less than GH et al are doing

@jaredwhite@indieweb.social @pat_dev@social.linux.pizza @codefloe@social.tchncs.de personally, I just don't see the niche for a "freemium" service that is "GitHub but on EU servers" as it feels like the worst of both worlds: You're neither a customer with the rights that such a relationship would entail, but neither do you have a right to decision making.
It just smells like the same infrastructure capture we've seen with literally every free service that's corpo-run.

I just think that "I/My company runs a thing for free that is based on donations" is a really weird model for that particular niche, might as well pay Github or Gitlab at that point and at least have some contract with guarantees

@einsiedlerspiel@todon.nl @Alejandro_P@mathstodon.xyz it's been 2-3 years that I went back to using vim as my only editor, after a long stretch with Atom/vscode (and my vim proficiency before that was never high, and still isn't).
I re-learned the basics with the vimtutor and then little by little learned more on "per need", same for enabling/using plugins. Imho a lot easier that way instead of feeling like one needs the 100 layers of complexity one _could_ do on day one!

@Alejandro_P@mathstodon.xyz @einsiedlerspiel@todon.nl FWIW: how steep the learning curve is really depends on how much of the advanced features of your existing editor you use.
I think the mistake people often make is to start out with someone elses, fully-decked out vim config, which throws a million things at you. But learning the very basics of editing/moving etc. is quite okay - and from there one can go as deep as wanted/needed.
