How LLMs Distort Our Written Language

How LLMs Distort Our Written Language

Large language models (LLMs) are used by over a billion people globally, most often to assist with writing. In this work, we demonstrate that LLMs not only alter the voice and tone of human writing but also consistently alter the intended meaning. First, we conduct a human user study to understand how people actually interact with LLMs when using them for writing. Our findings reveal that extensive LLM use led to a nearly 70% increase in essays that remained neutral in answering the topic questi

Given that Google is currently adding to messages to the top of Google Docs/sheets upselling their own services (I opened a sheet today and was asked if I wanted to use Gemini for phone calls, I think), I wonder how long it will be until we get third-party ads embedded there too, maybe specific to the content in the sheet/doc.

Yesterday/today might have been my worst work travel experience.

I drove from Champaign to O'Hare, which took 30 minutes longer than normal (2 hrs, 15 min) due to traffic problems caused by very heavy rain and water on the road, which caused severe problems at the airport too.

When I got to O'Hare, my 4 pm flight to Minneapolis was delayed to around 7 pm, along with all other flights, so I changed to the prior flight which was also delayed but only to 6, earlier than my original flight. This flight kept getting pushed back, until it was 8:45 pm, at which time, my original flight had been cancelled.

When we were ready to board around 8:15 pm, we continued being delayed because a flight attendant was missing, and then the captain and co-pilot had been on-duty their max time for the day and couldn't fly. So we were told that a new captain was identified, but wouldn't arrive until 11 pm, but no co-pilot had yet been identified.
Around 11 pm, this second flight was cancelled, and I switched to the last flight for the day, delayed to 12:45 am.

At 12:30 am, this third flight was cancelled.

If I wasn't giving an invited talk this afternoon at the #PEARC26 conference, I would have just driven home and given up on the conference, but since I was, I decided to drive 6 hours to Minneapolis overnight, and I got here about 6:30 this morning.

After a short nap, today I'll give my talk, and then tomorrow, I'll drive the 7 1/2 hours back to Champaign.

Sharing from Bluesky:

Today we're launching the Open Source for Science Fund, a new multi-donor philanthropic fund by Renaissance Philanthropy, seeded by Biohub and Wellcome Trust, with support from the Kavli Foundation and @researchsoft@fosstodon.org

https://os4science.org/news/open-source-for-science-fund-launch/

From imaging the universe to modeling life at the molecular scale, science is built on open source software maintained by scientific communities.

That infrastructure is systemically underfunded and not yet designed for AI-native use.

Our inaugural call, "Open Source for the Life Sciences," is seeking proposals from software maintainers whose work supports data-intensive research and AI-driven discovery in the life sciences.

Two tracks: up to $250K for domain-specific tools, up to $1M for foundational libraries.

If you build the tools science runs on, we want to hear from you. https://os4science.org

It's nice to get a very detailed, clearly human-written review of a paper, even if it means there's potentially a lot to change for the camera-ready version.

I need to keep remembering in my own reviews that I'm writing as much for the author as for the PC chairs and other reviewers.

Looking at OpenReview.net, used by AAAI. What a good example of the failings of AI...

I can't update my name to how I prefer it, or to change the email address associated with a submission made by a collegue, as far as I can tell, nor can he.

Also, I see a submission to another conference associated with my record that's not actually mine, but likely a different Daniel Katz. But there's no way to manually make changes that I can find.

At #FOR2026 yesterday, I learned from Carole Goble that

Trust (in another person or organization) can be defined as their:

(Credibility + Reliability + Intimacy) / Self-Orientation

which is from Cathrin Stöver - Chief Communications Officer GÉANT (and in turn, is from Charles H. Green)

It's interesting to me that no one yet (of the first 5 speakers at #FOR2026, a conference on open research) has provided a link to their slides. There's a bunch of interesting things here, but it's hard to follow-up on non-published (non-open?) slides

@khinsen @k9ox I mostly agree with your framing. I went to a reproducibility workshop about 9 years ago (https://www.mrsec.harvard.edu/2017NSFReliability/cw/report.php) that had a bunch of examples where the lack of reproducibility of results led to new scientific understanding.

If you are interested in any aspect of #ResearchSoftware, including #RSEng, #funding, #publishing, #training, #metascience, #policy, etc., please consider submitting a proposal to and/or attending #IRSC26 (immediately before #RSECon26 in Sheffield, UK, in Sept). We're trying to bring all elements of the #ResearchSoftware community together

@chartgerink@akademienl.social Ok, thanks - My submission got moved to be part of a panel, so I don't get to present slides (and didn't get the slide instructions). But in any case, it would be useful to have these while the speakers are presenting, rather than having to try to take pictures of the screen before the speaker moves on to the next slide, or having to remember what was interesting to follow-up on. I don't see any reason that speakers couldn't do the upload to zenodo before they speak and provide the link to their slides on the first/last slide at least.
