#Frijoles #Fire now reported to be 3,000 acres. Probably 4,000 by morning—wanna bet? The smoke is now MUCH STRONGER outside. Air was yellow-brown at sunset. Kinda unbreathable. #santafe #newmexico

@jneen Tesla’s lack of QA care and attention forces hypervigilence on its drivers, given the frequent software updates where you never know what the new stupid, useless “features,” and fixes, if any, have done to the UI/UX and driving experience. You ignore the changes at your—and your passengers’—and other people’s—risk. My solution: wait weeks/months before accepting a software update. Of course, this only puts off the hypervigilence drama.

Ok how about this for a science experiment?

7-10 days ago we noticed someone had thrown a bag of chips out of their car onto our property.

Chips scattered near open bag.

We left everything alone overnight to see what the animals / bugs would take.

Over a week later, STILL ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TAKEN!

🤷‍♂️

I will never not be baffled by #NewMexico drivers, men and women, old and young, who come up from behind, speeding, and without hestation glide over the double-yellow line, pass, and speed on down the road.

The Age of Unaccountability touches everyone, not just oligarchs—and everyone’s loving it.

A high-level politician in #NewMexico told me yesterday that every time the price-per-barrel of #oil goes up by another $1, the state of New Mexico, which gets royalties on the 800+ million barrels produced annually, makes an additional $50 million.

The war on Iran is fantastic for New Mexico.

@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place Investors who’ve poured trillions into anything related to so-called “AI” demand a return. Companies are under intense pressure to deliver that return. Many will fail. It means companies will resort to, stoop to, desperate, thoughtless attempts at lock-in in pursuit of profit. I think this latest nVidia news is a play for consumer and game industry lock-in, even though the public smells the enshittification right away.

Powerful, inspiring, absolutely infuriatng #documentary about a free-spirited Iranian woman running for election and winning in her village—and all the lazy-ass no-good violent patriarch dudes who will stop at nothing to prevent her from getting things done.

Could be America in a generation or less.

See this.

@jeffcutsinger@tenforward.social I did 32 fucking years of research and writing at ~$250K personal expense in order to get my tech history book, The Friendly Orange Glow, done. Pantheon, an imprint of one of the plaintiffs in this case, published my book in 2017. I really don’t find it cool that pirates have illegal PDFs of my book on all the shit sites you list, I don’t care what Doctorow says: support the author and buy, don’t steal, their fucking book, costing same as a few microbrewery beers ffs.

There are some who would argue #Hawaii IS another country, still, and it was the US that just flat-out stole it with the backing of armed Marines in the late 1880s, and they’re still mad as hell

Glaring continuity error in PROJECT HAIL MARY?

Gosling is at a table in a meeting. His wire-rim glasses barely dangling on one ear. He's talking to the woman in charge of the PHM project. Cut to him. Her. Him. Her. Him. Her.

In one of the him shots, NO GLASSES. Then, they're BACK. 👀

Ok well PROJECT HAIL MARY imho turned out to be a very mixed, very messy bag.

I’ll put it this way:

1.0 unit of PROJECT HAIL MARY =
0.001 units of THE MARTIAN

In a word: INTERFELLER.

Absolutely BLOWS MY MIND that the four-trillion-dollar #Apple corporation doesn't care to fix what would have been a company-destroying bug 20yrs ago but today is considered contrary to acceptable business strategy, namely, moving one's owned MP3 files from one's Mac to one's iPhone, which causes the iPhone's music library data to be trashed. Incredible!

How dare a customer not use our STREAMING service!

We are sooooo forever past "rip mix burn".... sigh

@SpockResists@mastodon.social I’d argue those images depict something broader and more general than merely Musk’s derangement of Twitter: they also depict what happens to any VC-funded, publicly-traded social media business, and that is, they allow weaponization of the platform in order to boost profits. We’ve seen the same thing w/ Zuckerberg and Facebook over the years.

Psychologists could write dissertations on that phenomenon. And they should.

@attacus@aus.social I spend more hours each week listening to podcast interviews than any other form of content. All I used to do was listen to music in the car. Now it’s podcasts from the moment I hop in to the moment I get out. In-depth discussions allow nuance, humor, insight that are impossible (even heresy) in, say, the cable TV world. I even now pay more $ annually on podcast subscriptions than newspaper or magazine subscriptions combined. Far more.

@andybaio@xoxo.zone Missing so many things, and numerous cases of non-firsts, which is par for the course since "Internet" is the filter. Which means there's no PLATO, no chat rooms (Talkomatic, long before IRC), instant messaging (TERM-talk, long before AOL Instant Messenger), message forums (PLATO Notes, 7-8 years before USENET), PLATO emoticons (years before Internet emoticons). No mention of COCONET's emoticons which were essentially the first Emoji, in 1987, 11 years before Japan. Et cetera.
