I saw a man with their family outside the train station, wearing an Arch Linux t-shirt. Somehow it looked like a fedi thing

@almet@tutut.delire.party apparently there is an effort to have this feature in the official app https://aboutsignal.com/news/signal-desktop-without-a-mobile-phone-standalone-version-in-development/

@adamsteer@mapstodon.space what a coincidence that this happens right when a big IBM project about "geo-AI" is allowed to join OSGeo

@joeroe@archaeo.social its telling that you had to write it yourself (I can't remember if it's needed for other packages you've written like stratigraph) and there's nothing else doing this thing. Do you know how it's treated in rcarbon?
I have this idea that radiocarbon and dendrochronology libraries should have a common set of calendars, like the era package for R.

@kfitz @hello sadly, this comes from the top of the pyramid (as bad as the metaphor is). KC is based on Wordpress, and Wordpress leadership now actively promote AI as a foundational tool for the future of the web bla bla bla 😰 https://wordpress.org/news/2025/12/sotw-2025/

As far as I can understand, dendrochronology libraries like dplPy https://opendendro.org/python/ treat years as simple integers, even if they're working with pandas DataFrames. This is quite frustrating.

@olasd alright, just when I had started using uv ... not yet added as a dev dependency however. The thing is, Python is completely and utterly lost in the big AI battle. CPython has already accepted agent based contributions iirc. It's not surprising if we look at how instrumental Python libraries were for the early wave of the current LLM shitstorm. It's plainly sad in a way.

@joeroe@archaeo.social @nfrerebeau@archaeo.social the problem I see with with radiocarbon in particular is that it goes from ~53.000 years BP to the present, and post-bomb calibration treats years as decimal numbers. So "deep" is important but doesn't cover the whole range.
It would require a collaborative effort of some sort ...

@chpietsch@fedifreu.de @geertlovink@mastodon.social I'm certainly tired of technology solutions to political problems, but I find this text embarassing for the naivety and blind faith in "code" as a magic tool for freedom.
