Father, tinkerer, game developer.

This is a rambling account.

design of all sorts, game dev and programming, meditation, 3D printing, hobby electronics, life logging, urban planning, smart homes, philosophy, homeschooling, music creation, sleep, generative art and procgen.

I was a developer/designer/team lead on Don't Starve and Oxygen Not Included, which I'm quite proud of.

I'm on a big urbanism kick right now, let's talk about that!

🌟 feel free to comment on old posts, I like it 🌟

No, friends, voting is not democracy. Creating a just society for all is democracy. And technical usefulness sure as heck isn't either 😆

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange @accidentalciso@infosec.exchange My recent feelings on these sorts of "global vs local" moral problems, is that the are two lanes, and what's important is that there are people fighting in each lane, and that, when someone from one lane explicitly ask for space, people in the other lane try and give it to them, but everyone needs to acknowledge that a balance is required and that we need to cooperate to solve the biggest problems. So in this case I'd say, if you feel like you can do the most good where you are with what you have, then claim that lane and go for it. But don't stop cooperating with and advocating for those fighting in the other lane. (And/or move to the other lane if it seems that more people are needed there.)

RE: https://dair-community.social/@emilymbender/116885366454908070 Very interesting paper! For me, the stand out part was section 6, which finally filled in the holes in my understanding of how these systems "steal labor", a phrase which I had often come across but could only loosely understand the concrete meaning of. Really ties into the colonialist aspect too, which has been on my mind lately. Anything in particular stand out to you? (The full preprint is available from the author in the thread.)

When people ask me what the phrase "artificial intelligence" means, my short answer is, it means "venture capitalists, give me some money". But OUP asked me for a longer answer, given here and summarized in the section headings: https://doi.org/10.1093/9780197852712.003.0067

Okay friends: I need some book recommendations! I'm diving into the whole #urbanism thing, but coming at it as a game designer. I'm looking for awesome books to read, but especially ones that look at the models and systems of cities and how they function in the modern era.

Though, I'm also trying to be a better citizen so advocacy and political and historical book recs won't go unappreciated 😁

Unicycle day 7: after about 45 minutes of falling, I finally clicked on a piece of advice I got early on: to always mount falling forward, like you're already rolling. It turns out stopping and catching your balance from this is easy, but getting going from still is hard!

One "beneficial residue" that I'm hoping outlasts the AI crash, is that more and more tools and systems are adding CLI support, even to webapps! The task scheduling software we're using at work just added a CLI command, and as an obsessive scripter, this is so amazing!

Okay! Starting the next one!

I'm very excited to read this! It's always mentioned everywhere and was the top rec when I asked for urbanism books.

And hooeee is it stout! 585 pages!!

I'm simultaneously thrilled that it's serious, but also intimidated. Wish me luck!

@bit101@mstdn.social All lovely 🤩 Curious, what algorithm does it use? What kind of configuration? I haven't written this kind of code in a long time, but I recall many of my efforts at reuse were resisted, even something as simple as a particle often wanted a shape or api specific to a project, and it didn't feel right to create uberclasses.

So in the neverending chain of "google screws up everything good by continuing to poke it", the "Now Playing" feature on pixel phones got a big update, and now it just... doesn't recognize songs unless I explicitly ask it? That was the whole point, that's what was great about it. Siiiigh...

@julie@eigenmagic.net Yeah, there was a pretty influential programming textbook called Design Patterns that was apparently based on it, that's how I originally heard about A Pattern Language. I'm always so in awe of people who can look at the world like that. It's a skill I admire so much! In any case, you reminded me to check the library again since moving cities, and I now have a hold on it, thank you 😂

@TodePond@mas.to I'm developing an indie game and was going through the usual crisis of "how am I gonna market this thing?" I was lamenting this to a friend, saying how I just hated "putting myself out there" and it felt so misaligned. I didn't want to make a cool video and go viral! I wanted people to see what I was _doing_. She said one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me: "You're like Mr. Rogers, you want to invite people into your living room and show them all this fun stuff you've found!" And it was a huge turning point for me. Now I invite people to see what I'm working on, invite them to see my process and mistakes and WIPs and share their thoughts and consider their feelings and let them show me when I've gone wrong, and when I complete a feature it's usually just a final quick note on the end of a long thread. The journey is the reason. The only thing that's not perfect is, it's so private. Fuck marketing, I'm just so happy living exposed like this I want to share it more! But I've been struggling to figure out what that looks like beyond my virtual living room. And so: Thank you for your post! It's encouraging to me that you are normalizing sharing scrappy fiddles, and now I too desperately want to normalize sharing scrappy fiddles! 🙏♥️🙏

@bit101@mstdn.social Do you get one circle at a time, feeding the existing ones back in, or do you provide the inital constraints and get a whole bunch out? Is the circle a Very Standard thing in your framework? Is it an abstract circle or does it know about drawing? Heh, I'm suddenly very curious about this. I'm just think about how back when I was using processing, everything was "draw" oriented, and so maybe I had no data to reuse against. I think my approach would be so different now! I really gotta get back to it sometime...
