I like to think that my 45 years of reporting on technology and business has left me sceptical rather than cynical but the behaviour of some tech companies is such that sometimes readers might be better served by the latter approach.

I’m not convinced this is a wise announcement at a time the best brains in New Zealand politics are thinking about how they can deal with rapacious supermarkets. At the very least it won’t help their PR whitewashing. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/1646794/woolworths-confirms-plan-to-move-130-jobs-to-australia

Woolworths confirms plan to move 130 jobs to Australia

Woolworths New Zealand is going ahead with plans to cut 130 jobs in New Zealand and move them to Australia.

I’ve said this before and will say it again. If you think social media is so toxic that it damages 16-year-olds then it damages everyone. You don’t magically become immune on your 17th birthday. Either ban it for everyone or not at all.

I've learnt over the years is that if you can isolate and define the problem you're trying to solve clearly enough, it's a lot easier to find the answer. Sometimes it IS the answer. This is what you do when you write an AI prompt. If you write a good enough prompt you may already have the answer.

To be honest I'm slightly surprised the local peasants are not turning up at Woolworths and New World stores with pitchforks and burning torches.

This is not my area of expertise, but I can read and I can do arithmetic, from what I read and the numbers I see, it's clear to me that supplies of oil products are almost certainly going to run out unless the Iran war wraps up now. It strikes me that our government is in denial.

Today was my worst ever run rate at a Repair Cafe, almost everything that came across my table was unrepairable. Also noted how much busier the Cafe is now the economy is ticking down again.

I'm not sure how to articulate this thought in a way that is inoffensive, but I sometimes wonder if being an Act party member or voter is a sign of metal illness.

@spudooli@mastodon.nz @paulh@cloudisland.nz You also have to be careful you don't bring half the ceiling down as they are often spring mounted. I have done my own replacements before now, I know what I'm doing, but it's not sometime I'd recommend and I think you're automatically not insured if anything goes wrong if you don't use someone with a certificate. In fact we have one of the bathroom lights out right now and I decided to wait until the next time we need a sparky for something else.

These kind of numbers are often publicised, but does anyone ever actually follow up to see if Microsoft delivers on its huge promises? I used to do this when working as a staff journalist and found the numbers never even remotely stacked up.

I have written a series of neutral, basic backgrounders on New Zealand telecommunications that won’t trouble non-technical readers. Hope you find them useful.

Here’s the one on submarine cables:

New Zealand is geographically isolated and depends on submarine cables to connect to the world. They carry everything: voice, internet data, streaming video and cloud traffic.

My team, Chelsea, is going such through a terrible patch that I thought I might at least get enjoyment out of seeing Tottenham relegated, but I really don't. It's just a sadder, more dysfunctional, hide-behind-the-sofa mess than our sad dysfunctional mess.

@Kristie@mastodon.nz Here's the part I find mind-boggling: Before the pandemic I had to go to Singapore to visit one of the cable laying ships, spent a day on board. Amazingly they can carry enough cable to cross an ocean (maybe not NZ to the US, but certainly to an island halfway across) and the cable is normally only 1 or 2 meters either side of the intended route the whole way.
