My wife kept her maiden name when we married, but my first wife has retained my surname all these years later. So when I answer the landline to a telemarketing call who asks to speak to Mrs B, I truthfully answer that she doesn't live here At the vet, I answer to Mr R as our cat is registered under her name ETA: I should have said under English law, but I don't think the other nations differ

@Gamrok I was employed by Acornsoft at the point that Elite was being produced (I was actually the play tester), and we knew how good that game was by the standards of the day. Management (primarily DJD) was happy to spend on that art and on the novella (by Robert Holdstock) that was in the box. IIRC there was one copy sold for every four BBC-B micros out there, and given a lot of those were owned by schools, that was amazing market penetration

@ecoscore @lydiaconwell @cmconseils Are you trying to make it unreadable, or readable but with different data in it? Because QR Code is going to insist on much more than a handful of dots for the first, and a sizable proportion of all of them for the second. Just look at the pattern differences between adjacent tables (Assuming the case where it includes your table number)

@golgaloth@writing.exchange @cstross@wandering.shop When I worked in Dundee, not only further north than Edinburgh but actually north of it, I had this problem too. OTOH it's a south facing city, and when I was commuting into work along the shoreline, it was enough for the winter low light not to affect me too much

So home from Eastercon at the NEC Metropol, and our cat, when he finally wandered in, was glad to see us

One thing about our hotel room that puzzled me was that it was single glazed. There were two double power sockets each side of the bed, and those sockets had a total of 6 USB-A power sockets, so the room has obviously been refurbished at some point, without actually getting double glazing. Perhaps that's down to the balcony door framing

@mrotteveel @kevlin Indeed. That 09:50 figure being to the nearest 5 minutes is not, of itself, a problem. It will be calculated on the basis of the courier leaving the depot at time x, and having a number of journey segments of predictable length. So it's the earliest time that it might arrive. The 2 hour, or 5 hour, finger-in-the-air value? Yeah, it's adding that on and keeping the precision that's the problem The expected arrival curve is nothing like a Bell curve

@bellinghwoman @jackwilliambell There's also a Nescafé Dolce Gusto machine with coffee capsules I have with me some Nespresso-compatible capsules we got in Luxembourg for the apartment there. Our room in the hotel in Basel a couple of weeks ago didn't have a Nespresso machine, and though @feorag 's room did, our capsules weren't her preference. So I still have them, and I brought them because the coffee machine here might have been Nespresso Anyone want some capsules. 3 weeks old

@tenkoman @cstross Hmm, 'cease' and 'seize' aren't usually homophones in English - 'cease' basically had an ß sound at the end - but frankly you write better English than I do German (My wife and I have a Munich-origin honorary 'daughter', and she and her husband are also fluent in English these days, as are their kids who are trilingual English/German/Irish)

@mfdeakin @mattblaze It's easy enough to decide. Are hotels interested in security or in cost? If the room number was on the key, it's extra cost to manufacture, it's extra cost because you'd need twice as many to allow for losses, it's extra cost because you'd need racks to store them, it's extra cost because reception would have to sort returned keys So instead of having the room number on the key, it's quickly handwritten on the card folder, and you'd never lose that with the key
