We report: walking away from the city and into the countryside, the streetlights are spread further and further apart. We see glowing eyes in the bushes, and the trees are dark, loom high over our heads. We overestimated the time we had before nightfall. It smells like rain.

We report: there is a bit of wind, and a lot of sunshine, humidity as well as we get to the later part of the afternoon. We are getting familiar with this feeling again - autumn and spring, when we are not sure whether we are hot or cold, or both at the same time.

We report: this is pre-dawn. Under the glare of the streetlight, we hear a robin‘s song. The blue of this twilight is vibrating at a strange frequency that we cannot place. It seems to be a shade we had never seen before, solid and fuzzy at the same time. Our ears are buzzing.

We report: gorse and heather are in full bloom now, and the hills smell like honey. Also, because it rained so much in the previous week, we can make out some brand new autumn smells. They are an odd, but familiar mix of rotting wood, damp chalk, and crisp nights.

We report: there are flocks of birds in the sky at nightfall again. The days are still warm, but they are getting short, enough that we have to look out for the height of the sun in the late afternoons. Our export reminds us that the autumn equinox is in a few days.

We report: our expert is too busy catching up on solar weather reports to deign join us for the sunset - it appears that they had missed the news of a minor geomagnetic storm. Down here, even through the highs and lows of atmospheric pressure, the storm clouds pass quietly.

We report: we feel completely dwarfed by the clouds today. Every time we look up, they seem to get taller. We think they might be absorbing the other, smaller clouds when we are not looking, and there are plenty more of those. The sun manages to come through the chaos.

We report: it rained a lot, and our clothes have yet to dry completely. Even then, although we can feel our damp socks in our shoes, it feels like a new day when the sun comes out. It is brighter for the way it lives in puddles, in raindrops that are still suspended to the trees.

We report at nightfall, ahead of the cold front we are expecting in the morning: the wind is rising. The atmospheric pressure is still dropping. The stars are twinkling through the clouds; the humidity is creating halos around them. The few raindrops are flying in the breeze.

We report: the sunflowers have all begun to wilt. They are all looking at the ground. We can see their seeds starting to appear behind the florets. It is September now; even on days when it is hot, the sun is getting lower, which means so should the sunflowers.

We report: late in the afternoon, we see a large blanket of clouds sweep across the whole width of the sky. Everywhere we look, it keeps pushing in, getting thicker as it goes. Later on, it starts losing its contours in the dim dusk light, but we know it is still there.

We report: we see half a dozen sunrises on the train. The sun emerges from behind the clouds, casting an orange glow across the whole sky, then the clouds swallow it back. Minutes later, another place, the shape of the clouds has changed, but it happens again the exact same way.

We report: the sun is flattening itself against the horizon as best as it can. The shock of red is hypnotising us, keeping us rooted to the ground while we watch it go down. It grows redder and redder as it sinks into the earth, even when only a few embers remain.

We report: we do let our eyes get used to the darkness for half an hour, and we remember to only use red lights. We do it the right way, but the moon is bright behind the trees, the sky is still full of smoke, and so it turns out that the crickets are much louder than the stars.

We report right at the end of sunset, almost exactly missing the sun. Rising in its stead in the belt of Venus, the moon slowly goes from pink to orange. As we try to keep up with it, bats fly by our face, always narrowly missing it. The heat of the day is not leaving.

We report: late afternoon, the sun is disappearing behind the cliffs. On the coast trail, in the shade of the trees, the path ahead is already a little too dark. There is a lot of humidity here, rising from the ocean, but also from a thin stream winding among horsetail.

We report: we had a busy, fast day, until we sat down here below the sky. Though it is somewhat windy, the clouds seem to be moving at their slowest, and within minutes we found our breathing trying to match the same pace. The sun is quietly setting at the other end of the sky.

We report after the last train, in the empty station. We punched in the code for a can of iced tea on the vending machine, and it came out lukewarm. We shared it with our expert while the stars rose from the ground, the fields before us unfathomable in the twilight.

We report: there is a lot of convection going on for the early morning, lifting up the clouds much higher than where we are used to seeing them at this hour. We feel like we missed out on a lot of weather already, which is an unpleasant note on which to start the day.

We report: of course, we see the moon on a night when we were not expecting it, cloudy as the day was. It is also at a time when we are practically falling asleep on our feet. We do stay for a few minutes to watch the clouds wrap the moon in mother-of-pearl, again and again.

We report: as we were walking, the sky ahead of us was a milky white, certainly nothing like rain. We stopped for a sip of water, and finally noticed the clouds pooling behind us. We almost immediately felt a raindrop on our cheek, the wind pushing our hair into our face.

We report: the morning clouds are slowly dissipating, and the light that they were catching is now spilling out onto the ground, puddles of sunshine everywhere. We shall soon pause our cloud-watching session, as our eyes are watering from the brightness.

We report: something has gotten in the air - smoke, sand, humidity, the whole lot - and it has captured the sun some hours before dusk. A veil is drawn across the sky. There is a bit of a chill there, or at least, what counts as one these days, a little shiver in the half-light.

We report: for a while, as we walk down the street, the buildings and trees are too tall to let us get a good look, but the sunset’s glow is everywhere. It is incredibly damp, the amount of humidity barely under the point of saturation; sometimes, we feel a lone raindrop.

We report: we cannot find any clouds today, but it is windy enough that we do not feel completely crushed by the weight of the sun. We watch the swallows play some sort of musical chairs game on the phone lines, to the sound of dry ferns swaying in the breeze.

We report: once a large, single cloud, we have watched the steam get carved out into fine lace. These new clouds are as much about the emptiness they are wrapped around as the steam itself. In time, the bits of clouds keep getting smaller until we cannot point them out anymore.

We report: threads of light are trailing after the sunset, and the dry air is becoming more breathable. It has felt like noon all day, the intensity of the sun, the narrow, sharp shadows. Our expert, remarkably, manages to feel a little cold when a light breeze shakes the wheat.

We report: it is easy, with the clouds laid out like this, to think of the sky as this geological time scale; see this Precambrian altocumulus pushed up by the neighbouring volcanic activity. See the cirrocumulus shale pushed up against the salt dome, unable to ride further.

We report: mid-morning, the sun turns from light source to a heat lamp, specifically pointing to the back of our neck. We walk close to the walls, in the slivers of shade that live there, and those are still much cooler in comparison. We sometimes find wind in the wider streets.

We report: we start heading into the evening with the clouds, and the light behind the haze is becoming greyer before it can turn blue. Some other day, some other year, this could be rain, but it is not so easy today - even though we cannot help but look for it.

We report: with the apparition of asperitas clouds, even the more discrete ones, we still unconsciously expect a big storm, or at least big rain later on. In the end, today, like most of the times we’ve encountered asperitas, they dissolve without much of a fuss.

We report: we can feel the land breeze blowing against our back, and still no stars. At this point in time, we should be able to see Arcturus, Spica, Capella, or at the very least, Venus. It seems that, unbeknownst to us, some invisible clouds have appeared since sunset.

We report: it got very windy during the afternoon, sudden gusts that had us looking up every few minutes. The sound of the rush of air in the dry brush is sharp, and loud, arresting in the way things out of our control can be. We still hear it as we are trying to fall asleep.

We report: after the bit of rain that we had yesterday, the night sky is clearer than it had been in some weeks, much less hazy. We leave the constellation names aside, and let ourselves sit there and pretend each moving, blinking satellite in the sky is a shooting star.

We report: when we get to the shore in the blue hour, the gulls pay us no mind, their shrieks too loud in our morning ears. The sand under our feet is dry, but feels liquid for how cold it is. The sky is opaque, waiting for some pink to bleed through in the next half hour.

We report: no rain, it barely feels humid, and the mammatus pass over us as though following a large storm we never saw. Over our head, the structures that had created the contours of a map slowly disintegrate. Perhaps we intruded on a rehearsal for something larger.

We report: we wait and wait for the rain, and once we stop waiting and hoping, the rain comes. Immediately, with the sky heavy, and the air saturated with water, we feel lighter. It goes on like this for hours, and even when it stops, the sky remains overcast. We breathe easier.

We report: now that the temperatures are closer to the seasonal average, the sky has gotten more familiar to us. It is not so much about specific clouds, but rather the diversity, and the changes, the uncertainty. We realise we are not very fond of the certainty of a clear sky.

We report on the horizon: a weak imitation of a squall line is helpfully displaying stages of the lifecycle of cumulonimbus, and in chronological order, too. Our expert finds it a valuable teaching moment, and spends some time pointing out the calvus and capillatus species.

We report: we are expecting a clear sky throughout the day, but at sea, early morning, the horizon is nowhere to be found. Through the fog, the light is dull as to make the ocean look solid. We lean over to look more closely, but the surface of the water is utterly impenetrable.

We report: there is a warm bit of wind tonight, but in comparison to the daytime temperatures, it feels like a crisp one. We find goosebumps on our arms. All of the outside smells have been stripped down to their earthiest components: hot dust, dry grass, salt.

We report: there was rain for a few hours in the morning, and then it did not get much warmer. Now, at sunset, we can still find beads of water on leaves here and there. It gets a little cold, too, enough for a jacket, but we wait until our expert gets the sniffles to go home.

We report: it is early evening, and the sun’s journey through the atmosphere is getting longer and longer. The heat has made us feel sleepy, and we are finding it difficult to care about anything but the movements of the clouds. We are here for hours, in this specific moment.

We report at sunset: it is a rare night when we feel perfectly content, and perhaps even relieved, in watching the sun go down. Not an ounce of melancholy in our heart as the sky darkens. Our expert is putting water out for the birds amidst a chorus of crickets.

We report: we watched rain approach on the radar for half an hour, but as it got close, we realised most of it had evaporated on the way. We were able to count the raindrops, more of a pitter than a pitter-patter. Ultimately, we did lose a few degrees, a tear into this hot day.

We report: up north, the thunderstorms of this afternoon have found a home over the coast, hovering there for hours. While sleep escapes us, we track the path of lightning in the air. We sometimes also find the moon and the stars in and out of the clouds.

We report: at last, the sky bears tidings of changing weather. Cirrus and cirrocumulus, our expert reminds us, often precede a cold front, perhaps even a squall line. We hold hope for at least a little rain to clear the air; for now, the clouds keep on slowly aggregating.

We report: when the sky is this intensely blue, it tends not to stay that way. The clouds are pushing up like daisies, with a sort of boundless impetus we envy them. All of this will surely lead to a less blue sky eventually, but for now, the fragile balance holds.

We report: on the approach of the clouds, we feel weighed down, finding it hard to move. There is a sense that we are seeing something we should not. It gets very windy, warm and dry. Once we are under the storm, and it starts to rain, we cannot make out its contours anymore.
