About the only good thing about #rampocalypse is that people suddenly remembered that neither memory nor storage comes for free. I again see people pushing for software with lower memory usage. Which is unusual when for the past 3 decades people basically argued that 6 months down the road a hardware upgrade will solve all memory and storage problems.

@glyph @xgranade @whitequark Yes, it's people seeing that fascism in Germany and Italy is en vogue again, and try to replicate it in Switzerland. I'm glad the majority still thinks that this is a bad idea. Most of these people get the holy smite by their peers. Unfortunately, not all of them do.

@johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz While it is true, that these clocks are compared to other NMI's clocks world wide, reestablishing a time scale is not easy and not something that can be done quickly. Especially not for NIST that is pretty isolated from other NMI (too far away from everyone). If they have to start from scratch it would take several days during which there is no official time in the US. And no official time would implicate that stock exchanges have to close... As I said, there are economic effects

I find it quite interesting to note, that something like, which celestial to use and how to use them is not something that is completely done, even today. Even though we have been doing these observations for centuries and have very precise measurements for almost two centuries.

@sarahtaber@mastodon.online One of the things that are hard to wrap one's head around is, how backwards the US banking system is. It's basically stuck in a dystopian, balkanized version of the 80s. No general wire transfer protocol that is easily accessible to normal people. No easy but secure electronic payment system (no, credit cards aren't secure). No integration into the global banking system. Not even a unified bank account number system.
It really boggles the mind.

Homöopathie wird so sehr verdünnt, dass vom ursprünglichen "Wirkstoff" nur noch 1 Molekül pro 1000 bis 1'000'000 Flaschen übrig bleibt. Dh die allermeisten Flaschen haben nichts ausser Wasser drinnen. Zum Teil ist es wahrscheinlicher im Lotto zu gewinnen als ein Molekül in der Flasche zu haben.
Oder um meinen ehemaligen Chemielehrer zu zitieren: "Nicht gegen Homöopathie, aber da ist nichts drin".

@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk @johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz There are two major entities that keep time in the US: NIST and USNO. Both have sites in Colorado and near Washington DC. I don't know the exact structure of the time infrastructure of NIST. But USNO keeps their primaries near DC and has their secondaries at Fort Collins. So, at the very least, USNO should be able to keep their UTC and sync NIST if necessary. But it would be still a major bump in legal time and time distribution within the US.

While it is true that many companies/institutions keep their own time, many have a requirement (legal or otherwise) to stay within certain bounds of their country's implementation of UTC. This means any independent clock has to be regularly checked against UTC(country) to ensure it is within these bounds.

TLDR: It doesn't seem anything major happened: Though the mention of a 4µs time step is quite. concerning. I don't know whether he means the NTP servers only or the clocks themselves. The former would be a non-issue. The latter not so much. But apparently their site at Ft Collins took over the critical time distribution infrastructure part. So no issues there.

@johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz Now, what happens if a country loses its implementation of UTC or cannot distribute it?
For a few hours, nothing will happen, because all who depend on UTC have a clock that copies it. But after a few hours/days, the clocks will start to drift apart and the synchronization, that everyone relies on, will be lost and systems will fail.
And mind you, because the system has been set up to synchronize to NIST directly, we can't synchronize the clocks between each other.

@dgoldsmith You seem to be knowledgeable on this topic. Could you explain why we do not just compensate for gravitational red shift on the moon the same way we do for the various NMI labs that are at different altitudes and thus run at slightly different rates? Why do we need LTC when just using UTC with the correct definition of the second (i.e. defined at zero gravitational field) would be sufficient?
