It's really hard to beat this for a practical, worked example of how modern CPU/memory architectures affect performance. It describes the issues with (and corresponding solutions for) a simple matrix transpose:

RE: @GDCPresoReviews@mastodon.gamedev.place
Very good thread/talk.
I've been thinking about this recently. We seem to have spent much of the last ten years making things crazy complicated for coders in pursuit of often minimal performance gains. Vulkan/DX12, strict aliasing, UB in C++, etc. Is software eating itself?

@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place I'm lucky enough to go to a fair few TV previews through BAFTA, in their big theatre with a high-quality projector/audio system, and to be honest it's not the worst idea. Most TV stuff these days is shot at a quality bar that easily holds up on the big screen.

@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place The movie industry is in way worse shape than the games industry unfortunately :(. The only movies that reliably make money these days are kids films and horror movies.
Lots of talk of repurposing screens to show quality TV/streaming series instead.

@floooh@mastodon.gamedev.place It is indeed, it's in the valleys just to the north east of Machynlleth.
I'm grateful it's not named after the unit of speed, all the sonic booms would get a little tedious 😁

@darkgriffin It gets worse. There are 5 different knobs in each UI set, and six of these UI sets overall corresponding to various discrete element sizes, 60% - 200%.
That's almost 4000 pngs of knobs.
I guess when all you have is a hammer...

@neilhenning @Humus I mean, there was a lot of that, plus the Orbanites(?) control 90% of the media, plus there were Russia/USA-funded anti-Ukraine/EU posters blanketing various towns.
But as it turns out, not nearly enough! 🥳

@jpoh @sinbad I hope so. The insanity that is iOS 26 is actively preventing me from buying a new phone, even though it's well past time, and I'd love a better camera. (Still on a 13 mini.)
Ironic given that their entire software ecosystem is supposed to be in support of flogging you pricey hardware.

@neilhenning @sinbad @jpoh That's positive to hear given the stories about further slow-downs I've been reading. (Less relevant to a new phone I guess but it means I'm unlikely to 'upgrade' the current one.) Maybe they -- gasp -- spent spent some time on optimisation post-beta, Snow-Leopard style.

@dotstdy@mastodon.social Oh it's clearly not going away, what's done is done, and we're tacking back to (IMHO) some PSO-free sanity. I'm just increasingly left feeling like, was a lot of this initial complexity ultimately worth the cost.
Sadly we don't seem to be seeing any similar moves when it comes to the seemingly endless aliasing/UB/language 'feature' train.
