My recent knits have been hats and scarves and leg warmers. Take them off the needles, block them, job done. I’ve just finished knitting a cardigan. There’s a huge amount of sewing up. I HATE SEWING!

@MartinEscardo Way back in the day, when undergraduate projects were in Fortran IV, the big issue in computer science was how to make calculations more efficient. But they gave up on that and threw memory and power at it. Bloatware running on bloatmachines.

@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space @ehurtley@pdx.social @Nentuaby@wandering.shop I once asked a sponsor for artwork to make a online movie advert. They *faxed* me their yellow pages entry. I made the ad and it’s one I’m quite proud of.

@pluralistic@mamot.fr We ran a video company from our rural home. The location was handy to deliver tapes to the city. We sent broadcasters full bandwidth sports highlights on a 512k up “broadband” connection, sending in chunks so that if one failed we’d have less to redo. We’d start in the afternoon after the edit, and first thing next morning I’d rush into the office to see what had failed, and restart it before deadline. Fibre rolled out here after we retired.

@kolya@social.cologne @wonderofscience@mastodon.social A solar day is from noon till noon. In that time the earth has moved in its orbit. A star-based day (sidereal day) would be from a particular star is due south, until the next time it’s due south. The earth moves along its orbit so the two are slightly different. 4 mins of time difference x 365 days in a solar year works out at about 24 hours as you’d expect. I’m not an astronomer. If anyone has a better explanation please chip in.

@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us Apropos to another thread which I don’t want to hijack, if you’re an art gallery check the pictures don’t have a reflection of the light above if you’re at wheelchair height. I went with an art teacher to see an exhibition of one of her favourite artists’ work and she could only see them if she sat to the side. So thoughtless.

Edited for grammar

@kolya@social.cologne @wonderofscience@mastodon.social when I found there were different day lengths I t took me ages to work out what was going on. I’m glad you got it. The original diagram specifies sidereal day. I liked your remark about speeding up, though. [Edit: slowing down!]

@yirggzmb Yes, for me it’s the process rather than the product. I have more fancy scarves than I could ever wear, but they are all different and were fun to make. And for every one I learned a new technique.

@ChrisMayLA6 The answer is simple. Instead of one light above each picture, place two lights above, one at each side. Hey presto, no reflections. But more cost, more work. Seriously, wheelchair users have enough to contend with, with whatever caused them to need the chair in the first place, without thoughtlessness where there’s an easy fix.

“A system that can't shelter, feed, educate or care for its people is a failure. People in failed states will vote for anyone who promises to tear the system down.” Cory Doctorow.

I read this and immediately thought of how well Reform are doing. They’re against the system (though many of their high heid yins do quite well by it), but they don’t have any plan to replace it. They’re just against.

@cflynnbooks@mastodonapp.uk An English friend was showing me round Amsterdam. “The old church is down that way,” he said. “And a newer one is along here.” “I can see that from the street names,” say I. “I didn’t know you spoke Dutch!” “I don’t, but the street names give it away.” Oudkerksplein and Niewe Kerkstraat were obvious to me, and completely obscure to him.
