Helen Lockhart Ripples Crafts
Chief Dyer at Ripples Crafts Hand Dyed Yarn,
A Scatterling of Africa
Living in Assynt and loving life here.
I'll chat mostly about #weaving #dyeing #knitting #Assynt #Scotland #photographs #art #IndependentLife #OffGridLiving
You will also find me in my other professional guise at @RipplesCrafts@handmade.social where I talk about hand dyeing yarn which I've been doing since 2008.
Westray at her best today
Some beautiful blues in Orkney today
Had a visitor to the dye shed today who went away with a healthy bag full of yarn and looking very happy. Her comment as she was paying was "well, you should see how much my husband has spent on whisky on this trip .....".
I hadn't realised there was a whisky/wool balance to be maintained, but clearly I was wrong.
Re watching the series presented by Prof. Sam Willis on The Silk Road, and was reminded of the lovely quote from a Zoroastrian woman talking about their colourful clothing. She said Zoroastrians don't normally wear black, and that ....
"We wear lively colours to refresh our souls".
I can certainly understand and appreciate that perspective.
Sending @withaveeay@mastodon.scot into the depths of tomb of the eagles on South Ronaldsay
A visit to stones of Stenness today with @withaveeay@mastodon.scot
It has been far far too long, but I dug the loom out today.
Just read a post on a different platform where someone explains that they sold up everything and moved to "the north of Scotland".
Orkney maybe? I mean Shetland would be the obvious "north of Scotland" but I'd give them Orkney. Even north Caithness, so the north of mainland Scotland.
No .... they moved to Skye.
Who wants to tell them there is a whole lot more of Scotland north of Skye? ✋
I didn't watch last night's debate in Scotland, but this picture from today's news feels like a step back in time - not a single female leader. Just men, all in grey suits.
Will be spending a few days with family, and I'm going to be doing some shopping before we get together. Asked if there was anything specific anyone wanted me to pick up and one person replied
"2L gin and dark chocolate"
I'm not sure if that is a sign of things to come or not.
I feel seen ......
An essential part of any visit to Orkney is a visit to Polly Kettle cafe for some wonderful Egyptian treats and excellent coffee.
Good to see Ember Bus Service is introducing an Inverness/Ullapool route.
Need to take proper photos with a real camera rather than just my phone but I'm loving the way this new bouclé base sucks up the colour.
A bit of Bernat Klein inspired weaving is happening
Nothing like a ferry trip on a fine day
This is pretty. Not one I'd wear necessarily but I'd quite like to make one just for the construction of it

A volt and bolt at the Perth chargers before heading to Bridge of Earn for a filling breakfast to see us through the rest of the trip to Edinburgh and then the hard work of setting up for #WoollyGoodGathering
My first ever visitors to the dye shed from Mexico. We're so fortunate with our job to meet so many from all over the world.
2 new yarn bases added to the website today. Both are currently in limited shades but I've added Culag Lace - a BFL/Silk mix with each 100g skein having 800m of yarn, and Kirkaig DK - A pure wool bouclé yarn with each 100g having approximately 220m of yarn.
More colours will be added over the coming weeks.

If you've any sway with the weather gods can you please just have a word with them. We need the NW Highlands dry today. Thank you.
RE: @thisismyglasgow@mastodon.scot
Never change Glasgow, never change
Having been registered on the HMRC website for years and years and dutifully completing tax returns etc, I now need to register for MTD on the HMRC website using my HMRC login. And suddenly HMRC need photo id?! After 36 years of completing tax returns (both the old paper ones and online) suddenly they need to see my face?
Bah! *waves hand around in frustration*
Thank you @barbaratate@mstdn.social 😂😂😂
Lovely to see Dornoch Fibre Fest getting a write up in the Northern Times.

Another day, another situation of battling with the HMRC website on a different task from yesterday.
Following a link on the HMRC website to cancel something on the tax details and it takes me to a page to apply for said tax details. Nothing I do changes it.
*throws up hands in disgust*
The knitting world really does have the ability to just spontaneously combust from time to time doesn't it?
I do know someone who, despite using the NCP app, and despite seeing the time they're parked in the car park ramp up during their stay, and despite NCP having their correct credit card details and car reg number, NEVER actually got charged the fee. So I can't say I'm surprised to see this
I know it divides opinion so not looking for the "don't use Ravelry" comments, but is anyone else having trouble accessing Ravelry?
Anyone able to help Tamsin?
