it is an encrypted, private, decentralized, multi-platform #chat app, with good multi-device and multi-profile support
with it you don't depend on a single server, all your data, chats and contacts live in your pocket, e2e encrypted, without depending on a particular server, you can easily migrate from server to server without losing any chat or groups!
it also has #offlineFirst in-chat mini-games and tools!

@evacide@hachyderm.io signal is centralized and depends on phone numbers, there is a lot of room for the gov to mess around just with amazon's collaboration, not even signal's, better to go with something like Delta Chat, which has received security audits

that are very old news, Delta Chat used to be like that in the past, encryption is not opportunistic anymore, instead it is perpetual, if a chat is encrypted it is encrypted forever and the key of that contact can never be manipulated/replaced by servers, the key is your identity
about email, that is an extra option, you can read your inbox as chat in Delta Chat

@d2weber@mastodon.green this sounds horrible, can't you just tell QT that the text should be interpreted as raw text and not as markup??? (avoid completely using "rich text" that accepts html on user input) just using a regex to fix a problem with img sounds like a small patch on a huge hole

I really like your spirit but notice that for this also the servers need to be under our complete control, reality is that we depend a lot in #VPS providers sort of the landlords of the internet and is becoming harder and harder to really own your server and escape the home-renting slavery once again in the virtual world, these "landlords" have access and can see all data in your server

@gustavo also came here to comment that, the problem I see is that it is hard to recommend random instances that will disappear overnight, but at least offering a random trusted instance that have been running for years would be nice
I think the actual problem here is the strong dependency in a single instance, mastodon should move in a direction where you can have multi-homing and not have your profile depend on single point of failure

@rakoo@blah.rako.space #chatmail right now depends a lot in #DNS and port 25, things might change in the future to lower the barrier of selfhosting it, I really hope for a day when setting a chatmail server in your home or a local mesh is a trivial painless matter

@collectifission@greennuclear.online I think you (or perhaps me?) are misunderstanding, when I was talking about "digital independence" I was not talking on an individual level but on a national level, as I understood from your post the day was a German gov iniciative, as such if a gov is relaying on a central service of other country that is the exact opposite of digital independence

@res260@infosec.exchange yeah it is not solely about decentralization but being able to have your own server to be independent is one of the "things" you need nonetheless,
same as not eating meat is just "one of the things" of veganism, and you can NOT skip that one and just say "it doesn't drink milk or honey, good enough" ;)

@res260@infosec.exchange buddy, if you (and by you I mean goverment/countries) don't have control over the server there is zero independence, yes it is an expectrum but you are in the near zero zone, that it could be even worse by using Facebook messenger and you feel content by that is sad and just hints at how bad is your "independence" at this point
