An anti-ICE app that installs from a web page and can't be removed from any app store because it's not on an app store.

Now with EFF legal support, a warrant canary, a backup domain in Iceland, and more!

Sitting on the second floor deck on a warm evening.

The doorway to the house has a magnetic screen on the door - like curtains, but the center edges clip themselves together after you pass through.

Most of the cats figured this out in, oh, five or ten minutes, and walk in and out just fine, the screen opens as they pass, and closes behind them.

One fine boi had no trouble going _inside_ - but found that the combination of screen, sunlight, and shadow seen when headed _out_ posed an incomprehensible, mystic barrier that required a run down the hallway and a _LEAP_ to pass through the screening.

The result, to those of us sitting outside, was the sound of little cat feet frantically racing up the hall, then a tuxedo cat flying out of the doorway at chest height like a small, furry Superman-Penguin hybrid.

This went on for two consecutive years, then at some point he must have noticed that the other cats were just walking through, and thought "Huh, I wonder if _that_ would work?"

Much less entertaining now, but a fond memory.

@StaceyCornelius Damala Harris, the Mice President of Manayunk, has a stuffed mouse. She will carry said mouse about the house and often sit it down on the floor and give it a stern talking to - if and only if no humans are in evidence. If you're noticed, she will immediately disavow all knowledge of said mouse, walk away, have a kibble nibble, take a nap. Once you're gone (or well enough hidden) she'll go back to fetch the mouse, take it somewhere else, and chatter away loudly. Totes adorbs.

@Danpiker@mathstodon.xyz Have a look at: https://gamesx.com/misctech/visual.htm Your eyes have much lower resolution in blue light than in red or green, the article demonstrates that increasing the size of the blue pixels by 9 times (3x3) makes an almost imperceptible change in the image. Link rot has taken the extra images and a diagram showing a proposed pixel layout of a big blue diamond surrounded by small red and green squares.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca This is so, so needed. Was called to a customer site - 3 hour drive away - because a controls engineer couldn't get a communications module working in an industrial controller. When I got there, he told me the communications wasn't showing any failure errors, but the numbers that came through were garbled - the only value that displayed properly was zero. I looked at what we was doing for about ten milliseconds, them told him he was reading in a float and interpreting it as an integer. "What's an integer?" was the reply. I proceeded to learn that this "controls engineer" did not understand the concept of a bit, byte, int, unsigned, long, float, or double - although he did realize there was a difference between the counting numbers and the real numbers. It. Was. A. Long. Day.

@Canageek I'm big on MX Linux. It's Systemd free by default, but you can add it if you so choose. It uses xfce as its desktop so it works well on older machines (there's also a KDE version) and it's got a very mature and comprehensive set of administration tools, letting you go so far as to make custom portable boot media based on a system you've configured. It routinely wins various best this and that Linux contests, is well tempered enough that you can stick a newbie in front of it and they'll be fine, and mostly nobody has heard of it. It's a joint effort of the Mepis and Antix projects, I've used it as a daily driver for 8 years or so, nothing but good things to say about the distro and its community.

@groxx@hachyderm.io @eliocamp@mastodon.social @Danpiker@mathstodon.xyz Makes sense, there are a number of monochrome photosensors designed to work near the center of the green visual peak as well. What I found interesting was not just being able to decrease the number of bits of blue intensity for each pixel, but making the pixel count so much less for blue. We've reached a point in tech where speaking about "efficiency" marks you as being from a bygone age - but this seems like it could be a neat way to pack more images into fewer bytes.

@Lizette603_23 You can start any search by going to https://udm14.org and typing in your search info to the box on that page, which will add the command to your search and redirect it to Google. You can make that your browser home page, so it's always ready on a new tab. Some browsers have an extension available to add a "udm14" search engine to the list, you just install that extension and select udm14 as the default search engine.

@wil@beige.party @coolandnormal@aus.social @globalmuseum@mastodon.online They look like bones - whale ribs or something similar. The smallest is maybe a foot long, the longest about six feet. I saw this performed at a show called "Vegas Nocturne" many years ago, in a restaurant called "Rose, Rabbit, Lie". Picture a restaurant with a small stage area set up in the middle of the seating, and a hundred patrons all holding their breaths, awestruck.

And, of course, there's the trick of adding &udm=14 to a search to get Google not to use AI - there are browser extensions and web pages that add the code for you, removing the nonsense AI result at the top of the Google page.

Somewhat related: For the last 20 years I've been boring everyone around me to tears by explaining that the people "forecasting" the renewable energy transition were blatantly ignoring that it is a logarithmic curve - they would draw what was at first _likely_ the start of a log curve, in later years what was _clearly_ a log curve, then draw a flat line from there off to the right as the "future projection". This has continued for two decades, in multiple fields - this article shows the malfeasance for PV adoption, it's the same across the board. https://pv-magazine-usa.com/2020/07/12/has-the-international-energy-agency-finally-improved-at-forecasting-solar-growth/ If I was so consistently wrong about something that _is my job_, I would be unemployed and unemployable. These yahoos have been telling the legacy energy community and all our policy makers what the oil companies want to believe for decades, with the results we all are seeing. Next is electric cars - internal combustion car sales have peaked already. Not in 2026, not in 2025 - in 2017! https://www.icis.com/chemicals-and-the-economy/2024/09/gasoline-diesel-auto-sales-have-moved-into-long-term-decline/ Of course, major auto makers with an incalculable stranded asset of ICE vehicle R&D and manufacture just don't want to hear it or know, so they abandon EV development pretending they'll sell more gas cars next year, just have to come up with the right fender shape or grille design. Meanwhile most everybody who has ever bought an EV can't think of a situation that would make them buy an ICE car again. I wonder how much of the anti-EV trolling is funded by Big Oil and Russia?

@Nazani@universeodon.com The solar arrays which pivot to track the sun can be set vertical to minimize damage during hailstorms (and snow storms, to minimize accumulation.) Maybe we'll start seeing anti-hailstone netting mounted over stationary arrays in high-hail areas. I suspect a blade that's as wide as a semi truck and as long as an American football field is not going to much mind even extra large hailstones, but it's certainly going to have to be factored into the designers' calculations.
