Got rejected from donating blood. Not for something dignified like to much sex, no. I got rejected because my breath issues don't have an official diagnosis so they can't be sure donating won't hurt me. *headdesk* I donated six months ago when we thought it was asthma and I was fine!

Sometimes things blow my mind. First there is an HIV preventative drugs so effective THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO DO MATH to compare it to the control group (No one in the test group got HIV in the first trial. I have never before or since heard of a drug trial that effective. I believe they got something like 98% effective in the follow-up, much larger trial. NOW there is a human trial of an HIV *vaccine* that shows a lot of promise on primate trials.

@jrootham@mastodon.acm.org @PavelASamsonov@mastodon.social So it depends on how much you have and it's really non-intuitive how long it will linger. So all of your really short stuff like I131 will go away quickly, but even something with a relatively short half-life like Cs137 could be dangerous for centuries if you have enough of it. Now couple this with history is a lot shorter than most people think: 10 half lives of cesium-137 ago and the US hasn't been founded yet

@jrootham@mastodon.acm.org @PavelASamsonov@mastodon.social So you have stuff that is spicy enough to cause a lot of problems, they could very easily still be heinously dangerous 100 years after a societal collapse. Plus in previous technological regressions, it's been very uneven. You actually had a lot of metal working and agricultural advances during the collapse of the Roman Empire, but large-scale understanding of construction techniques was lost.

For those that don't know: There are edit out of control wildfires in the same lake I live near, one at the north end near Vernon, the other about 26 km from be (far side of the lake, thankfully), and a third they have contained.

20,000 people evacuated last night alone

Edit: Three out of control wildfires, I forgot one

@jrootham@mastodon.acm.org @PavelASamsonov@mastodon.social but honestly, I'm much less worried about people digging up deep underground waste dumps, we haven't even built any of those. We do however, have a hill in the Ottawa Valley with an entire nuclear reactor Corps buried under it, that puts off enough radiation that you can't stand on top of the hill and they can't even figure out what's down there because they have radiation coming off of it destroys any electronics put on top of the hill...

What is the best place to all Linux questions these days? Is Linuxquestions.org still good? I'm reaching the point where my bugs are getting weird enough that I'm not really getting answers on Mastodon, would love to know what the best place to ask is #linux

It's a lot of years ago now, but I don't think I actually got any formal education on radiation physics until university. It also doesn't need to be totally lost, just removed enough from the general population that someone decides to explore in that spot. Also, I don't think it takes any special technology to dig a really deep hole- The technology's in speed and safety

Note to self, never fly with Flair again: They no longer have human support staff and when you call you just get a chatbot that is unable to connect you to a human.

They also do not have X gender markers on their website, so I'm having to put in a support ticket to update my husband's booking as both Canada and the US offer X IDs and he has one

MotherFUCK, we've been having an issue with a bunch of boxes of crab shells rotting from a mixture of moisture and heat. The smell was entering the building and making the whole way incredibly unpleasant to be in, so I told the group they need to get those dried out and put into watertight containers. #RealTimeChem

I've seen people having names or what not running along limbs or in places that would be a pain to photoshop out, but I haven't actually seen names or symbols or initials worked into the artwork itself Like the old TSR guys would. They would make their initials into runes on a wall, or incorporated into the texture of things or stuff like that

@datum I've been very skeptical of that last one, just based on my experiences as an inorganic crystallographer. I do want to talk with some colleagues this summer at the international union of crystallography meeting about what the smallest thing that can count as a crystal is that would still be able to act as a seed.

@mirabilos@toot.mirbsd.org @xgranade@wandering.shop see I don't want people making money in certain spaces at all. if possible, I would like it if there was enough open source ttrpgs to completely push companies out of the space, instead of what we're seeing is that it adds easier and easier to publish things for money. Instead of writing an adventure for a home group, thinking it's pretty good, and putting it up on a forum for free for others to enjoy, everyone puts it up on DTRPG to make a quick buck.

@eldersea@expressional.social @cocaine_owlbear@retro.pizza Mint cannot KDE, at least not without doing a lot of work yourself. That is why I stopped using Mint. I then stopped using Fedora when they started accepting AI contributions, and they recently announced they're creating an entire AI focused spin. Which is sad, I liked it more then OpenSUSE for reasons I can't put my finger on.

@eldersea@expressional.social @cocaine_owlbear@retro.pizza I've used mint (Debian based), Fedora and OpenSUSE In the last last year, and I haven't noticed any real differences between them for gaming, so I'm kind of assuming any relatively modern distros going to be practically identical for that use If you're doing the Gentoo thing where all of your packages are optimized specifically for your exact architecture, it's probably going to be a bit better at performance? But as I understand it, not many people do that these days

I don't know if this was the thing in the US, or just MostExpensiveCellPlansada

It looks so perfect, and then you try and use it and buttons keep getting placed offscreen, bars suddenly take up half the screen, and scrolling lists has visible framerate issues :(

Watched a dubbed copy of Captain Harlock YouTube recommended to me today. Wow, that does not hold up. I've heard better acting in local theater.

Is it magically better with subs? Is this why there was such disdain for dubs when I started watching?
