@jamesthomson This is why I have used a lot of private browsing to read articles on completely legit sites. I simply click on Accept all, read what I need and close it, hoping the browser won’t leave any trail behind on my device. The only downside is that the tracking will be 100 % enabled on their side, in the logs and maybe some database or they will sell my data to third-parties. So … no, it’s not ideal. I just find it practical if I absolutely want to visit the website.

@morrick@appdot.net I have had the same cell carrier since 2004. They had amazing deals during their startup-rebel era (an actual cell carrier — not MVNO pseudo carrier). Eventually they stabilized and the investors wanted profits after several years of customer acquisitions from the established competitors. They lost the underdog feeling I loved. However, I still *like* (not celebrating) them and they did eventually give me a special-deal cell-service contract. Super cheap.

@ahltorp @Chancerubbage @gadgetgav @jacob Yes exactly. This kept being a thing for both the original iPhone, iPhone 3G and the early iPod Touch models (1st gen and 2nd gen). I still have the iPhone 3G and 2nd-gen iPod Touch and they both can’t run iOS versions newer than iOS 4.2.1. Neither handles real multitasking: force-quit with UserDefaults save and restore code is a must. Done properly, the user will *think* it’s multitasking.

@unknownuniverse @thelinuxEXP It makes sense. It’s one of very few downsides of having an open-source kernel. Maybe even the only real downside. Well, ultimately it’s up to those big commercial entities to change their minds.

@tylercheung@mastodon.social @Migueldeicaza@mastodon.social I don’t use gaming PCs and feel kinda lost in the gaming GPU world of things. I only know about the budget vs mid-range vs premium setup, from my ownership of GeForce 2 GTS way back in the yesteryears of using a PC with Linux for many years. The only non-retro PC I have at home these days is my WFH laptop, aka my employer’s HP Elitebook with Windows 11 Pro. That one is ”beefy for M365”, but not much else.

@morrick I think his strategy is “keep your friends close, but your enemies closer”. In terms of ethics and the image of Apple, it’s backfired considerably. It’s terrible! But, regardless, I think that’s the strategy he’s using.

Commodore 64 Web Server Brings 8-Bit Into The Future

These days, most webservers are big hefty rackmount rigs with roaring fans in giant datacenters. [naDDan]’s webserver is altogether more humble, as it runs on a single Commodore 64.  The C64 …

@_inside Two weeks ago, I went into the $HOME folder’s Library/ and deleted old simulator runtimes worth 200 GB (two hundred gigabytes) of data, totalling more than 3,5 million files. Here is one of the Empty Bin dialogs I managed to capture. EDIT: There was more than just runtimes: cache and just leftovers all the way back to Big Sur, as its the M1 Mac Mini. I cleaned up 1/5 of internal storage (1 TB flash).

I learned a lot from hearing your thoughts on Swift dev and you guys brought me a deeper insight into what it’s like creating apps professionally (I’ve been a hobby Swift dev since 2016, rookie-grade Obj-C hobby dev since Xcode 3.x). The tone of the podcast always felt humble, nice and enthusiastic, so I always enjoyed listening to the conversations. Looking forward to tuning in again soon!

@unknownuniverse @thelinuxEXP I have used Linux since 1998. Gaming never took off until Proton came along, so there is no other way to solve this. The sheer amount of gamers means that hardware manufacturers and exhibits will all start focusing on Linux gaming. Microsoft technologies will transition to being an Enterprise-only OS. But, does it need 70, 80, 90 % market share before Linux-native games become first-class choices? I don’t know. Sales profits will decide.

@morrick There are alternatives: to write once and still look great on multiple platforms, natively compiled and the UI adapts to each platform. Looks, responds and behaves properly. I just fail to see why big corporations like Adobe become so lazy all of a sudden with the UI development. I don’t think the users (designers) have become so stupid that they get visually lost when switching between Adobe products on Mac vs WinUI. Maybe it locks the user into an Adobe-specific workflow.

@morrick@appdot.net I think the 914 shown in the video thumbnail looks hideous, to be honest. It’s interesting, because not every premium car model looks stunning. This includes me not admiring the design of exactly every Lamborghini ever produced (although I like the vast majority of them!). Note: I wish I could search Mastodon to find my previous replies to you, regarding car discussions. Sorry if I end up repeating myself. UPDATE: Mastodon on the web only found an unrelated Porsche mention.

@natpanferova Getting to understand what SwiftUI expects from the developer is extremely valuable. I think that’s the right approach to take in learning how to make apps. Advice that help developers avoid spending half of their day fixing layout errors or debugging unexpected behavior from something like NavigationSplitView.

@unknownuniverse @thelinuxEXP I’m not a game dev in Unity, nor Unreal engine, but games are usually made in C++ and C#. Just think how many game platforms game devs need to support: PS5, XBOX, Win 11 and sometimes Android + iOS. They can do it because the code compiles on multiple OSes without rewriting the whole game. Native Linux support isn’t rocket science, but their boardroom investors demand market share. I’m confident your F1 one day will be on Linux natively.

@unknownuniverse @thelinuxEXP Doesn’t matter that it’s Proton, because it drives market share. Once you hit 30, 40, 50, 60 … maybe even 70 % market share in the future, no one will bother with Proton. Most people are using Linux for gaming at that point, so they better make native games to satisfy the *main* audience.

@morrick@appdot.net For most of my life I have had a special eye for Porsche and Lamborghini, since getting posters I put up in my room as a little kid, starting in roughly 1990 or thereabouts. One of the posters depicted a Porsche 911 and the other being the Lamborghini Countach. Both were red. I think Boxsters are pretty cool as well. Maybe I’ve told you already: there’s a game I had for my PlayStation (1st gen), Porsche Challenge, which is where I discovered that the Boxster model existed.

@AshtonDev @CodingItWrong @marcoarment I don’t mind paying for major OS upgrades if they go back to a proper macOS-centric UI and fix any usability issues and do other big improvements. But, if it became a subscription it would be really dangerous: I would never subscribe to an OS.
