I'm all in favor of giving users full control over what an app can and can't do on their system, but doing it without providing the app developer at least a way to communicate to the user that the app needs them to enable something in System Settings results in a bad user experience.

It looks like the CloudKit silent notification bug was caused by some sort of token validation added in iOS 26.4 that was dropping notifications from CloudKit. Fixed in iOS 26.4.1 by bypassing the validation for notifications that come from CloudKit

If you have a Mac app that displays its own icon somewhere in the UI, it can end up showing the incorrect icon if the user's icon style changes while the app is running. Here's a SwiftUI view that can handle that and always display the icon that matches the current system style: https://gist.github.com/insidegui/686ae55087542b430be976918418d129

Fun fact: the "EnablePasteboardPrivacyDeveloperPreview" defaults flag on macOS doesn't just enable confirmation for accessing the clipboard, it moves the responsibility for an app's main menu from the app's own process into a separate system process (TrustedUIService). This means that the contents of the menus have to be serialized to be sent over XPC to that system process, breaking things such as custom SF Symbols in menu icons. I guess that's part of why it's still just a developer preview.

TIL about this "CustomAvailability" experimental feature in Swift. Looks like Apple is using it for feature flags 👀

It’s 2026 and there are still apps on iOS that ask for full Photo library access just to save something to the library or upload a single picture 🤦‍♂️

Is it me or has the dark pattern of including “Action required!”, “Urgent!”, “Important!” and similar in marketing messaging from companies increased since the introduction of LLM-based notification prioritization in smartphones? 🤔

PS: This doesn’t really affect my notifications because I have those turned off for pretty much everything, but I still see the subject line or message eventually 😒

@lucasfigueiredo@mastodon.social it’s way too complicated to explain properly in a short post here, but the TL;DR is it’s used for alternative app marketplaces and yes it does catch that stuff but it’s all configurable remotely by Apple so exactly what it does can’t be 100% determined

iOS developers: there's one more place to clean up if you're running Xcode 16: "/System/Library/AssetsV2/com_apple_MobileAsset_iOSSimulatorRuntime”
Although it's in /System, it's actually a separate mount point so it is read/write. You can delete older runtime folders in there that you're no longer using. This saved ~30GB on my Mac

@noheger@wien.rocks Yes! All the time. The opposite also occurs: trying to click something behind a window and accidentally resizing the front most window instead.

Replying to
@mrdaveanderson@infosec.exchange That's a completely different scenario: the OS is allowing an explicit permission prompt because the permission is not migrated between devices. Nothing to do with the scenario I'm complaining about here.

Replying to
@mrdaveanderson@infosec.exchange that’s just a poorly implemented app then, which is often the case with apps for such devices. In my specific example, I’m only warning the user when they explicitly attempt an action that’s prevented by the permission being off. Ideally, users will punish bad-behaved apps with negative reviews and uninstalls.
