Hiiii! After unexpectedly finding myself without a job for the first time in my professional career, I am looking for a new role effective immediately - one where I can do good, period. 🌟 PREFERRED ROLES (non-exhaustive!): ▪️Writer: technical, reports, newsletters, deep dives, articles ▪️Teacher/tutor: #German, #linguistics, language study; data analytics & literacy, #statistics ▪️Coach: #academia to what’s beyond; personal development; organization; task & project management; app setups & ecosystems ▪️Data analyst / data scientist ▪️Researcher / policy #analyst 🏢 PREFERRED INDUSTRIES & AREAS: ▪️Non-profit/not-for-profit & #advocacy. Broadly speaking: more just, sustainable, more good ▪️Tutoring, coaching, education (software, tools, instruction), academia ▪️Civic good, municipal affairs, local journalism, urbanism, environment/ecology ▪️Small tech/tech for good, FOSS/FLOSS, privacy, digital sovereignty ▪️Disaster management/prevention, emergency operations (I have work, volunteer, and/or education/training experience in all of these categories - happy to share more!) 💪🏼 I’LL BE A FANTASTIC FIT IF: ▪️You suspect there’s a story in a heap of #data, but don’t know what it is - or how to coax it out. I’ll find it for ya. ▪️You need great visuals and tailored communication for any audience: clear academic reports, engaging tech newsletters, gentle introductions to complex topics, keynotes - I love ‘em all. ▪️You need someone to dig deep. I naturally follow up on every “huh, that’s odd - let me see what’s really going on there!” ▪️You want a critical thinker who gives honest advice. You’ll get the real deal. ▪️You like saying what you mean and talking to each other like real people. I can speak corporate, but I’d prefer leaving that seven-layer dip of jargon behind! ▪️Bonus: You suspect corporate AI may soon be unaffordable for most organizations, or the bubble may burst, and need someone who can do excellent work without chatbot crutches if needed. ⛔️ NOT LOOKING FOR: ▪️Roles where I’m expected to rubber-stamp work, go through the motions, or “put the data fries in the bag.” ▪️Cultures where manufactured emergencies are the norm and there’s no time to think, explore, or dig deep. ▪️Jobs where you can’t tell me what good I’ll do or where my positive impact will be. 🖥️ PREFERRED SETTING: ▪️Remote, flexible hours ▪️Contracts/project work; very open to a portfolio-style career ▪️Hybrid or “we get together sometimes” roles in the #Edmonton area ▪️I’m not chasing the corporate ladder; impact matters more. If it’s a good fit, I don’t care whether it comes with a “Senior” label. #boostOK, and if you do, I’ll send all the good vibes so there may never again be an unexpected item in your bagging area. 💜 Hiring, or know someone who is? Please get in touch! [Illustration by maarij aulakh on Pixabay] #getFediHired #fediJobs #jobs

Age gating isn't it.

1. it is a thinly-veiled surveillance information grab
2. it's a digital sovereignty issue
3. online communities can be Good, Actually
4. ... it's probably not going to work
5. age gating means dancing around the real issue of holding Big Tech accountable

(also includes tips for how to get in touch with your representatives if you are Canadian and would like to voice your opposition. The time to do that is right now!)

> "What worries me isn’t smart computers—it’s stupid humans, using the crudest energy-sucking generative AI tools to make themselves dumber, debase creativity and undermine the very concept of truth itself.

When I see governments and businesses pushing people to use AI to answer every email, goose every online search or even draft official documents, I can only hope this fever dream will pass, that it will become fashionable again to write and create and think for ourselves."

A fantastic short piece, "AI Fever Dream," by Senator Paula Simons. Thank you @Paulatics@mstdn.ca for your thoughtful writing & advocacy on this runaway hype train that is gen AI.

New blog post!

A discussion of how modern visual-first algorithmic platforms are polar opposites of the predominantly text-based social networks of yore - and not only due to technological advancements, like "powerful computers with fantastic cameras in every pocket."

Sparked by a fantastic podcast episode (Details & links in the article - thank you @afelia@chaos.social )

RE: @stefan@stefanbohacek.online

🤔 This is *not* a good look.

Is Bing actively trying to stifle the #indieWeb & the #smallWeb ? Who knows!

Regardless - what you can do:
- pick a different search engine if you are using Bing. #Qwant and #Startpage (and #DuckDuckGo - see note below) come to mind as great first picks.
- start up your own little #indieWeb #smallWeb site! Share what you like. It doesn't have to be complicated. A small blog, a digital garden.
- seek out #webrings, share content from small/indie sites that you enjoy!

update - see interesting notes from other users re: DuckDuckGo, which claims to at least partially use Bing, but shows NeoCities in results.

There's a lot in this fantastic article by Ky Decker - which is hitting a little close to home right now.

I've worked with data for 8+ years now, I know my way around ML models - and I don't recognize #tech anymore.

---

> A team lead adds an AI chatbot to a Slack channel. Anyone can tag the bot to answer questions about the company’s products. Coworkers tag the chatbot many times a day. You never see someone check that the bot’s responses are correct.

> Documents and code are being generated faster than team members can review. You get the feeling that most people have stopped reading altogether.

> Organization leadership has mandated that each person adopt new AI tools to “uplevel” themselves and their team.

Naja. 🙄

RE: @gedankenstuecke@scholar.social

This is an excellent analysis and write-up on ad bidding and obnoxious web design.

If phrases like "viewport suffocation," "unacceptable interaction cost, " and talk about UX heuristics in the context of why the F we are all made to close four pop-ups and pop-unders before even getting to access a website* excites you: This article is for you!

> "It is working perfectly for the people who built it this way. The question is whether it is working for you."

*This is why I like to say that ad-blockers are no longer optional.

OR. Maybe it's time to regulate Big Tech instead?

Follow-up question - if this was to be implemented, who'd do the actual age verification? Where would this data go & be stored? Because I have a guess, and it's the opposite of digital sovereignty....

Hello good morning ✨ In This Edition:

Age Gating isn't It, Fam

🌞 Good News!:
Open printers and repairable e-readers; the people are pushing back on slop factories and mandatory ID apps; the EU bans their staff from using AI-generated visuals in official comms; disentangling yourself from "Sign in with Google."

But I don't think it has ever been as ubiquitous and accepted as it is now to laugh at and quickly dismiss anyone who enjoys the distance between a question and its answer"

@codemonkeymike Yes!! I have an ASUS Vivobook from when I was in grad school ca. 2016 - would have likely gone to the Eco station if I'd tried to install Win 11 on it. Instead, it is humming along juuuust fine with @pop_os_official on it. I use it to do research and write articles for my blog, plus assorted feed reading, browsing, email, all that good stuff. Even some light Steam gaming. And it looks sleeker than Windows ever did! #Linux #upcycle

@parismarx In my mind this follows the playbook of local compute and storage being bought up by AI/cloud companies, and then charging people for cloud storage and compute plans, because, oh no!, on-prem compute and storage is either not available at all, or prohibitively expensive, for some mysterious reason. It's just now they've found a way to extend this to *human* "compute".
