Using human genetics and genomics with applied bioinformatics to understand human disease. Just enough stats and server to make me dangerous with data. Well-marbled.

Lifetime achievement: Making an SRO tell me I might want to remove a grant review budget comment that a specific institutional charge rate was mob level extortion.

#DIY
#HomeDIY

This is your reminder to flush your water heater if you have the storage tank type, and especially if you have a well or hard water.

I realized it had probably been 2-3 years since I last remembered to do it, so I did it today. There was much sediment. Much much sediment. 😬

#Academia#AcademicChatter Watching an symposia on #AI use in #Genetics and #Genomics. At least one person is using corporate LLMs to power their platform to understand SNP-disease associations. I asked if the corporate model use is ethical or do we need ethical models for research use (I mean I don't want them anyway, but that's another thing). Person's answer sums to: I wouldn't say that LLMs are from intellectual theft. It was scraped from the open web so it's ethical. Oh. Sweet child.

Mother forking #Debian. 🤬🤬🤬 "The winners are: Option 5 "Responsible Use of Generative AI" https://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2026/08/msg00360.html I had hoped this ONE #Linux distro would keep its head.

You know what floats to the top of my thoughts pretty often? Globally, how much better #Bioinformatics, #ComputationalBiology, and #FOSS #OpenSource software would be with universal basic income. So many people would be happy to keep making their products better for the greater good if they didn't have to worry about shelter, food security, and healthcare.

@michcampbell@fediscience.org I've taken to starting an Excel doc and manually setting specific columns to text format so it doesn't interpret as dates. Then copy into it from a tab separated text file. It's silly. But I can't trust it otherwise.

I was checking a faculty candidate what the #HPC is offering on its newest iteration of the cluster (that is fee per CPU second use). The high mem instance? 64 GB of RAM. Which is what my decade+ ancient server.

Within the last two weeks I was running a relatively simple random forest that needed 80+ GB on version 1 of the cluster. Well I guess I'm not doing that after it's decomissioned. Which sent me down the rabbit hole. What would it take for me to build a 256 GB RAM server?

@soller@floss.social I don't have any large, complex projects. Just smaller dataset analyses. That said, I have moved my private repos from BitBucket to self hosted ForgeJo. Painless for me so far. Though I will note that I also am hosting in Docker with nginx out front for one user instead of bare metal. YMMV

Replying to
@jrosell@mastodon.social @michcampbell@fediscience.org it wouldn't solve the problem. Computational people are happy with flat files or databases or whatever. 0% of any of my collaborators would use something other than Excel. Full 0%.

@veronica sigh. It never ends. Stage 1: announce you will help "the community" Stage 2: make an ok project people start to use. Stage 3 (you are here): consolidate hold over entire ecosystem. Stage 4: monetization. Stage 5: Enshittify to increase profit extraction. Stage 6: Abandon project to refocus priorities. 🙄

@latenightlinux@mastodon.social I think tailscale or wireguard are the obvious choices to get back home. But I'm home more than I'm away and don't necessarily want tailscale on all the time. I have my lan pihole resolve the tailscale fun name to a lan IP on the local network. No tailscale traffic needed. When away, I turn on tailscale to get back. It wouldn't work for mobile DNS, but does great for "services" like linkwarden, forgejo, etc without the large file transfer slowness on lan.

#Networking
#HomeNetwork
#Router
#OpenWRT

I am again at the point where I'm not sure if it's worth updating the router. It's *fine*. It runs #DDWRT and is stable.

But traveling, especially now that we have fiber, it would be super handy to have built-in #Wireguard. Then when I travel I could bridge a travel router to the host WiFi and Wireguard back to home.

Anyone know if there are magical times of the year that #GliNet runs sales? The Flint3 would be a good upgrade.
