SO... I was thinking about finally giving up and deleting my LinkedIn profile in the last couple of weeks.

Not that it has ever helped me before, but I am glad I didn't. I need to update it. A lot. I've done up my CV tonight.

Meanwhile... if anyone could use an experienced technical employee based in Wellington (remote work is fine), do let me know.

My short CV - I'm not a programmer, not a database designer, not a data engineer, not an architect, not a technical writer, not a web coder, not an automation expert, not a trainer. But... I have done all of those things many times. If there were a requirement to be any one of those things full time, I have no doubt I could get up to speed quickly.

My primary role in recent years has been technical support, mostly of a platform but also various technical users. I'm pretty good at this, if I say so myself.

I'm also a fabulous communicator in person and in writing. Not my judgement; people tell me that. Have done for years. (Ask me about that time I had dropped on me the need to train 100+ developers and testers in new tooling and I had to develop and deliver a complete training course in a few weeks.)

There's a small chance I will still have a job in 6 weeks but, the way things look now, I do not want it. What is being proposed is unreasonable and any residual loyalty to the company I have given 15 years has just evaporated. Actually, it is not at all the same company I joined back then. It is a shell of its former self and a lot of us have no confidence in the leadership.

The EMAS is all installed and last night the runway was re-marked for increased length. Airways Corporation have been calibrating a new ILS, too.

Pic 1 - Airways Corp Piper Cheyenne conducting a calibration approach. The southern EMAS is visible right below it (the blue-grey material).

Pic 2 - A couple of execs have a photo op at the north end of the runway. You can see a blacked out marking. The northern EMAS will be in the picture behind the exec.

Interestingly, listening to the radio, all of the approaches were RNP ones, which makes sense if the ILS is not yet ready. It was a little weird to hear "established" calls when the aircraft was not yet aligned with the runway!

And, indeed, here is one of those execs... https://www.wellingtonairport.co.nz/news/airport-updates/wellington-airport-completes-major-runway-upgrade/

@nwbt@social.nearerandfarther.com @miramarmike@cloudisland.nz honestly, Mastodon is entirely defined by who you choose to follow. I'm a 40-year tech nerd and I see very little Linux talk. Because I'm not here for the tech, for the most part.

@nzdjb@cloudisland.nz if it's critical I be understood, and time is of the essence, then I would use clearer language. But... Most Americans in such a setting would never hesitate to use their own idioms without even thinking about it. So my preference IS to use local idiom. I will talk in kilograms, degrees Celsius, and more besides, and I will NOT translate unless asked. The key reason I have decided to do this is the whole (English speaking) world is slowly Americanising. Tonight I was watching The Chase — that most British of TV shows — and the host — Bradley Walsh, who is no spring chicken — clearly said "airplane". See also Aucklanders never stipulating things being location-specific to Auckland. I don't see why I should be assimilated and lose my culture.

RE: @codemonkeymike@fosstodon.org

It's not a T2 problem, it's an information problem.

You also can't use a car someone sells you if they don't give you a key. Oh, but you used to be able to hot-wire cars. Yes... and why can't you now? Same reason.

I speak as someone who has sold... thinks... 2 iPads, 6 iPhones, and 7 Macs (some very recently) to new owners who all have them now locked to their own accounts.

Bitching about them lowering theft (it worked exceptionally well for iPhones) isn't sensible. Bitch about them not educating users.

Oh... except most users don't want educating. 🤷🏻‍♂️

A small reminder that "a11y" is the most antithetical (and heterological) "word" ever invented.

I saw another, similarly formed "word" today and I felt a pathological sense of not wanting to know what it stood for.

@opencage not of international significance, but of huge national significance is Cook Strait which creates possibly the most expensive ~30km journey within national borders. Add to that its reputation as one of the roughest stretches of water in the world and that it has multiple fault lines running beneath it.

Hmmmm. So Mainfreight are disappointed that KiwiRail don't want to talk to them. Why is it that Mainfreight are only NOW talking to KiwiRail about moving freight efficiently?

Trains have ALWAYS been more efficient than trucks. Yet between government sell-offs and under-investment in rail and the simultaneous road-centric spend-ups, we should be thankful that KiwiRail is still in business!

I clearly remember conversations in the 1980s that more needed to be done to utilise rail.

Heck, even this headline is favouring the trucks. Mayor Brown's comment was in response to Mainfreight begging to use bus lanes to save fuel!

Hey Kiwis. I was thinking of replacing two MR16 spots in ceiling mounts with some Philips Hue ones. Looking on the Hue site it talks about compatible transformers.

Looking at the bulbs I have in there now, I have previously unthinkingly replaced the originals with standard LED ones at some point.

Philips have a chart which shows transformer compatibility but I can't even understand how to read the chart let alone know where that transformer actually is (if I have one) to read any info off it.

The current bulb has "6W MR16 3000K DC12V Non-Dimmable" printed on it.

The Hue (model 8719514491465) specs are a little messy on the site, but appear to be 5.1 (presumably Watts), and "Input voltage: 12V AC electronic".

I don't know what I believe because surely AC versus DC is a big difference, but I'm not sure they refer to the same specification. The power supply of the house is AC, right? My electrical knowledge is too basic to second guess anything.

Link to their transformer sheet below. Any Kiwis with requisite electrical knowledge know if they're compatible in my situation? Or anything I need to check?
