The proposed handling of LLM in Debian in the latest "Bits from the DPL" is a bit concerning. It misses the mark by acknowledging issues with LLM usage, and then dismisses them all by saying that "As a society, we rarely respond with categorical refusal. Instead, we regulate, reflect, and take responsibility for how we use them." and suggesting absolutely no regulation or reflection (and no particular responsibility other than that which comes with any contribution).

I'm not a Debian developer, just a longtime user (and upstream for an unimportant package). But if Debian isn't the principled, ethical one, then I'm guessing no one will be.

@ehashman I agree that it probably won't be possible to avoid software tainted by LLMs. But Debian can't only be about technical issues. Even this exact post provides plenty of examples that Debian *isn't* just about technical issues. Debian is also about community, and about ethics and freedom. At this point, much of LLM-critique is about ethics. It's about how workers that are being abused to train the models. It's about them systematically undermining free software licenses by feeding them into the LLM grinder as fodder for generating code. As he mentions, it's also about the environment. I hold Debian to a higher standard than others. Perhaps that's unfair. But it's also why I choose Debian. Sure, the distro is excellent on technical merits, but the difference from many others is the community and their thoughtful approaches to ethics and real-world issues. Debian can't dictate what others do. But Debian can lead by example, and make principled stances. I've sort of come to expect that from them. That said, I'm not one to dictate what Debian does. I don't get a vote when it comes to that. But it makes me sad, and I feel a bit hopeless, when even Debian doesn't take a principled stance.

One of my grandparents use a laptop with #Debian and #Mate. Just had to do a remote login to help fill out a form. Laptop has an uptime of 461 days. Granted a lot of that is while suspended. But it just works, and keeps just working.

View your #Steam wishlist like you view the discovery queue.

My #Steam wishlist has gotten out of hand, and so I wanted a quick way to look through it. I find the (old) discovery queue that Steam has to be a decent interface to flipping through games. So I made a user script that implements the same interface for your wishlist: https://snippets.zerodogg.org/n/browser/steam-wishlist-queue/

@ehashman @foolishowl To begin with your last point, the goal. It is, in my mind, for Debian to take a principled stance, and base that on its existing values and ethics. It's not up to Debian if LLM's continue to see use in society at large, just as it's not up to Debian if people keep using non-free alternatives. But Debian can make a difference, and I'd argue that Debian does so every day. Debian *is* different from many other distributions. One only needs to look at the social contract to see that, and Debian goes to great lengths to uphold it. Debian is important partly because it puts its values first. As for my objections, at this point it's hard to differentiate between the technology of LLMs and the harms that stem from the usage of them, mostly because those making said technology encourage harmful usage. Workers rights, a complete disrespect and active undermining of free software licenses, contributions to completely destroying the web by flooding it with nonsense and the environmental impact of training, are among my objections. I would say it's near impossible to use one in any kind of ethical way at this stage. If Debian accepts contributions made with LLMs, then I would argue Debian is contributing to the negative effects I list above, partly by legitimizing them. That said, If a model that respects licenses of the works it uses, a high bar it seems, has all of its training data, weights and other software licensed under a free software license, and is trained without significant environmental impact and without abuse of workers - then yes, that might be something that I could see be acceptable for contributions to Debian. I'll also accept that there might still be LLM contributions being made, but without disclosure. But that doesn't erase the impact of taking a principled stance. I don't need Debian to change the world on its own. But I don't prefer Debian on technical grounds alone, just like I don't write free software just because I need a particular piece of software myself.

I'm looking for some help making a #flatpak for Migraine Log (https://migrainelog.zerodogg.org) so that I can get it on @flathub@floss.social. I've had a Linux port of the app for almost a year, but I just can't find the time to decipher how to write a flatpak from scratch for it (and doing so would take time away from actually developing it in any case, since judging from the docs its nontrivial). Ping me if this sounds like something you can help with.

@Andres4NY And that does give me some hope. Debian has a strong track record of doing the right thing. But the way it was presented by the elected leader was discouraging, and it does matter what the leadership says.

@alda @yatil Does that apply to ‘hidden’ descriptions (that don’t 1:1 match visuals) as well? I make an app, iOS/Android/Linux. In it some data is in a table, which makes sense when seen, but that was awkward when using a screen reader, so I excluded the table from the accessobility tree, and added lines of description, one per row, instead, that added the context of the column headers. So instead of it reading (header) «Medication» «Taken» (content row 1) «Imigran» «16:03» (row 2) «Cataflam» «16:03», it instead skips the header row, and resds «Imigran taken at 16:03» and «Cataflam taken at 16:03» etc.

@yatil @alda Nod. It’s a FOSS app, so I’m mostly basing it on what felt natural, though I might have stepped in the «non-user of screenreaders» trap you mentioned. That table felt off to me, so I labelled it instead.

The bug itself was an assumption that the library I use to trigger a "share" dialog for a file that was invalid in iOS 26, causing it to take a different code path that depended on some optional parameters being set, and thus threw an exception. The upstream lib did have a fix available, but only in a version that also had unrelated API breaking changes. Luckily, though, it was easy to work around it in app code by providing that extra parameter (since updating to a lib version that breaks the API I use would have required a lot more changes and thus a lot more testing, and this was time sensitive).

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social Would be interested in your take on the Telia Norway breach. Happened in november, but we only learned about it in february. Personal data (incl. passports), phone logs etc. Today it was reported that data from the Norwegian Police and The Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection has information in the leak. It's quite the dumpster fire, really, but not that well known outside Norway (or so it seems).

@yatil @FeralRobots @alda Nod, to the screen reader it is essentially an unordered list, navigated one line at a time. But visually it's a two column table. There's no need to compare, really, it's just a display for user data.

Is there any way to submit jobs to #forgejo actions programmatically?
I have my own runners that I use on #codeberg, it would be neat if I could have CI jobs triggered by my private (self-hosted) repos, without needing to run a full foregjo (or similar) for them.

Also accepting tips for alternative low-effort CI-ish things for self-hosted git repos.

Released Migraine Log 0.16.0 this weekend with a bunch of small usability improvements.

- It now counts how long ago you took a medication, so that you can figure out if you can take the next one without doing any math (which can be tricky during a headache).
- You can edit today's entry directly from the app home screen, to avoid some button presses, and avoid accidentally creating a new entry instead.
- It now lets you choose to avoid any headache/migraine-related terminology, enabling the app to be used as a generic pain log.
- Expanded the in-app help.

It also updates Flutter to 3.41 (which, among other things, makes the app support 16KB page sizes on Android).

@trafotin@vt.social @TheEvilSkeleton@social.treehouse.systems and just alias the things in the path so that “application” runs “com.example.Application” for anything you need to run from the cli. If you live in the terminal chances are you’ve accumulated plenty of aliases already (I’ve probably forgotten about half of mine). You can even easily set it so that the aliases are not set up if the app is installed outside flatpak, I did 🤷‍♂️.

@mfenniak@yyc.bike Thanks! I was thinking that access to checkout could be solved with a ssh key. Having a dummy repo on Codeberg does feel kind of like abusing the system though. The thing is that I don't really need any of the functionality Forgejo , other than CI. Everything that needs Forgejo is on Codeberg. The remainder is pretty much only a few private websites that there's no value in hosting publicly. I could write my own thing for it, I doubt it'd be very hard, I need almost nothing, but to me this sounds like something that should already be solved by someone else. But maybe most just use centralised forges with private repos.
