@aral@mastodon.ar.al The time has come for the US institutions to put this madman down. About condemnations and sanctions: the international rule of law is gone. It was already imperfect and compromised but now it is gone. We can close the UN tomorrow.

@FransVeldman@fediverse.thefloatinglab.world I agree that open standards, OSes and programs should be preferred but the data reside on servers and no normal person with no technical knowledge wants to run his/her own server. So you have to choose in which region and under which laws your data will be processed. In this regard at the moment, the EU laws are better than the US for EU citizens. Also, open standards doesn't mean the specific service, server or instance is not evil. And in these times Europeans are not very keen to send money to businesses to a nation that is more and more considered hostile, if they can chose. @randahl@mastodon.social

@Vivaldi Great feature, activated! Just one thing: if I hide the status bar and activate the UI auto-hide, the status bar will appear at the bottom. And when UI auto-hide is deactivated, the status bar is always present.

@Gargron@mastodon.social On Windows 10/11 on different PCs and CPUs, I can't see any difference in daily use between Firefox and Vivaldi. Maybe Edge is a little snappier but nothing dramatic. As already noted you can disable the hibernation feature in the settings.

@neatchee@urusai.social @elessar@social1.ortolo.eu @rustyshelf@mastodon.social I'm not sure it works like that otherwise a Chinese company should respect only Chinese laws even if it does business in the US. That's why corporations have an European headquarters and when they break EU laws the EU branch is fined. What to so Business the in EU? Comply with EU laws.

@neatchee@urusai.social @elessar@social1.ortolo.eu @rustyshelf@mastodon.social I agree with the Apple - Foxconn reasoning. When you say "our legal system" I suppose you mean US system: do you know if in the EU is different? Because the EU Commission should have the people as best interest and so the law should benefit the consumers and corporations have to agree that law whatever the mission to maximize profits is.

@neatchee@urusai.social @elessar@social1.ortolo.eu @rustyshelf@mastodon.social Of course it's harder to bargain with a dictatorship and Apple is bragging more with the EU, but they could choose to exit that market and be fair with the EU. Again, they made their choices.

@elessar@social1.ortolo.eu @neatchee@urusai.social @rustyshelf@mastodon.social Exactly. And of course both worst case scenarios (EU legislating, Apple pulling out of EU) won't happen because both parties are actively negotiating behind the scenes. If Apple is willing to comply to China requests can find a way to comply to EU ones too.

@dillo 1) someone thinks that can solve that with the Gemini protocol. Others think that a "small web" approach is a preferable solution. 2) Probably a mix of both. Ads can be acceptable if they are not intrusive. Surveillance capitalism should be banned. 3) It would be nice to reuse the old hardware for as long as possible. 4) What is a DOIs?

@jon@social.vivaldi.net Thank you for the detailed impressions. I will probably migrate my old PCs too (3rd gen Intel i7) but I will need Windows in emulation or dual boot for a CAD/CAM software. I only need to test LibreOffice with some MS Office files and find another cloud provider for backup files.

Arianna Mingardi, president of the Trieste Coffee Association and owner of the Amigos roasting company, says these costs have been hit by a "perfect storm," due only in part to the weather events that have affected producing countries in recent years. "The instability is primarily due to speculation: large investment funds have found a profitable market in coffee. Prices have become volatile regardless of supply and demand."

@neatchee@urusai.social @elessar@social1.ortolo.eu @rustyshelf@mastodon.social While I agree that manufacture and software are totally different areas the key in the Apple - China agreement was not the field of operation but where the factories were located. Apple wasn't willing to move the production because of costs and then had to give something back to China. It would be better they have a plan to move the production outside China. For the EU case: Apple will make more noise but in the end if a law says more app stores they will have to complain (and make the process a pain for consumers because are vindicative)

@Techaltar@mas.to I think they already aren't reliable. This US administration already put in doubt they will military help Europe if trouble happens. And they want a subaltern EU while it should loose the controls over US tech corporations. EU needs to build up its military and technological power right now.

@jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io I'm not a programmer but for how I understand how LLMs work I could say:

  • if LLMs output bad code it could be because they are trained with most of the code available now, which I'm turn could be bad code.
  • LLMs are an augmentation of the programmer' skills; if the programmer produce bad code because is unskilled the LLM will output bad code faster for him.

Replying to
@elessar@social1.ortolo.eu @neatchee@urusai.social @rustyshelf@mastodon.social I'm not a legal expert but looking at how the companies work around the world I suppose it doesn't work like that. Otherwise all corporations would use slave labor or harmful chemicals or don't give a shit about GDPR or could kill people for the sake of profit. It doesn't mean that all those things don't happen but it's against that law and you will be brought in court if cought. Just an example: for manufacturing of clothes, in third world countries you have usually three factories. The best ones are for EU products because of laws about chemicals, the seconds are for US market where there are little laws about that. And the worst factories are for the domestic market. That's also why similar products cost less on AliExpress, Temu, etc. than on Amazon (other factors applies of course).
