Front camera enablement for Fairphone 5: sent upstream ✅

https://lore.kernel.org/linux-arm-msm/20260313-fp5-s5kjn1-v1-0-fa4f1c727318@fairphone.com/

Vladimir Zapolskiy developed and submitted the actual S5KJN1 driver upstream (for a different device), so just some dts additions were left for me :)

Well, I'm on a camera bringup streak it seems! 🚀

As of tonight the Fairphone 3 cameras (front and rear) are working on postmarketOS with mainline Linux!

And if you saw, only last week I got the Fairphone 4 cameras to work.

A bright future is ahead for mobile Linux! 📸

The last couple of years I've always walked 40 km during Night of the Refugee (Nacht van de vluchteling). This year there is a special 50 km route, due to Stichting Vluchteling existing for 50 years. Definitely a challenge since 40 km is already quite long, but I'm confident I will succeed 😊 I'd really appreciate you donating via the link above to raise funds! #NVDV26

@okias @darkdragon So in short: only Fairphone 3(+) so far, Fairphone 4, 5 and Gen. 6 do not have NFC support in the kernel yet. But there now being an end-user usable way of at least reading NFC tags, there may be some more motivation now (though it's still quite low as there's way more important features that need to be worked on) :)

Replying to
@ati1 @mdhillca @agx There's no audio support at all yet, so no phone calls for sure. See https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Fairphone_(Gen._6)_(fairphone-fp6) for all the info.

@bigsilicon@social.treehouse.systems Front camera = selfie camera The main camera should slowly be unblocked thanks to C-PHY enablement in CAMSS but it's not working yet unfortunately

Replying to
@genofire@social.bremen.social The postmarketOS MR for Fairphone 4 cameras (and actually also charger & fuel gauge) should come within weeks, maybe still this week. Fairphone 3 will take a bit longer, just due to how the development process works there, and I've literally just got it working. Getting everything upstream is a bit more of a challenge, my camera sensor drivers are currently quite hacky, I need to figure out some parameters still to make it proper.

@jfmblinux@mastodon.jfmblinux.fr As written there, Firefox does not support WebUSB, so no. You cannot use Firefox to flash postmarketOS. You can use any other flashing method though, command line, UBports installer and so.

@rmader@mastodon.social I initially picked a IMX363 driver from I believe the sdm845 tree, but it didn't work when I tried it last. Today I dumped the downstream init sequence into my "template" and that worked, not sure if there have been other changes as well. Definitely worth looking into at some point. But I don't have a (clear) route for upstreaming my various sensor drivers yet unfortunately, I still need to figure some things out for that...

Replying to
@Tankred Because Ubuntu Touch doesn't yet support Fairphone (Gen. 6). It's just that you can use the UBports installer to install postmarketOS which is a completely different operating system.

@b3nis Some basic level of usability is there, you can see https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Fairphone_(Gen._6)_(fairphone-fp6) for the list of features that work or not work. Most significantly audio and camera do not work at all yet.

@tufekoi@mastodon.social If I'm not mistaken, there's some extent of A-GPS support but not sure really... And there's plenty of pain points still unfortunately, like calling not working on any of the Fairphones on postmarketOS. But it's getting there, very slowly! Check the postmarketOS wiki pages for each device if you're interested in details.

@dubstar_04@fosstodon.org @postmarketOS@social.treehouse.systems Donating to postmarketOS will surely help bring the ecosystem forward. Currently I don't think that any camera-related paid projects are planned, since there's enough other things that are considered to be more important than getting the camera quality better. But with everything happening in libcamera I'm certain it'll only become better from here :)

Replying to
@badumtss@framapiaf.org Nothing specific really, dump the init sequence plus updated resolution into a 'template' camera sensor driver and hopefully it'll work. I'm still not really sure about multiple things, but hey, it works!

@r3pek@mastodon.r3pek.org Speaker is working on Fairphone 3 (not Fairphone 3+ though) and microphone/headphones are also not working. So, slowly...? I don't expect wonders anytime soon though, I barely spend any time on this device :)

@corvus_ch@social.corvus-ch.name Given it's basically working on Fairphone 4, and the PMIC hardware is similar, it shouldn't be far away on Fairphone 3 either. But first, I want to stabilize that support on Fairphone 4!

@yanndegat@piaille.fr There's active work in all of these areas, but time is limited so it'll take a while until more features are working correctly. Also Fairphone does publish as much source code as possible for all devices, see e.g. https://code.fairphone.com/projects/fairphone-gen-6/odm.html

@yanndegat@piaille.fr For postmarketOS, Fairphone 5 will be definitely the better device for the foreseeable future, lots of work going into it. For the Fairphone (Gen. 6) to catch up will definitely take more than a year, if not longer.

Replying to
@tthbaltazar@chaos.social A not very clean branch is here: https://github.com/z3ntu/linux/commits/fp3-6.16-camera/ But essentially all the cameras in phones that I know of are sensors that send image data as raw bayer via MIPI CSI-2 protocol, and the control of the sensor is happening via I2C.

@grahamvh@social.librem.one You need to use "pmbootstrap install" with the "--fde" flag. You cannot use prebuilt images as they can't be encrypted in-place.

@gri573@ieji.de @corvus_ch@social.corvus-ch.name iirc with 6.17.6 upgrade in pmaports charging status should work well, and battery percent works with +-10% deviation or something, so useful but not great
