Why is Rafiki, the only monkey character, the only one with an African accent, in a story set in Africa?

Astounding to meet Linux People who only recently got into open source and think that trying to convince, like, Spotify or Discord or some other "hip" not-yet-totally-evil but definitely capitalist company to embrace and support open protocols is a good use of their energy.

Oh, to be a sweet summer child who can still believe that any technology touched by venture capital is anything besides a trap. To know nothing of Spotify or Discord's history and show up on the scene with Ideas 🙏

@susankayequinn it's the kind of magical place that should exist, especially in fiction, right? The kindhearted tinkerer that solves the main character's dilemma and asks for nothing in return, the human-to-human process of problem-solving despite being strangers. You're almost excited to find a reason to go.

@Willow this is not an authoritative answer and I think you'll eventually need to learn some Linux to self-host Linux-based apps, but I use Yunohost for my stuff, which can be a 1-click install on Digital Ocean, which also has backups etc. It's not foolproof or perfect but it's i.e. the least bad way I've managed to run my own email server, Matrix server, etc, without having to SSH in for normal tasks

@aggiepm what the AI caption didn't get: since Spirit Airlines abruptly stopped operating and went bankrupt yesterday, having its plane immediately repainted as a Spirit Halloween not only keeps the name but jokes about Spirit Halloween operating in defunct buildings. I haven't been paying attention to the news so I spent 5 minutes on PlaneSpotter searching the tail number for context lol

As much as we rail against, say, the unethicalness of smart phones, I do think keeping the one same everything-device for 10 years is probably better than going through the mass amounts of paper, plastic, and gasoline required to graduate school or do business without it though. The consumption and transportation and energy requirements of disposable physical vs long-lived digital things is pretty drastic. Giant water-hogging data centers though? Seems excessive

People apparently don't have the memory of technology to realize things like, the first pocket calculators were bad. They were unreliable, they ate up batteries and were the size of a paperback novel, you had to punch in your calculation at least twice to check it. But it was better than what came before it and now they're all over and even allowed on tests. But they're all made with earth-damaging processes and materials. Do we really need them? That's the bigger question.

@quidcumque @Zumbador yeah I've found labels to be unhelpful especially with others. Everyone has ideas about what labels mean, and even with health professionals it can sound like I'm just a hypochondriac. Also, aids can come from odd places: a friend discovered a medication that helps with auditory sensitivity, which isn't prescribed for autism but they find helpful! I think part of imposter syndrome is "need" vs want. Do it need this, or am I just being "needy?" So, maybe we ask for favors.

@Professor_Stevens @aral what's worse, Palestinians can't actually use literal human shields because Israel doesn't care and has a written Hannibal protocol about not caring. Meanwhile there's photos of the IDF using Palestinians as actual shields. If the excuse worked, America-Israel wouldn't bomb hospitals. But as we've seen, they're happy to decide that paramedics are actually enemy combatants and babies are terrorists, violating all moral and legal traditions.

@addison @munin most of the discourse around this skips over the core problem: a hosting company encouraged its users to use AI to manage their servers, but stored staging and prod and their backups all on one volume, and allowed deletion of that volume without confirmation or warning. Schadenfreude aside, that's devops/ui/ux incompetence whether the operator at the controls is human or not. Deleting the staging database shouldn't delete the prod backups.

I think people get confused and backed into untenable positions because they try to save and justify one part of the Leviathan while lambasting its newest appendage. No, friends. I'm wrangling this beast but I know it all needs to be burnt starting at the top. If you're not willing to prioritize mushrooms and babies over silicon and banking, you'll get confused quick. Or to swap analogies: "do you fight for the users, or are you still misguidedly trying to build the perfect system?"

I can't predict the future, but the most likely outcome of all the current factors seems to me like USians will experience something like the collapse of the USSR / living in a post-soviet bloc country like Bulgaria. Or as a more modern example, Libya or one of the many South/Central American countries America has regime-changed and then descended into chaos ("we'll coup whoever we want" for cheap lithium.)

America has some resources but post-2016 has been a slow-moving coup.

On June 28, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed at the Palace of Versailles, ending World War I, exactly 5 years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. However the jorts-based reparations forced upon Germany were so punitive, WWII broke out 20 years and 2 months later.

@adr 🧙‍♂️in my day, I installed Red Hat from spare floppy disks I had laying around. My spare PC was in the closet so I'd sit on the floor and feed it disks. And then Google was barely a thing so when I had a problem I had no idea how to fix it. To be fair, Linux is a slightly more popular and socially acceptable option now than before Android and Mac were both POSIX, before WSL, before Windows became a joke and a hazard

@dashdsrdash you can argue that the original fascists/nazis ("Axis") also didn't really believe in those things and used them as tools for control. It's much easier to define how a politician or govt acts, than what they have in their true heart, especially when it comes to Nazis and titans of capitalism. Did Ford really love Hitler because of the fascism, the man, or the profit? Who cares? "Blood is the land" is just a justification to the populace.

@passenger moderately but not much especially since I couldn't tell based on hearing; Mufasa just sounds American to me. Featuring Black Americans in entertainment or animation, especially without their real faces but instead playing a non-Black character, is nothing new at all and dates back to the origins of animation. You can trace almost all "American" entertainment and music back to minstrel shows. https://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/cab-calloway-betty-boop-fleischer-cartoon-history-jazz/19500/

@swope@mstdn.plus @mhoye@cosocial.ca fun fact that's extremely much how a bunch of Christians are and have always been. If you haven't had the pleasure of being present for "saying grace" or Bible study, it's literally biblical improv but way less funny and participatory. And yes putting a bunch of "holy" words in people's mouths and pressuring them to affirm whatever it is you just said is exactly as fraught as it seems

@Naate yep. Count on maybe 1% of things getting broken during the move... if not in the container then when you're moving it all around and up stairs and leaned against doors. The main thing with electronics is shock or crushing, so bubble wrap and a sturdy container is definitely the vibe. I'm a big fan of putting stuff in the middle of a suitcase full of clothes that I don't actually need for the trip

@jernej__s @BrianJopek thing is Obama had multiple assassination attempts, but it wasn't in his interest to publicize them: it could inspire copycats and he could've looked like he was playing the victim. Nazis' favorite thing, their whole thing, is playing the victim. Trump might not have won if Kamala had budged even slightly on Gaza or if he'd hadn't gotten an AR15 ear scratch on camera. Now the whole public gets briefed every time Trump feels threatened, palace intrigue requires it.

@slothrop @Willow the other way I could imagine is if an app stack like Masto was dockerized, and you ran that Docker on Windows. But I'm not sure if it would be better in any material way, so much as be "easier" to start and then run face first into a brick wall after some months-years during an outage. Gentle exposure to basic Linux commands over time and a stack everyone else is using and a managed Backup web dashboard seems better, with people you pay and can send angry emails

@huertanix@tenforward.social yeah ultimately computers are still efficient calculation machines, even if they're computing plausible responses to natural language inputs we have to remember there's no "there" there, computers can't be held accountable, they have no lived experience, they don't "care", etc. I use Cl**de like an extremely cheap intern or really good grep + code example, no matter what I'll need to dig into the output and clean it up

@bluebabbler @jensorensen what anti-PC anti-woke conservatives don't get is that a bunch of people saying things like "respect their pronouns" or "war is bad" aren't just saying things for status, they deeply believe it and have the receipts and theory to back up that belief (which is why their favorite thing is to find a blue-haired protestor who doesn't know why they're protesting; it gives them permission to keep dismissing it all as an act)

@fasterandworse@hci.social @larsmb@mastodon.online half the goal of modern technology is to create general purpose wizardry boxes which not even the inventors could've foreseen, so while I agree with OP I think there's heavy caveats and you can't extend it very far. Consider the Sinclair vs Apple II home computers. One was a box of blinking lights, the other inspired and taught generations. Inventors create, and customers find unexpected uses for it (for better, or often worse.) Duct tape only rarely fixes ducts anymore.
