Periodic reminder - I'm maintaining the Internet of Trash list - https://github.com/unixorn/internet-of-trash/.

This is a list of devices to avoid with the reason why - typically companies like Chamberlain that lock out local control or put it behind a paywall.

If you've found a device that sucks, please make a PR or an issue about it so I can update the list.

Periodic reminder for people interested in #HomeLab and #SelfHosting There is a @homelab@fedigroups.social bot that replaces the old gup.pe homelab bot. Mention it in your homelab or self hosting posts and it will boost them. Follow it to see all the homelab posts it boosts that may not normally get federated to your instance. For those who don’t know, these bots exist because when you look for a a hashtag, your server only checks the posts that have been federated to it. In order for a message to be federated to your server, the author (or one of the people boosting it) have to be followed by someone on your server. If no one touching the message is being followed, it’ll never get federated to your server and you won’t see it. Hashtags are great for finding messages, but only messages that were federated to your server. They don’t help message propagation.

Periodic git-extra-commands announcement

https://github.com/unixorn/git-extra-commands is a collection of #git helper scripts and other git-related resources I've accumulated over the years.

You don't need a ZSH framework to use it - the framework code just adds the repo's bin directory to your PATH automatically.

Saw this on slack - https://github.com/Lucaslhm/Flipper-IRDB

It's a collection of codes for Flipper Zero so you can use it as a remote control.

I'm tagging in IOT and HomeAssistant because the codes could be converted for use there.

Every time I update my United credentials I get irritated by their #infosec incompetence.

The security questions require you to pick answers only from a dropdown menu. It barely even qualifies as checkbox security.

What other incompetence is hiding behind the scenes?

Found this nice tui for kubernetes this weekend - https://github.com/janosmiko/lfk

One of the things I like about it is that it has #argocd specific logic - you can use it to alter argo settings and do other things you might otherwise do with the argocd command line tool

Looks pretty neat, especially for #homelab @homelab@fedigroups.social #k8s users

@thegibson@masto.hackers.town @cyanautik@infosec.exchange

I act with the assumption that all #IOT devices will never get firmware updates, so I won't get anything that isn't controllable locally.

Where possible I'll reflash devices with #ESPHome because that gets updates.

Always remember that the two S-es in IOT stand for security and support.

@blenderfox @homelab I need to poke at them both a bit more before deciding. I only started using k8s in my homelab relatively recently when I finally took at look at #TalosLinux. #Talos made all the annoyance of having to maintain the VM k8s is running on go away, and it's forced me to have better habits at home about checking everything into git since I can't just ssh into the VM for maintenance.

4th Generation Shelly security issue

https://troypoint.com/smart-home-flaw-lets-hackers-open-your-garage-door/

TL;DR - 4th generation Shelly devices are leaving their 'Shelly' WIFI AP on that's used for initial configuration, even after they've been configured to join your real WIFI network. Anyone can join it and issue commands to the device, like opening your garage door.

@thegibson@masto.hackers.town

This is the way. After we remodeled our kitchen, all the new appliances had wifi options.

salesman said "You can control the temperature settings of your fridge/preheat your oven when you're on your way home. It's so convenient"

Super convenient for the jackass black hat who decides to defrost every BRANDNAME fridge in North America for the lolz.

Or worse, turns on every oven.

@rudy Next time I'll try that first. It feels like maybe HA needs to rediscover the MQTT device topics. I vaguely recall reading something a while back about z2m sending discovery messages when it discovers new devices were added/removed and that's what triggers HA to start looking at device topics. If that's the case z2m probably also sends the discovery messages when it boots up and starts detecting "new" devices.

Yet another reason to not enable passkeys anywhere.

https://blog.timcappalli.me/p/passkeys-prf-warning/

TL;DR - If an idiot website uses your passkey to encrypt your data, losing/deleting the passkey will almost certainly mean losing your data.

Of course we should all be backing up our stuff locally instead of trusting cloud services, especially for irreplaceable things like pictures and movies, but lets be real, the average user doesn't.

#dataloss #passkey #passkey_security #datahoarding

Please, please, please stop using passkeys for encrypting user data
Timbits

Please, please, please stop using passkeys for encrypting user data

Passkeys are the future of authentication, but using them for data encryption is a disaster waiting to happen. Overloading these credentials creates a dangerous blast radius that can lead to the irreversible loss of a user
