@cstross@wandering.shop and forms! We need a drop dead simple standardized way to create and fill in forms, that works online or in a local file, without having to deal with PDFs. Make the appearance non customizable, except by the end user, for their accessibility needs.

@joe@f.duriansoftware.com I love Dina! It does have bold, and italics too I think. I'm not certain precisely what size it is, but it's small and comes in three sizes if memory serves. I think it's only available from here, or at least this is where I get it from: https://github.com/zshoals/Dina-Font-TTF-Remastered

I see a respected high profile poster complaining bitterly about mansplainers on Mastodon, seemingly without awareness that those hated replies aren't explaining at *them*. These are people thinking through what has been said, making associations to what they already know, and articulating that minor additional insight in a paragraph for the benefit of themselves and other readers like them. Masto is a conversational medium and this is what conversation is.

@stux@mstdn.social oh and then describe the ways we can make small repayments. Let our developers spend a little time contributing small fixes or improvements back to the libraries we use. Open source some judiciously chosen component we've written ourselves. Contribute financially to one of the services like Tidelift, that distributes money to authors, in proportion to the amount their work is used by others. Or adopt a particular project that is critical to us, and pay the developer of it directly.

@stux@mstdn.social @bagder@mastodon.social Then I compare that to the size of all the dozens of small open source libraries we use. This frequently outweighs the code we've written ourselves around 10:1. The boxes shrink to make room for bigger squares holding them up. Imagine if we'd had to write those ourselves. Or pay someone else to do it. We would have spent ten times more on salaries than we've currently spent on development. It's often unclear that the company could ever be viable under those circumstances.

@stux@mstdn.social @bagder@mastodon.social But wait, I forgot to include the giant dependencies we rely on, like Django or Postgres. All boxes shrink by another order of magnitude revealing these whale sized new ones. Finally, I add in Python and Linux themselves. Our original code has shrunk to the size of shoeboxes resting on mountains, invisibly small. Instead of paying for the colossal amount of work to create those things we rely on, we've been gifted them for free. It's ok that we've taken them…

I'm only belatedly realizing that the apparent success of LLM generative text solutions in the market is showing the reason why success comes to people who are full of bluster and confidence without caring about important details or correctness.

@stux@mstdn.social I have a short brown bag presentation I give at employers who aren't sufficiently enlightened about open source. I start by showing the amount of code we've written as a company - for a software start up, that might be on the order of 100k lines of code. I'll show a slide representing this amount of code as one or more boxes. I'll make some arm-waving equivalence between that, and the amount of $ revenue we earn from it, or the number of person hours it took us to write it. Then…

@Guillotine_Jones@beige.party @emersunn@beige.party For the sake of nuanced precision though, I'll add that there are, obviously, at least as many unevenly distributed veins of smart, well-informed people here. The problem, I think, stems more from the energetic exuberance with which US culture encourages and empowers everybody(*) to speak up and make their mark on the world, without the kinds of gatekeeping and crushing embarrassment that might, in other cultures, somewhat reign in some of our more dimwitted brethren.

It would be interesting to hear where the original engineers weren't doing that, it the rewriting engineers were simply deleting the failing test.

@grimalkina@mastodon.social reminds me of conversations I've had with my boomer parents who are big believers in the psychological necessity for society to enact revenge on criminals. I've argued that this may not minimize recidivism, hence perpetuating cycles and increasing levels of crime and violence. Is nice to see indications that this could conceivably be better for the victims, too, under the right circumstances.

@anildash@me.dm @reflex@retrogaming.social Not least amongst those externalities being that "AI" as offered is yet another way for capital to commoditize labor, resulting in a further acceleration of the massive shift of value away from the working classes, directly to the very rich. And the environmental costs, and the plagiarism, and the unreliable results. It's too much of a cost, and I refuse to bear it, so yes, I will fight this technology, and every corporation shoving it needlessly into their products.

@anildash@me.dm @reflex@retrogaming.social I think perhaps the problem that hasn't been articulated is not that the "lovers" are choosing "bad tools" in the sense of unreliable results, but rather that the negative externalities of the tools seem to outweigh their benefits, and it's the rest of us who have to bear all those costs. So yes, I will happily say it out loud - I want those users to not have the option to use "AI" in the ways that are currently being offered.

@bookspiegel@mastodon.social @Drahngis@social.vivaldi.net That's not the question though, I don't think. We're not debating whether social media should exist or not. We're debating whether the net harms from the government allowing minors to access social media (bearing in mind parents can still prevent access) are greater than the harms of government being allowed to strip all privacy from every online interaction and giving them the ability to censor any site or service they don't like.

Top level list MUST be brief, maybe one line of text or one row in a spreadsheet per project. This way they can be re-sorted, re-grouped, or, for example, atomically deleted without any hassle or reservation. Any project that needs more documentation than that, the documentation should live with the project or in a dedicated folder for that project.
