Your favorite trans femme tomboy. I am a computer toucher for money, but aviatrix, photographer, writer, cellist, and sexy gay menace for fun. Some delightful combination of autistic, ADHD, plural, sex-positive ace, depressed, and generally neurospicy.

This account will occasionally post mature content, but fair warning that most of what I talk about is self-absorbed trans nonsense (of the best kind, but still). I technically have an after-dark alt at @taedryn@eldritch.cafe, but I suspect that's unlikely to become active again any time soon.

Follow requests are active, and I'm really only interested in being perceived by other trans and queer folks when I'm here, so if I turn down your request, chances are good that's why.

Profile picture is a commissioned portrait of my OC Tatiana Fenrir, by @kalandras_ from the cursed Xitter hellsite before it was so cursed (no idea if kalandras is still there or not; I hope not).

Informative discussion of puberty and breast development; specifically helpful for trans femme folks
So, I have a bone to pick (so to speak). There's this idea running around that in trans women, breast growth stops around the 2 year mark. That idea is completely incorrect. (Note that, for the sake of simplicity, I'm going to refer to "cis girls" and "cis women" a lot, but what I really mean is "anyone who went through an estrogen-primary puberty and had roughly normal breast development" which is a lot to type out every time. And by "trans women" what I mean is "anyone who went through a testosterone-primary puberty without notable breast growth, and starts taking exogenous estrogen which stimulates breast growth." Also too much to type out every time.) This completely incorrect idea is based (as far as I can tell) on a study by Meyer et al. in 1986: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3013122/ It says, right there in the abstract: Maximum breast growth required 2 years of [hormone] therapy. I'm not going to pay $40 to read someone's out-of-date opinions on a cohort of 60 "transsexuals" and equine estrogen (aka premarin, aka the stuff we stopped using years ago), so I won't try to prove to you that this is true, but I have heard and fully believe that this study was funded for, yes, two years' time. That is, they ran the study for two years, then stopped. Then they published their results. And, sure enough, they saw the maximum breast growth after 2 years. Because that was the end of their study. Now, unfortunately, a bunch of doctors who have "done their research" on trans medicine think that breast growth "plateaus" at 2 years (it says that in the study, too). They tell their transfemme patients this, resulting in a panicked frenzy when, at 2 years, said misinformed patient is freaking out over having barely any breast growth, much less what they were hoping for. If you look up Puberty on Wikipedia, it includes this sentence: On average, females begin puberty at age 10½ and complete puberty at ages 15–17 Now, I kinda hate math in this sort of message, but I'm gonna hit you with a bit of math here. 15 - 10.5 = 4.5 17 - 10.5 = 6.5 That is, on average, Wikipedia's authors think puberty lasts at least 4.5 years in cis girls, and can, again on average, last 6.5 years. There's no mention of outliers, but the phrase "on average" should tell you a lot (no one is actually average). Now, let us turn our sights on the Wikipedia article titled Breast Development. It has this gem for us: [Breast development] occurs across several phases, including prenatal development, puberty, and pregnancy. At menopause, breast development ceases and the breasts atrophy. (Emphasis mine) Hmm, how long is it between the onset of puberty and the start of menopause for most women? What's that, typically 35-45 years? Thanks, Wikipedia article on Menopause! Now, obviously trans women aren't going around getting pregnant (if you are, let a girl know, I know a couple thousand trans women whose attention just got riveted). So that's not a useful factor for us. But, like, let's look at the numbers again. Onset of puberty is around 10 1/2 years of age in cis girls. Puberty is considered "done" around 16 years, roughly. Pregnancy changes things, typically between 18 and 30, for most people who get pregnant (I'm guessing, don't @ me). Menopause typically starts in the 45 to 55 range. During that entire time, breast development is happening. If you compare cis women who are 16, and those who are, let's say, 22, you will typically see substantial differences in their bodies, without factoring pregnancy in. The colloquial term is "filling out." Their bodies change, and one of the things that fills out is typically their breasts. But wait, I hear you shouting loudly at your computer monitor, 22 years old? That's [I count on my fingers] almost 12 years! Yes, that's right. 12 or so years of development gives cis women adult looking breasts. Gee, I wonder if trans women, who are undergoing exactly the same puberty process as cis women, just later in life, might have a similar timing? Like, I don't know how else to say it, my lovely transfemmes. At 2 years, your breast development is just getting started. Don't let Meyer et al, from 1986 -- under-funded science from fully forty years ago -- tell you how your body works. Don't let under-informed doctors tell you how your body works. Yeah, 10-12 years is a long time. Even four and a half years seems pretty long. Of course, you can get surgical augmentation any time you like, it's your body, that's the whole point. Wear the push-up bra. Use those cutlets (silicone breast forms, if you don't already know the term). Cis women certainly do. You should too, if you want to. But it's going to take a while for your breasts to fully develop, and you might be really happy with the result, if you can be patient and run the marathon without trying to sprint through it. My main point is, don't panic about some mythical yet oft-repeated 2 year number. It's absolute garbage.

Any time you see "New package, same great product!" marketing on something in a store, I guarantee they just shrinkflationed you hard. This package used to hold 56 pads for the same price as what now gets you 40. The individual pads are not materially different.

Question for the assembled brain-trust. What's a good author/writer-focused, or even romance-focused Mastodon instance? I created an alt for my writer stuff, but am realizing I may want it on a more purposeful server. It has to have moderated sign-ups, an active admin/moderation team, and should ideally have a much higher than stock Mastodon character limit (the instance I'm on right now limits us to 640k characters, I think, because of course no one should need more than 640k).

I don't suspect a lot of the people I'm connected to here need this reminder, but just in case: "yes" is consent. Anything else: "maybe" or "umm" or "I guess" are not consent. They mean NO. "Yes" based on incomplete or inaccurate information is not informed consent, and thus not consent. "Yes" given under duress, while intoxicated, or under any kind of threat, no matter how insubstantial it may seem to you, is not consent. "Yes" given after the fact is consent for what happens after yes is given. Whatever happened before that did not have consent. The very best consent is enthusiastic: "Hell yes, I'm super into that," "I'd love to receive your newsletter once a week," "I absolutely want to trade my soul for superhuman violin skills," things of this nature. But if you don't have at least "yes" from the individual then it's not consent. An organization cannot consent for its members.¹ This applies to: Fedi servicesEmployment²Interpersonal interactionsAnything that impacts another person's autonomy In addition, consent can be revoked at any time, for any reason, or no reason. Consent to one thing does not equal consent to something else. If you don't have a clear "yes" (whether verbal or gesture or web form or other means of clearly communicating "yes") then the answer is NO. Today's lesson brought to you by a thoroughly exhausting back and forth with a tech bro who really really doesn't get it. ¹ Technically, an organization can set up a legal framework whereby blanket consent can be offered by members to the org, who can then consent for the members. This is not a trustworthy practice, it leads to horrible abuses of power. Big ol red flag. ² But it's effectively unenforceable for employers, unfortunately, at least in the US.

Ars Technica making it about trans people when it's not
I'm not possibly creating Yet Another Goddamn Online Account to leave a comment, but of course this Ars story had to mention that the shooter was trans, a detail which is completely irrelevant to the rest of the story. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/09/lawsuit-demands-openai-pay-for-new-school-after-chatgpt-used-in-shooting If the shooter were Black or Jewish or any other category of person, they would be rightly excoriated for bringing race into a story which has nothing to do with race. I found one (1) comment asking why the shooter's gender was mentioned when it wasn't relevant, and one telling them it's because trans people are apparently "making what's in their pants a political cudgel" before I gave up on the comments. If you have an account there, maybe drop a comment asking why the shooter was identified as trans (and then misgendered on top of it).

mastodon/fedi improvement idea
Mastodon (and fedi) instance sign-up idea: Allow instances to use an arbitrary external system to qualify new account requests. The idea is, the current account application process on Mastodon is essentially unworkable, in the age of AI, and the coming age of agentic AI. It's far too easy to bury admins/mods under a barrage of almost-real-looking applications if there's any new-account moderation. This used to be the reasonable balance point between "open registration" and "invite-only," but it is getting difficult to manage now. So, perhaps we should offer admins the ability to say, "Go to this webpage, and when that page decides you're cool, it'll call into a URL and either create or recommend the requested account." It would be a setting in the Mastodon settings, which describes a URL to call when a new account is requested. It would offer a properly-authenticated URL for the external site to call back with the new account information. That external site could do anything to validate that a new user meets the instance's requirements. Maybe it's a Captcha. Maybe it's a short questionnaire. Maybe it's a back-and-forth communication with the new user. Maybe it's a brain teaser that's relatively easy for a human, but difficult for AI. Maybe it's something no one has thought of yet. Maybe it's a combination of these things, or a random selection of them. It's up to the admins to create a selection process that fits their server. It provides an option, and it doesn't depend on the Mastodon development process and timeline to address a rapidly-evolving situation. Fedi is full of excellent, eager software developers, and I guarantee that it wouldn't take very long until there was a pretty cool suite of software available to validate new user applications, which could be installed alongside the Mastodon software package. It's not going to be trivial to implement, but it's going to be so much simpler and quicker than asking the core Mastodon development team (or any other fedi software team) to implement such a validation system that actually meets any of the needs of the instances which would want to use it. This is a system that would allow every instance to have a properly tailored sign-up process. It would be relatively easy to add, with a simple API contract. It shouldn't be required, merely offered as an option alongside open sign-up, moderated sign-up, and invite-only sign-up. It would simplify the lives of many admins by making it harder to create crap accounts, and be adaptable as the threat model evolves. It would result in fewer moderator actions. It would lower stress. Seems like a win, to me.

The impact specifically on local labor is nothing alike between the two.

I was thinking about this last night, and realized I should actually ask the question. Poll time!

So, I decided a year or two ago that I was probably asexual, based on the evidence I had at the time. Since then, it's become clearer that this is the case.

However, this has not done anything particularly good for me, aside from giving me information to pass to any theoretical new relationship partners. I feel worse about myself, I think because I'm no longer getting the flirty interaction I was enjoying, even if sex was never the object. Like, everyone heard me talking about being ace and decided, probably out of respect for me, to knock off the flirting. No flirting means no deeper relationships, or so it seems, as most of my trans femme friends are somewhere between very and deeply sexual, so it feels like there's this invisible barrier between us.

That got me to wondering, do my ace friends feel similarly? Obviously it is now poll time.

Ace friends, how does the fact of your aceness impact your life? How do you feel about it? (I realize this is a very simple poll and cannot possibly encompass how you feel; I'm just looking for big trends, please comment for more nuance.)

This is a long shot, but just in case: anyone have experience with AlloClae? It's a cosmetic filler which is very new on the market, introduced in 2024, so there's not a lot of actual accounts from actual patients out there. I'll spare you descriptions of how it's made, iykyk.

My surgeon is proposing she could use it as an alternative to liposuction for an upcoming procedure, which would pretty substantially reduce some risks I have due to a clotting disorder (lipo is not a kind procedure when it comes to causing bleeding, which both risks the bleeding never stopping if I'm on my anti-coagulant, or forming clots too easily if I'm not on it).

Reddit has a few stories from people who had horrible problems, and a few stories from people who had a really good experience. The internet is chock full of people trying to sell me surgery with AlloClae, and apparently it's popular because it can be applied in some cosmetic applications as a simple, no-general-anaesthesia outpatient procedure, and it tends to retain its volume in the short term. I don't really trust either source, because people get online to complain 100x or 1000x often more than they get online to say everything was cool, and the marketing messages are inherently untrustworthy.

There are literally no long-term results to read up on. The risks seem to be comparable to any other fat grafting procedure, based on what little I can find.

So, perhaps fedi can help. Do you have direct first-hand or second-hand experience with AlloClae? I'd love to hear what you think.

@sophiesometimes I had this, for sure: I thought I was allo for a long time, switching to demi around the mid 2010s as I realized there was Something Going On, but not being sure what it was. After I switched to E, it became clear that T was driving my sexual behavior, for the most part. My body was into it, and my mind kind of never was. It explains an awful lot about my sex life in the past, which was occasionally quite active, but never had the draw so many other people seemed to experience. It also seemed to be very focused on fulfilling a body need, like needing to eat. I recall watching a Wes Anderson movie about a train ride, where two characters meet, have sex in a bathroom, and part ways, and thinking to myself "this must be a completely fictional thing." It was simply incomprehensible that such a thing could happen in reality. I felt the same way about one-night stands, but I've been assured they're a real thing. Of course, I ultimately realized that the entirety of my "sexual" attraction was actually just gender envy, which I still feel, but can clearly classify as a "want to be her" reaction now.

@connynasch@mastodon.social I wish we had a law like that in the US. It's common, but not mandated, for stores to list a price per appropriate unit (volume, weight, count, etc.) on the shelf tag, but they're inconsistent, so one tag will list price per ounce, another for the same product from a different brand will list price per unit or per liquid ounce (which is different from a dry ounce, I want metricization so hard), and so on. Makes a useful feature pretty maddening to attempt to actually use.

And almost nothing that indicates the driver is trans.

It's almost like... marketing to trans people who can afford a car is... pointless?

I suspect that one of my problems may also be that I'm letting the label define me instead of the other way around, which is something I'm prone to if I'm not careful.

One thing I need to work on, which you have already done, is stepping back from using the label where it's going to be misinterpreted. I don't know how to do that yet, as most of my ace discussions are online, where it's all text, and I end up saying ace as a way to shortcut a lot of explanation, often to my detriment.

But realistically, it'll be a catastrophe as society moves further and further into complete dependence on satellite-based systems. We keep turning off ground-based services like VORs for airplanes which mean that when KS happens, the vast majority of airplane traffic will just... stop. Most delivery vehicles use GPS-based navigation and tracking. Many private drivers are functionally incapable of navigating without GPS-based maps. There are internet and communication links that are impossible without satellites, which will cut off small communities all over the world. There are obviously alternatives, but they've all fallen out of favor, and will be difficult or impossible to resurrect on a short timescale. No one still owns a Thomas Guide (popular detailed road map in the US, for those who don't know the name). Visual navigation for commercial flights isn't possible or legal, or they'll have to fly below 18k feet, which would increase fuel costs some massive amount, 100% or 200% or something (depends on the plane). Vast networks of computers depend on GPS signals for timekeeping, which has follow-on effects that could disrupt every municipal system everywhere, cutting everyone off from clean water, power, fuel, food, etc. No one seems to be working towards backup systems for satellites that could go out of service (or if they are, they're being quiet about it -- this is admittedly not something I've looked into). I also want to watch the world burn a bit, but KS would be a worldwide population-altering event, and not in a fun way.

@nik@toot.teckids.org That's a good point, I was not thinking about children's consent, just adults.

@caraplayingstuff@tabletop.social It is, I will admit, a large proportion of high value items. The cheeses are about $8 each. The candy is $13. The butter is $10. But everything else is $6 or less each.
