Of course, at some point in the 2000s a designer at #renault decided that a flat roof rack is practical but not looking nice. So they curved it by 15mm (7.5mm on each side).

My "new" 1983 vintage roof box is not curved on the bottom side. It got steel tubing and a sturdy zigzag pattern on the bottom. It. Will. Not. Bend. And that's fine.

So to mount it in 2026 I need spacers. And as we live in the future™ now I just fired up #freecad and let the #3dprinter do the work.

This is no shiny fancy thing, just a wedge with a hole. But in 2026 it just makes sense to let the machines do the job - I would not be faster/better if I started to cut and grind plastic or wood.

Tested at up to 130 km/h the roof box is nice: nearly no sound, just a silent "sssshhh" wind noise, and its not noticeable regarding driving dynamics at least in empty state. and the whole thing is just 2m tall.

Update on our #rescuebunny:

  • he is a boy, and neurered now
  • xray shows that the ear canal that did not look right at first is ok, just needs weekly cleaning to avoid an infection. No surgery needed.
  • no infectious diseases, just the normal parasites that get dealt with by medication now

Edit: blury early morning nose boop

I killed my #fairphone3 charging electronics by accidentally placing it on a cheap power supply that apparently coupled magnetically to some components on the phones main board. I noticed this as the power supply turned off as soon as I placed the #fp3 on top. It took a day for me to realize that the #fairphone does not charge anymore.

In other words expect "filmed on a potato" picture quality from me and my 14 y/o backup phone in the next days.

Ok, so I noticed that all the pros mark their #scaffolding with some unique stripe pattern, color or logo...

With the power of #3dprinting a stencil and some vintage orange spray paint (FCKW free!) I decided to follow this trend and mark my scaffolding. There is only one obvious choice for this...

The animal shelter will do the paperwork for a found pet so the owner can claim it back. They told us that this little bunny has a brother (looks similar, found at same location a few days ago). The bunny can stay with us for now and got a bigger room until his vet checkup in a few days. I hope he/she will get along a with our other bunny that lost his brother a few weeks ago and is alone now. #bunniesofmastodon

@yngmar @smallsolar built one of those a few years ago. The hardest part was to find a suitable panel in terms of "small but extra thick frame for maximum sturdyness". 200W panel, 300W inverter limited (to stay below the legal limit for overall power fed into the grid). I opted for cheap surplus/scratched steel legs mounted with excess 19" rack mounting screws. I used rubbery plastic spacers to help with the bending force applied to the panel frame. The panel has protective plastic covers on the corners. If drilling holes into the frame, put a cloth and a piece of wood anside to not hit the plastic surface with the tip of the drill. I used two aluminum rails to mount the inverter. As those inverters are potted I just removed four screws that hold on the cover and replaced them with slightly longer ones that go though holes on the aluminum profiles.

Gerne :boost_req:

And for that one the driver is placed way higher and the vehicle body is steel. It can drift around corners. The City El is fiberglass and the driver is placed really low so should handle even better.

@hp@mastodon.tmm.cx @foone@digipres.club welcome to how I do some long running stuff at work: twice. Imagine running some resource heavy task that takes hours and makes the computer unusable. Run it over night? Haha, no. Run it the next day again, drink coffee and make sure it does not reboot, all while sitting next to a computer that sounds like a jet engine. The ways to get this disabled don't work all the time. If this is clearly disabled and I find corrupted data and entries in the Windows logs indicating "reboot for update"... at some point the effort to get this fixed is not worth it anymore. In one instance I just airgapped a system that was running an important test for like 6 weeks.

@neotoy@mastodon.social that thing is a great example of an invention that is absolutely obvious and self explaining if its on the table, but non trivial to come up with. Moving the pivot point of the handles allows it to fold and with two stages it amplifies the force approx. 10 times. I wonder why there are no modern implementations of that idea.

@RueNahcMohr @tubetime at least for desktop use win9x UI/UX is still better as what's common today. Its clear which window is in focus. Visible scroll bars. Actual window borders. "3D" buttons - we can render more than 256 colors now and decide to make everything one color... Windows have that little resize thing in the lower right corner. Start menu does not provide internet results - I am looking for the notepad.exe on this computer, not some paper notebook on some web shop.

@smallsolar sure, I am happy if people get inspired by my builds. I still have no good feeling how much weight can be put on it, especially in one small spot. Like I would not put a big heavy pot of food right in the middle of it. Or push myself up from it. Did some testing by putting some weights in the middle with a piece of wood as reference to check how far it bends and stopped at ~5kg as I noticed it bending. But a laptop and some light use will certainly be fine. Maybe I picked not the best module, but ~200W seems to be a sweet spot beteeen module size, sturdyness and cost. I thought about cutting down some old piece of multiplex to put on top in case it is used as a real table. Another downside is that it gets quite hot without some kind of cover (tablecloth etc.) @yngmar

@VintageProject@oldbytes.space A friend (who is an electrician) bought a house where the previous owner paid a lot to "upgrade" the wiring etc. ; He ripped it all out. I found multiple really dangerous things while redoing the wiring and outlets in our house. The main issue is that those companies can get away with doing the bare minimum and most customers will not notice as they have no idea. And now imagine that this is common not just for electrical work but for other "professionals" as well. I really don't want to DIY everything but I really don't want to pay someone a lot of money to do something "professionally" if I could just DIY it better and cheaper.

Apparently its really hard to describe issues with things (e.g. computers/software) in a way that the person reading it knows what's going on and can give helpful feedback.

E.g. just now I received a text message from my gf: "I need help, the virtual machine does not start"

And I immediately wrote back: "what exactly are you doing? clicking where? do you get any error message?" (I was thinking maybe the last kernel update did not trigger a rebuild of the virtualbox kernel modules)

In the end it turned out that an update changed the UI and the list of VMs is now hidden in a tab, and she just clicked on "open" which allows to open a VM via the file system and got lost. I think this change is stupid, but that's not my point here.

Is there any good info on "how to write a good support ticket or bug report", but for people like my mom, gf, my 80 y/o neighbour etc. so I can spend my time helping solving problems and not figuring out what the problem actually is?

@dilmandila@mograph.social "since everything is 3d printed in the backyard, no two cars can be alike": standardized components still make sense, just because people will share design files and cooperate on improvement. Customization most likely will happen for aesthetic or special functional purposes. If you think about all the different makes and models of cars that are out there today, a main reason for all the different variants is to have something new to sell every year. If that incentive goes away and cars are designed by the actual users I expect that there will be less different base models. Of course the customizations based on those base models will be infinite.

Kein SUV. Keine Ladekante. Keine 500 Steuergeräte. Kein Assistenzfirlefanz und keine Touchscreens. Und idealerweise läuft das dann auch 30+ Jahre ohne nennenswerte Defekte wie mein aktuelles Auto.
