So, I own a home now in Oslo 🎉

Interior photos will come later but it's a little 55 square meter, 2 bed (gotta have a guest room for visitors!) in a lovely old block in the Sagene neighborhood. (If you're from SF, think Noe Valley vibes).

I planned to rent for my first 1-2 years here, but when my landlord unexpectedly sold my unit, I decided I was probably wiser to buy a place.

I'm so excited to fully move in soon and settle in!

Assistive Access might be one of the coolest things I got to work on while I was on the accessibility team at Apple (tho it's hard to pick!): https://www.wired.com/story/this-buried-apple-feature-turns-an-iphone-into-the-perfect-kids-dumb-phone/ So awesome to read about someone discovering it and finding it so useful! Interesting too that their use case (a restricted phone setup for a child) is different from the intended one (a simplified setup for those with cognitive disabilities)!

So...I bought a place here in Oslo! A little 2 bedroom in a 101 year old building! 😍 Cannot believe it. Moving in July 1... I'm so grateful I found something. Having to move so soon after arriving (landlord selling my rental unit) was jarring and overwhelming. But thanks to the help and guidance from so many friends and, in truth, a lot of AI helping me parse Norwegian sales / legal documents... it's all coming together. 🤩

Something flipped in my brain a while ago that's really helped me. Whenever an interaction feels uncomfortable (note: NOT unsafe), I take it now as a good sign. It means I have something to learn.

I used to avoid these moments, and I still feel that pull sometimes. But over the past few years, I've found that by having them, I become less scared of them. And by being less scared, I'm more open to new experiences and conversations than I ever was before.

Just finished my A2 Norwegian class! Feeling pretty good at the basics - I can survive most common everyday situations and understand a surprising amount of Norwegian.

Up next, B1. I'm going to try a different approach and see what I like better. For A2, I did a class. For B1, I'm going to try self study + a weekly tutor and see what I like better. The classes were awesome, but the hardest part for me is speaking and my hope is 1:1 tutoring can help me there.

In love with this training space here in Oslo.

Also really happy with the progress I’m making in this sequence. It includes movements I couldn’t even do a year ago…let alone put into choreo. It’s still far from polished but it felt really good today! #aerialrope #circus

Practicing Norwegian every day with an LLM is hands down my favorite use of the tech. (I'm using Lumo right now.)

I've created different conversations to work on different skills, and no matter what, I have it correct me when I make mistakes. I've noticed big improvements in my Norwegian since I started doing this, and I'm excited to see how far it will take me.

In the end, nothing will beat talking to humans, but this is a game changer for day to day practice and consistency.

Landlord just decided she wants sell the apartment 25 DAYS after final lease was signed!!! 😡😭🫨

Trying to decide if it's time to learn about the tenant protection laws here in Norway and dispute it or just move out and move on. 🇳🇴🏡

The frustrating part is that I don't have enough time to wrangle a home purchase, so I'd bet stuck renting again and I am VERY tired of moving!

On the bright side, getting 3 days off for easter was lovely. 🐣

I feel proud of this. It’s hard to explain why. There are no big tricks. There are mistakes. I am improvising. But there’s something here… I so rarely like watching myself bc I always see someone trying to move like someone else. But here…this feels like a little bit of me. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DXeM7G0iLaF/?igsh=NGJ4ajdzcTExOXpu

I'm at that weird phase of learning a language (Norwegian) where I understand a surprisingly large amount (of the Oslo dialect) but I can say VERY little. And when I do talk, I sound like an llm trained on children's books and a single grammar table.

I treasure every single moment I get on my rope. Today I was tired and not feeling great, but still trained, and I'm so glad I did. I feel like it took me decades but I can finally tell (most of the time) the difference between "I shouldn't train" (i.e. I'll hurt myself) and "I don't want to train." When I can push myself into the gym on the latter day, 99/100 times, I'm so glad I did. It's healing! https://www.instagram.com/reel/DV_aVXFiNSe/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

RE: @_maxobermeier@hachyderm.io

I love Max's take here on owning things...on our relationship to products.

While I'm not a "true" minimalist, more and more, I find myself being very thoughtful before making any purchase, especially of a non-consumable. Max touches on a lovely idea here: that we should consider not just the give, but the take and the balance and maintenance of everything we buy--big and small--and ask ourselves: does this fit?

@jongary surprisingly not as much as I'd expected. generally I can get thru all my day to day interactions in Norwegian, but when things get complicated or with friends I still need to switch to English. I'm pleasantly surprised that folks will stay in Norwegian as long as I don't mess up too badly!

@romnes@mastodon.social hey thanks for this! from what I've been reading it sounds like I'm in a bit of a gray area b/c of this being a fixed-term lease with a 3-month mutual termination policy. That said, this is a great idea; I will absolutely be joining this and getting advice asap before my 1-month protest period expires.

@arroz so there's a minimum binding period for long term leases, but this was a fixed term 1 year lease which didn't seem to have one. BUT from what I'm reading courts may consider this unreasonable... which is why I'm trying to decide what's harder...getting legal in a new country or finding another apartment in a new country...

@antistasisats@mastodon.social thanks for the video! so a few things that maybe could help:

  • try to have chest even with or even just slightly lower than legs
  • keep rope in right arm and close to the pole
  • I tend to think about really driving with the leg far from the pole in a slight turn out, almost kicking back and around

have you done the role into wrapped back flag or "flag olé" as it's called? that helped me a ton to get started on this one!

I found this video super helpful! https://www.instagram.com/reel/DQWQRt9jEc-/?igsh=MXZsYmlpNXMzcGppeA==

🧵[1/2] After moving to Norway, the dust has settled and I'm finally able to compare my comp and taxes. It's interesting!

  • My gross salary dropped ~ 42% in Norway.
  • My rent dropped about 7% BUT my place in Oslo is larger and nicer than my place in the Bay Area. On avg rents here are about 40% cheaper than San Jose.
  • My effective income tax rate in the USA was about 35%. Norway: about 43%. **However there's also wealth tax here which will shave about 1% off my global net worth each year.

@schwa@mastodon.social @janl@narrativ.es I responded some here: https://macaw.social/@sommer/116137782985492710 -- but basically he norway system for me is no different than for people born here. The only "hard" part for me is coming in late, in the get assigned a doctor. finding a good doctor here can take a long time, so I'm starting that process now, when I already have health problems, and I can only change doctor 2x / year. doctors known to be good can have multi year waitlists. So functionally, that's a challenge.

@antistasisats Nothing as strict as weight lifters. But I do take a week off every 5-6 weeks. I train 3-4 days / week but am strict about not doing two back to back unless they were totally different muscularly (i.e. straps one day and the ground/approach the next). I also tend to cycle tricks for 6 weeks or so and then flow/expression for 6 week for so back and forth. I find this help me avoid overuse training the same trick for too long.

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@_maxobermeier/116093143224789780 It was so fun to be a beta tester for this awesome app. I keep the widget on my homescreen and use it to decide when to cook or when to heat via my wood fire rather than my electric heaters! Great work @_maxobermeier!!! Both on the app itself (it's beautiful!) and on building something to help people live greener lives!
