@KFears@mstdn.games It's a PCI (PCIe wasn't a thing then) extension card for IEEE-1394, commonly know as Firewire.

@henry@dindon.one These 1€ pieces of junk have externalities, and it's often taxpayers that are made to pay for those because companies are by their very nature freeloaders.

@PaulDavisTheFirst@fosstodon.org @samaaron@mastodon.social @mafe@layer8.space @ercanbrack@mastodon.online The hardware and drivers always give you power of 2 buffer sizes because of how ADCs and DACs work internally, that has nothing to do with the os, it also does that on Windows. WASAPI rebuffers on top of the driver to arrive at its weird behavior, I don't know why but it would be interesting to talk to the MS kernel people what their design goals were.
I think the reason why we are at this impasse is that you seem to be focused on the DAW plugin usecase, while I do mostly game engine and audio middleware plugins as well as juce standalone applications, where the buffer size is much more of a driver controlled runtime invariant as opposed to DAWs, where you have to account for sample accurate looping/automation stuff.
What I can tell you is that e.g. Unreal Engine does its own rebuffering to get back to power of 2 buffer sizes on top of what WASAPI does, because the game folk are pretty anal about performance.

@PaulDavisTheFirst@fosstodon.org @samaaron@mastodon.social @mafe@layer8.space @ercanbrack@mastodon.online In offline applications like DAWs, yes. In online applications outside of Windows audio it is *rare* to come accross a buffer that is not a power of 2 size. There the buffer size is dictated by the audio device driver and for all devices I have come across so far, the drivers let you set buffer sizes in powers of two (for good reasons).
Windows doesn't care however and sometimes rebuffers regardless of what the audio device does. E.g. pipewire will only change buffer size (they call it quantum IIRC) if explicitly required by an application. Windows just does as it pleases.
As you stated, it is not smart to make power of 2 buffer sizes a hard requirement for robustness, however for some codepaths, it is immensely beneficial for runtime performance.

@PaulDavisTheFirst@fosstodon.org @samaaron@mastodon.social @mafe@layer8.space @ercanbrack@mastodon.online Windows has a tendency to hand you buffer sizes that aren't a power of 2, the plugin host can't abstract that away for you unless it rebuffers, which would add latency.
This might seem inconsequential, but for stuff like the dft and some other dsp algorithms it has performance implications.

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online I've been developing VST, game engine & middleware plugins for almost 5 years and my main OS is Linux. As a consequence, all our plugins are also available on Linux, no showstoppers whatsoever. I also run Windows and macOS out of necessity, since our products are multi-platform and some compiler toolchains are only available on Windows.
Customer demand on the other hand is quasi non-existant since nobody targets native Linux. Shame, because Audio on Windows has been a dumpster fire for more than 20 years and there's no end in sight. Pipewire is so much better than WASAPI it's not even fair.
Edit: I should add that apart from JUCE or the respective game engine/middleware sdk, we completely rolled our own stack with only std lib dependencies, which puts us in a good position. If you depend on any system libs, that's where your life starts getting miserable.

Was machen diese Gestalten eigentlich Beruflich?
