#FairScan is simply an amazing piece of software. It's an Android app for turning photos of documents into PDF files.

As somemany without a dedicated scanner and frequently on the go, it's a lifesaver. It genuinely makes really good scans in the overwhelming majority of the times. Its UI is dead simple: has only the bare minimum of necessary buttons. It does its job well and doesn't overstay its welcome: no extra menus to click through, no pop-ups, no notifications. You open the app, do a photo, save the scan.

It's not flashy, but it is nonetheless exciting. It is a feat of a lot of effort and care to reduce friction so much.

Today, I once again wake up worrying about #Rust 's future.

Why is a shitbag such as #dtolnay still allowed to single-handedly maintain fundamental libraries for the ecosystem? Why is he part of Library API team? How is he not permabanned for single-handedly permanently damaging Rust by killing off comptime reflection over his racism? How is he not permabanned for the power play he attempted to pull with his "RFC" after pushing pre-compiled binary to serde without notice? Why are MIC companies routinely tolerated at Rust conventions? Why does no one talk about it, despite the problems not being solved? Has #Ruby takeover taught people nothing? Will Rust survive another year without turning into #fashtech?

So many questions. I think about them every time I use Rust, which is often.

@jrbe As far as we're concerned, the answer has and continues to be the same. Actually build a fucking community. Document your values and stand for them. Don't sit back and wait for people to contribute - actively reach them out first, learn how they can help, and accommodate their onboarding. Make space for people with diverse skills. It is a community-oriented project - so do community and activism, not the code. FOSS has long been dead in this regard, with every project just being 10 active nerds with 100 who ever submitted a PR while the usage is in tens of thousands being celebrated as some big success. No - each of those projects is a massive failure, even if the code solves some problems.

A couple months ago, ey managed to escape and move in with a partner abroad who seemed safe, but quickly turned abusive, and now ey're at the end of eir means, having to decide between two abusive households, homelessness or, hopefully, figure out a different place with safety. @davidrevoy I'm no artist, so I don't have the vocabulary to articulate my feelings and thoughts properly, but I really like the proportions and anatomy here! It is really visible that the character is an adult, because the hands, feet, and head are properly enlarged relative to the body size, and they don't look childish. It is very impressive and wholesome to see, considering how much art there is of just children or downscaled adults that is presented as "this character is an adult". I find your take on it very sweet 🩵

I hope to write about it in depth one day, but most of our present-day infrastructure has been built by people, structures and companies who can't be trusted with anything. They are the ones who'll gladly cooperate with fascists if they ever come to power. And coming to power fascists have been doing over the past years, so yeah. The entire tech field has been built in a way that is vulnerable to fascism. The days we had prior to that have been a historical accident, that is now successfully corrected away.

@jk The thing that gets me, is like... It's been 3 fucking years. Nevermind companies - it's a poorly kept secret that they are ran by clowns that won't even consider others until their bottom line absolutely tanks. But others? Like, there are so many projects that have went AI, and ALL of them were met with extreme backlash. So how are there new ones still going AI? How deep in the ass your head needs to be to not know that people literally fork projects over AI? Or is it arrogance and the feeling that others have done AI poorly and you'll do it good and no one will complain? Either way, there's something seriously wrong with project leaders who keep doing this.

And to be very blunt, I don't see dtolnay making strides towards being something other than a liability, waiting to explode the next time something happens.

Ultimately, it is a systematic problem: with how resources are allocated and how people are forced to work to not starve, the game is rigged. Still, though, not thinking of what your labor and effort is used for is a privilege - and a choice. There's a comparison made by someone during Framework fallout, and it was stuck with me since. It compared the excitement and energy many engineers display without thinking about the application to wanting to build the best possible trains in 1940s.

I am cautiously optimistic that had this situation not happened, we'd already have good and working comptime reflection today. And I profoundly disagree that the people were "well-intentioned", for most of them have kept their power and haven't contributed to the solution, only apologized instead of doing something with the elephant in the room.
