@mattgrayyes Fun fact about the kettle test: Back when I still worked on energy management systems I used a kettle as a dummy load all the time. I had a bunch of incandescent lights to do the 50w to 200w range and a kettle that did about 2kw for a moment on a good day. Used it to test charging stations, electricity meters and some smaller battery systems. (We did get a proper electronic load at some point.) The main problem with the kettle was that the noise kept summoning people that wanted some hot water to the lab. Folks kept drinking the coolant from my dummy load.

@concretedog@mastodon.social We designed a custom variant of the medel max at the local hackerspace back in 2014. It was built using 2020 extrusion.
We designed it such that we can scale up parts procurement and started offering "build a 3d printer" workshops. (4 days building a printer and 5th day for walking people through their first prints) We did about 10 printers at a time.
I got really good at extracting broken tabs at some point.

@argv_minus_one CPU cycles for TLS have been the limit on my setup. I mean it's a reasonably sized VM, and I don't want to pay more than 20€ per month to serve some static files. While I could turn off TLS, the next bottle neck is probably network bandwidth.
I have a fail2ban rule in place that just bans any IP that does more than ~100 requests per minute for a couple of weeks. I also straight up firewalled the entire IP range of the worst offenders (unless they appeared to be IPs used by ISPs for their customers).
Works fine so far. My sites can't be found via goggle anymore (or at least the newer pages won't show up), but their results are shit anyway.

Die Stadt #Kaiserslautern ist mal wieder an vorderster Front an der Digitalisierung im Neuland. Irgendwann in 2023 geschahen Zeichen und Wunder. Man konnte seine Meldebescheinigung auf einmal online mit dem ePerso beantragen. So muss sich die Zukunft anfühlen.
Wenn man Stand heute auf die Webseite des Bürgercenters geht, ist die Option unter Pass- und Meldewesen irgendwie weg.
Das ist jetzt extrem unpraktisch z.B. für Studierende, die sowas für ihren Bafög-Antrag brauchen und sich eventuell darauf verlassen haben, dass das jetzt schnell und unkompliziert online klickbar ist. Vorort-Termine im Bürgercenter sind oft auf Wochen im Voraus ausgebucht.
Da stellt sich nun die Frage: Haben die Nasen wirklich den Service abgeschaltet (läuft auf dem Server von einem Drittanbieter) oder nur den Link in ihrem CMS entfernt?

@mttaggart Something is off about that number... The energy mix in France means 1kWh produces around 39g of CO2e. (At least a couple of websites quoted that number.) That would mean 1MWh is 39kg CO2e. So 20400t / 0.039t = 523077 so 520GWh. That seems like a lot.
The model was trained on 3000 H200 GPUs according to some websites. Let's just assume they had 375 DGX H200 servers with 8 GPUs per server. According to the datasheet each server needs 10kW, 3750kW or 3.75MW total. Let's ignore cooling and auxillary equipment. Running those servers full tilt for a year would need only 32GWh. That's about 1.25kt CO2e.
Those numbers don't quite line up for me even if we add cooling and stuff. I'll take another look once I've slept a bunch of hours.

In DE gibt's da je nach Stromanbieter (der Netzbetreiber da eventuell auch was zu melden) verschiedene Varianten. Das sind im Endeffekt aber alles entsprechende gewerbliche Stromtarife.
Die einfachste Variante ist man bekommt einen Preis der an den Börsenpreis gekoppelt ist. Der Preis wird dann eher nicht negativ, aber einstellige Centbeträge pro kWh kommt vor. Dafür braucht man nicht viel Technik moderne Messeinrichtung + Zählerfernauslesung reichen. Kenne auch ein paar Firmen die sich wochends den billigen Strom in Batterien laden (> 500kWh) und damit dann die teuren Zeiträume unter der Woche überbrücken.
Variante zwei ist man bietet negative Regelleistung (aka Verbrauch) als Dienstleistung an. Dann muss dann halt richtig Strom verbrauchen (1MW und größer) damit man mitspielen darf. Z.B. Gießereien mit Induktions- oder Lichtbogenöfen die dann einfach auf Knopfdruck mehr Leistung abrufen können. Kommt dann aber mit Regulatorik. Man bekommt Fahrpläne oder sogar eine Fernwirkverbindung zum EVU das einem dann in Echtzeit sagt wie viel Leistung man ab zu rufen hat. Und man zahlt Strafen wenn man sich da nicht dran hält.

@javahippie@mainz.social Meine Perspektive ist da eine andere: An der Tür zum Flur vor meinem Büro steht was von "Competence Center High Perfomance Computing". Ich bekomme ganz oft die üblen Probleme auf den Schreibtisch, wo kein Standardansatz hilft und vor denen andere gute Entwickler schon kapituliert haben. Das sind Probleme, die auch noch niemand vorher hatte, weil es z.B. die Art Hardware noch nicht so lange gibt. Passiert auch regelmäßig, dass ich in einer Domäne lade, für die mir komplett das mental model fehlt.
Mein erster Schritt ist dann meistens erstmal das Problem mit all seinen verschiedenen Aspekten verstehen. Und das heißt bei mir ganz oft einfach mal hinsetzen und versuchen eine Lösung für irgendein Teilproblem zu implementieren. Schauen, wo es knirscht, wo man hängen bleibt. Was verhält sich anders als angenommen? Warum geht diese eine offensichtliche Lösung, die mir im Kopf rumspukt kaputt? Nur so bekomme ich eigentlich eine solide Intuition für die Umgebung und die Constraints unter denen man dort arbeiten muss.
Mag andere Leute die geben, die einfach mal alle Specs lesen und danach am Whiteboard die Lösung konstruieren, aber mein Gehirn braucht einfach diese Hands-On-Erfahrung um sich in sowas reinzufinden.
Aber wenn man mir diesen Hand-On-Teil wegnimmt, werde ich deutlich schlechter in meinem Job werden. Außerdem ist das der Teil, der mir Spaß macht.
Specs schreibe und Code reviewen mache ich, weil es dazu gehört aber das ist nicht der Teil von meinem Job, für den ich morgens aus dem Bett steige. Gerade Reviews finde ich super anstrengend, weil mein Kopf eher konstruktiv als analytisch funktioniert.
Dementsprechend bin ich gerade am überlegen, was ich in Zukunft machen will. Vielleicht nochmal zurück an die Uni und noch nen Master in E-Technik machen?

Große Erzeuger wie z.B. Solarfarmen werden abgeschaltet wenn das Netz instabil wird. Also rechtzeitig vorher damit es nicht soweit kommt. Wenn das im Rahmen von Redispatchmaßnahmen (https://www.bundesnetzagentur.de/DE/Fachthemen/ElektrizitaetundGas/Versorgungssicherheit/Netzengpassmanagement/Engpassmanagement/Redispatch/start.html) passiert, bekommen man als Betreiber der Erzeugeranlage auch eine Kompensation fürs Abschalten. Kleinere Anlage schalten ab weil die Netzfrequenz zu hoch ist, was passiert wenn man zu viel Erzeugung und zu wenig Verbrauch im Netz hat. Das ist halt genau dann wenn der Strom eh gerade billig ist, weil zu viel davon da ist.
Im Endeffekt also umgekehrt: Börsenpreis wird negativ weil Stromverbrauch gerade eine netzdienliche Dienstleistung ist. Und wenn sich nicht schnell genug Verbraucher finden, muss man die Erzeugung abschalten.
