I did my first steps with #Ansible 🎉

In the past I often played sysadmin on my raspberry pi but at some point i screw something up an just start again.

Now where I getting started with my Nuc based #homelab I want to use Ansible to keep my infrastructure as code even if I screw something up. Which is much more unlikely than 7 years ago.

Last week I installed Proxmox and now I feel save to play with Ansible in different VM Environments.

Have you some suggestion, tips or nice_to_knows for the beginning?

And yes I‘m a bit overcautious so i blurred my Homelab /24 ip addresses.

#selfhosted #devops

Today I almost made a bad #mistake. I wanted to delete all files from an automation user from an directory and I didn‘t payed enough attention to what I am typing. So I typed sudo rm /* instead of sudo rm ./* Because I didn‘t want to remove folders everything turned out well but it absolutely remembered me to use sudo, rm and * with patience and so I want to rember you too. Does anyone know if #Linux would let you do the sudo rm -rf /* command or is there a safety mechanism? Maybe I try it out later on a VM.

Moin @AlienJay@burningboard.net,

Do you sqash commits when you merge to main?

We always kept the full history but i think it is a bit messy for an overview how main changed. Especially if i want to know what changed between two MRs/PRs.

What are your arguments to do it like you do?

#development #git #python #java #javascript #go #rust

@Larvitz Does the language change based on the location? I just get the german page. Is there a fast way to change that?

@Larvitz Now that im able to see the page i can give some feedback. Right now i just saw the mobile page. On Firefox for ios First of all i want to say thank you for the work! I found 2 tiny point on the mobile version: The first one is the burningboard.net is to big for my screen :D that is also the case on the german page. The secon one is that the green field isn’t properly rendered at the initial load but it fixes itself when im scrolling. That is just on the english page. And also it messes a little up when i cange back to german. Added pictures for reference :) Is there a way to contribute/help or did i just filled your todo list ;)

@rtn@chaos.social Hi, thanks for asking. I really like w3schools.com, geeksforgeeks.org and realpython.com. Also I use LLMs as reference due to to the more precise but eventually wrong output. What do you use?

@graves501@fosstodon.org I don‘t want to hear, that my discipline is the problem🫠😂 But yes I spend not enough time an attention at the commit messages so they aren‘t as clear as they should. I want to learn that👍

@TalesFromTheArmchair@hachyderm.io Ahh interesting approach. I think it gets harder with many Developers. Have you experience with that?

@mhussard@mastodon.social First thing is to see what you want to do. Do you want to use Linux as Desktop replacement or as Server to host some nice Stuff? The key difference is if you always have a Display, mouse and keyboard connected or you use the pc „headless“ via ssh like a real Server. For the self hosting stuff i would use it as Server and connect via ssh from your Mac if you have one. What is your way?

@danielHL@norden.social That sounds hard. I hope the blast radius wasn‘t to big and you was able to rollback fast. And I know that you learned something through that incident. Have a nice rest of your Monday.
