An individual in Canada used ChatGPT for eight months to plan one of the country’s worst mass shootings. Yet, if you listen to politicians and media, the real threat of AI is a fantastical scenario where it might wipe out humans in ten years. They need to stop getting fooled by tech deceivers. https://disconnect.blog/the-media-has-the-ai-threat-all-wrong/ #tech #openai #samaltman #generativeai #artificialintelligence #cdnpoli #cdntech #canada

19/ #CognitiveOffloading vs learning, as in [A] "Other technologies have made particular skills obsolete in the past, notes Tapani Rinta-Kahila, an information-systems researcher at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. For example, GPS navigation systems have eroded people’s navigation skills. #GenerativeAI tools, however, are “the first technology that automates various #cognitive faculties around thinking and interpretation, which were long considered unique human skills”" [4]

13/ Blurred spectrum between two refusal ways to disclose #NegativeResults and the process towards obtaining any given "successful" solution

  • #generativeAI companies using these "opaque" solutions as advertising and with goals "severely misaligned" [3] vs. the goals of the #ScientificCommunity

  • #scientific/ #technical experts increasingly adopting an "opaque" process to deliver "successful" solutions, hiding (or simply being more and more unable to keep up with) even the more severe pitfalls

1/ Commentaries by @tao@mathstodon.xyz on #generativeAI use in #mathematics noting research mechanisms that may go beyond the specific field [A] https://mathstodon.xyz/@tao/117207849921390904 [B] https://mathstodon.xyz/@tao/117237320796901560 From [A]: the process of starting with one idea, "discovering the precise obstruction preventing it from working, adjusting the [idea] to (partially) eliminate that obstruction, and then iterating, would almost certainly reveal important new insights [...] that would not have been feasible to obtain by other means"

I wrote recently about how the collection of good, fruitful open problems is now being mined in a non-renewable fashion, leading to the potential scenario of these problems becoming scarce. This may seem unintuitive at first, since the set of possible problems one could ask is infinite. Perhaps the following analogy can help: a country or region can suffer a critical shortage of drinking water while simultaneously being surrounded by a massive ocean. One can easily generate any number of open problems in mathematics at will, such as working out the 10^10^10th digit of pi. But the vast majority of such problems are not worth focusing attention on: they show no particular propensity to reveal any further insights or connections to other questions, or may either be too easy or too impossible relative to known techniques to learn anything from the exercise. 3/ [A] also notes how now a scenario exists in which an autonomous #generativeAI "harness, backed by an enormous amount of computational resources, performs this entire iteration internally, and ends up producing the final ansatz [...] while the [ #genAI] company running the harness keeps the process to arrive at that ansatz almost completely out of public view. Technically, [a key problem ...] would now be solved; but there would be almost no value added to #mathematics as a consequence"

9/ As anecdotal evidence, after recent exchanges with somewhat exasperated colleagues (note: the fields I'm referring to here are not #mathematics, but mainly #ComputationalModelling, e.g. in #EarthSciences, #ecology, #ClimateChange, ... or just simply their #PeerReview !)

  • There seems to be a growing prevalence of those who claim that it is obsolete (usual "left-behind syndrome"?) to do scientific/technical work without depending more and more on #generativeAI (allegedly without upper limits)

But behind the scenes, it looks like products and services are going to get more expensive to please shareholders and he’s ready to sacrifice privacy on the altar of AI. https://disconnect.blog/red-flags-at-the-start-of-apples-john-ternus-era/ #tech #ai #apple #privacy #iphone #iphoneduo #generativeai #surveillance

"The intelligence report, circulated across the US military this spring in the midst of the war with Iran, immediately set off alarm bells: A Chinese ship in the Middle East was transporting components of a nuclear weapons program. The US military swung into action with plans to intercept the vessel, according to four sources familiar with the episode. According to two of the sources, armed members of the US military were preparing to board the ship. Military planes were in the air, one of those sources and another source familiar with the incident said. It was only just before the planned operation that officials dug deeper into the report put together by a special operations command analyst and found it had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) — and that a chatbot the analyst had used inaccurately identified the material the ship was carrying. CNN was not able to learn what the misidentified cargo was. The report, according to one of the sources, was “entirely false.” But it also “almost started a war,” the source said. Any US operation against a Chinese vessel could have risked spiraling into an armed conflict between the two nations. Across the US military and the intelligence community, officials are pushing to weave AI into nearly every facet of their work, from analyzing the huge volumes of raw intelligence the US collects and selecting targets for strikes, to more mundane applications like managing budgeting, logistics and supply chains." https://edition.cnn.com/2026/09/18/politics/us-military-ai-false-intelligence-china-ship #AI #AIHallucinations #Hallucinations #GenerativeAI #USA #Iran #China

🚀 Building Stoic — an AI Search & Answer Platform

Stoic is an AI-powered search and answer platform I’m building to turn documents, web content, images, and other information into useful, grounded answers. It uses RAG, embeddings, semantic search, and vector databases to retrieve relevant context before generating an answer. The backend is built with Python and FastAPI, with Supabase + pgvector for vector storage and similarity search. I’m also experimenting with LLM model routing, streaming responses, multimodal processing, and LLM-as-a-judge evaluation. The goal is to make AI search more reliable by focusing not only on generation, but also on retrieval quality and evaluation. I’m building Stoic as a hands-on learning project and continuously improving the architecture, performance, and user experience. If you're interested in AI engineering, RAG, LLMs, semantic search, or building AI products, I’d love to connect and hear your thoughts. 🤝

🔗 Application : https://badele.github.io/build-with-ai/🔗 Sources : https://github.com/badele/build-with-ai #OpenSource #AI #SoftwareEngineering #GenerativeAI #Badge #Generator #DevOps

"While Buckmaster and Alpöge were finalizing their own results, they learned that “information about our progress had been passed to OpenAI.” When they contacted OpenAI, they were told that OpenAI had already achieved a full proof of the central problem. But when they asked follow-up questions about when OpenAI had begun its research into the problem and how much human input was involved, the answers became more evasive. “It emerged that an entire team had been working on the problem,” Buckmaster said, “and that an insane amount of compute had been used…. Eventually, it was agreed that [the first prompt] had been sent in the past few days, after information about our work had reached OpenAI.” If true, that would suggest the OpenAI team had become convinced that Buckmaster and Alpöge’s approach was the right one, and decided to use its material advantage in computing resources to reach a formal proof first." https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/08/openai-fought-dirty-on-career-making-math-problem-says-nyu-mathematician/ #AI #GenerativeAI #LLMs #OpenAI #Astra #GPT #Math #Mathematics
