@ajh@indieweb.social Uh... underscoring the need for careful investigation when a person's liberty and good name are at stake.

@ajh@indieweb.social It's shocking how little actual evidence is required to strip a person of liberty. We see it over and over again, in this case the long and inept arm of the law reached across an international border to trash an innocent's life. Facial recognition and automatic license plate reader cases get a lot of press these days, but it's a enduring issue. POC suffer more than most groups, but nobody is immune.
Some goon could be builind a case against one of us right now

@georgetakei Those of us without a good picture of what Orban has done in Hungary can profit from a listen to today's On the Media mid-week podcast, in which Hungarian journalist Ivan Nagy, currently with Columbia Journalism Review, explains. Orban stands with Orban, not the Hungarian people, and Vance knows it. Vance wants to normalize Orban-style corruption where-ever he finds it. https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/articles/a-new-day-for-the-press-in-hungary

@bjn @johl The way a takedown works is that a claim is made, the takedown is implemented, and the target then has the opportunity to appeal. Generating the appeal takes target resources. Evaluating the appeal takes platform resources. I think that rarely ends with justice.

@spaf Imagine that you had surrounded yourself with people who competed with each other to fellate you, literally or figuratively. Imagine that all of those people transparently had much to gain from their association with you, many because they have no actual competence, others because they had businesses that, in a corrupt system, could only operate with a pass from you. With even a little self awareness, wouldn't an indelible self-loathing wash over you? More adulation would only exacerbate.

@mrose @oclsc @SteveBellovin The article - which is worth a read if you can climb that paywall - says that Ratcliffe, the head of the CIA, was at several key meetings. At one attended only by USA officials, he described Netanyahu's regime change scenarios as "farcical." Unless regime change was defined as simply killing the ayatollah, he expressed the judgment that it unlikely to be achievable. Trump was at that meeting. So - intelligence was represented, but did not hold sway.

From a January 1952 copy of True Story, a now-defunct women's magazine, this full-page The Little Woman comic harkens back to the day before seatbelts and airbags when not flying through the windshield in a collision required careful driving, unlike today.

@campuscodi The idea of Ask Jeeves was that it would accept natural language queries, which was expected to be easier for internet noobs to compose back when the whole idea of internet and internet search was new. In about 1999, the leadership of the academic CS department where I toiled directed me to create a knockoff site called AskHarlan that trolled our provost by accepting any input and always returning a variation of "no" because that provost was a hard sell. It didn't help.

@spaf What I don't get is that even a horrible person - defined, quite frankly, as one with values I don't share - cannot escape the evidence of their eyes. And when that evidence accumulates to the inescapable conclusion that you are surrounded by low-quality people who have no genuine respect for you and treat you like a credulous, blind fool - even a monster would want to step away. Fawning attention makes one's skin crawl, and lack of decency doesn't inoculate against that.

@briellebouquet@lgbtqia.space @cmconseils@mastodon.social My favorite lost glove shots are from when I happen across one of my partner's gloves - she is challenged to keep hold of her stuff - such as one I found on a Cleveland OH sidewalk that I only later learned was hers. I've even got one of my own glove, retrieved an hour after it fell our of a pocket at a bump in the road on a bike ride. I celebrate the universality of lost gloves, eyes open that some people can't afford them. Never found one on a roof, though.

@jerry As we all know, Trust and Safety is hard, and a challenge is that when it fails it hits some users far harder than others. The idea that it's unduly onerous on those users to block trolls is new to me - I'm not a domain expert. But I want to hear Black voices, so their problem is, to an extent, my problem. Could a mitigation be curated block lists? I have a foggy recollection of such a facility being available on a certain legacy microblogging platform.

@SteveBellovin Eyes open that you have given this more thought that I have, but: Do we want military leaders driving political decisions? How has that worked out when practiced elsewhere? It's a similar question to whether we want, say, real estate moguls with inherited wealth to misinterpret their exceptional privilege as evidence of competence in the areas of, say, politics, fiscal policy, environmental science, and law. Military people recognizing the limits of their expertise? Bravo.

@brian_gettler Not sure this is the case in Ontario, but in many jurisdictions the finances of a school are directly tied to attendance. You might think that a school would prioritize student achievement over the narrow interests of the organisation itself, but you'd only think that if you hadn't long lived in the world.

CBC's Stephen Quinn talks with former mayor Larry Campbell - currently Downtown Eastside advisor - for about 8min. Campbell says some stuff that surprises me, such as that decriminalization didn't work and, in the fentanyl era, cannot work, and that he agrees with Sim that building more supportive housing in the neighbourhood is a poor use of resources. #Vancouver #BCPol

@DrPsyBuffy@mstdn.social I've seen more posts complaining about complaints than actual complaints (though not many of either). Mostly I follow tech, news, and infosec. What the fediverse contains is directly related to whom you choose to follow - and to a lesser degree whom you choose to mute and block. That I've silenced but a handful - fewer than the fingers on one - is a testament to the civility I've encountered. My blocklist on the other site was surely in the high hundreds.

@petergleick Do you assert that an influenza vaccine, had one been available 100 years ago and required for USA WW1 soldiers, likely wouldn't have mitigated the death toll? If not, I don't see what your objection is. If so, I don't see why you would assert that it would not have mitigated. I think the point here - emphasizing the potential impact of an influenza outbreak on military readiness when the force is unvaccinated - is well worth making, and also well made here.

USA justice system is in freefall, and nobody knows where the bottom is.

Gloria Steinem was unarguably a feminist, but her vision was a gift to each and every one of us - in my opinion, literally no less to men than to women. That vision freed men to - for example - participate in family life more completely than was considered normal before her leadership showed us the way. In USA, we pay lip service to Liberty, but liberty isn't the right to behave exactly like everybody else - it's the right to make your own choices. And Steinem did more to make that possible for women and men alike than anybody else I can think of. We didn't deserve her.
