@caseyliss@mastodon.social Do they not have running water in the beach town you go to? Maybe my California is showing but it BLOWS MY FREAKING MIND that people buy those huge cases of plastic trash just to transport water from one place to another. (Not hating on you in particular, just using your example to illustrate what huge numbers of people do. Even worse is people buying CASES OF GLASS BOTTLES SHIPPED HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD for their drinking water). @atpfm@mastodon.social

@SwiftOnSecurity 8 years ago my wife asked me, while holding her phone, “hey how can I print this?” I was bowled over by the insanity of this question. Decades of print driver trauma, suffering through a PCL printer under Linux in the 90s. It all came flooding back. Frustrated, I replied “what? From your PHONE? I can’t even begin to imagine what it would take to get printer drivers on a——“ And before I could finish my thought, she interrupted “nevermind, I got it” and the printer started making happy printer noises. I WAS SHOOK Still am, TBH.

@marcoarment@mastodon.social I don’t think you’ll get any real disagreement, very few cyclists WANT to be on an MUP either. It’s the lesser of two evils, generally, and we all (pedestrians and cyclists) are happy to get any piece of infrastructure, even if it’s shared. The same way drivers don’t fully appreciate that this lightweight, precariously balanced two wheel contraption (that REQUIRES swerving to remain upright), cyclists on an MUP have to tolerate that two footed critters have a tendency to unpredictably change direction without looking first to see if anything is hurtling towards them. I use a bell on my bike because the range is better than my voice (and nobody responds well to a deep male voice shouting “ON YOUR LEFT” at them), but frankly it’s typically safer to let the buzzing tires and freewheel indicate my presence. An unfortunately common reaction to a cyclist’s bell is for the pedestrian to look over their left shoulder and step directly into the cyclist’s path 🤦 @atpfm@mastodon.social

@yury_mol@mastodon.social @trieut@mstdn.social I humbly propose this thought: If you find yourself believing that an entire class of humans are (almost) universally doing or thinking something wrong, it is far more likely that it’s a case of something you are missing or unaware of. Of course there are definitely instances of groupthink where this doesn’t hold up, but it’s worth keeping in mind as a starting point at least. @atpfm@mastodon.social

@arichtman@eigenmagic.net 100%. It’s amazing when there’s a simple solution to an annoying problem and yet somehow the solution is so infuriating you wish it didn’t exist and you couldn’t back to a world where you were merely frustrated 😂 @marcoarment@mastodon.social

@atpfm@mastodon.social a few additional random watch thoughts for @marcoarment@mastodon.social

  • totally correct that Garmin/suunto/etc are terrible smartwatches
  • I think he oversells the “everyone has an Apple Watch charger” thing. Yeah they’re more common but still weird and obscure and uncommon. Just less so than others.
  • Garmin has a uniquely weird navigation/ui but it makes so much sense when you’re used to it and they’ve been doing it so long that it’s kind of their own language.
  • Garmin in particular have their own ecosystem- if you think using an Apple Watch for running activities is bad, imagine using it for serious cycling. A lot of Garmin people will have a Garmin watch and also a Garmin bike computer, and there’s a lot of synergy in the app there. And they have features Apple won’t touch.

Because I hate myself I use Apple phones and computers, a Garmin watch, and a Wahoo bike computer. 😂

@dxzdb@mastodon.social yeah those signs rarely specify fuel units or currency units. Even where the 9/10 is static you could do 10.1 and 9/10ths of a dime 😂 @benaar@mastodon.social

@PlaneSailingGames@chirp.enworld.org related, on iOS, I don’t think I’ve ever seen my phone _not_ “syncing paused to save battery”. So frustrating. Typical is to come home from taking pictures somewhere, and Mac is not up to date. Take out iPhone with 80% battery, on my home WiFi. Syncing paused.. 🤦‍♂️

Is there some foolproof way of changing focus modes from the lock screen?
If I wake up before my alarm goes off and I wish to take my phone off of sleep mode, it takes at least 5 tries to get it right. I use some combination of tapping, pressing, force pressing, and long pressing. Inevitably my phone takes me through lock screen editing a couple times on the way to trying to disable Sleep.

@whophd@ioc.exchange Agreed on the taste of soda in glass vs plastic. Soda in plastic bottles is the worst taste of all possible options. When I do have to buy a bottle of water, I’m fairly agnostic on material. Those aluminum bottles are pretty decent and reusable but I’m not convinced they’re particularly recyclable with the plastic tamper rings they mold into them. I reuse the plastic ones a bit, but they’re pretty crappy. I’ve generally avoided the glass ones, probably due to availability and price, but they’re certainly more pleasant to use and reuse for a few days. (Weight aside). @caseyliss@mastodon.social

@caseyliss@mastodon.social I’m thinking of the Voss/San Pelligrino/Perrier/Evian/Fiji you see on shelves. Whether people drink this daily or merely treat themselves to such a fancy delight on occasion, I thankfully cannot speak to. But they must have some nonzero level of sales to justify their presence in American stores!

@vwdasher@weird.autos It’s a ton of fun but it’s more of a motor in search of a chassis. Over time I grew tired of the crashy ride. Loved having a tiny runabout but we had too many cars and not enough space.
