@atpfm@mastodon.social Finally got around to listening to @Phonograph@mastodon.social What a joyful 45 minutes. Hadn’t heard Mark Bramhill’s name in a while. Welcome to Macintosh still gets queued up once a year or so for road trips or long flights. My only complaint was that I had forgotten that Tigger = Tootsie Pop Owl, and that led to a wiki rabbit hole. (Didja know he also patented the artificial heart?)

@rconti@c.im @marcoarment@mastodon.social @atpfm@mastodon.social The Observer in stainless steel was a common gift to oneself in the late ‘80s Army when you got promoted from 1LT to CPT. Cool feature was tracking ski runs. Mine finally died just last year.

@atpfm@mastodon.social so instead of a $200 Chromebook, schools are buying the $500 Lenovo Yoga4. And there is no comparison between that device and the MacBook Neo. Additionally, school ITs are not encouraging, per se, but they are making it easier for students to bring their own devices. Hot swapping because you left yours at home isn’t an issue: you just get a crappy Lenova for the day. But your MacBook can get into all of the school stuff relatively quickly

@atpfm@mastodon.social using “the mainland“ is a minor flex that you are aware of Hawaiian culture. Similar to the use of Mahalo in Southern California. Or the occasional use by New Zealanders of “the West Island“ to refer to Australia

@sjsmac@mastodon.social @mathowie@xoxo.zone That was rude. No one claimed this was a double-blind peer reviewed experiment. It’s just an observation presented from a particular vantage point. I think it was obvious to all that price point, advertising, and production rates were omitted. Doesn’t make the toot less interesting.
In other words, lighten up, Francis.

@atpfm@mastodon.social @gruber@mastodon.social I’ve been out of the loop, so apologies if you already saw this: https://overcast.fm/+AAIPPfpdm2k Desert Island Discs Sir Tim Berners-Lee is a computer scientist and the inventor of the World Wide Web. He was born in 1955, a golden year for technology innovators. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were also born in the same year

@atpfm@mastodon.social The Mainland: I am in the middle of my seventh decade, and as an army brat, I have “lived“ in 22 states (four years in New York ) and visited all the rest. My guess is that since the time when Jon left, and before the time Marco moved there, mainland became popular ironically. Because the Hawaiian definition is the only accurate one. The continental US is the mainland if you live in the Pacific, and it is the lower 48 if you live in Alaska

@fds@mastodon.social @kmgrant@mastodon.social @BasicAppleGuy@mastodon.social Not completely true. Computer prices have been going down forever. Wheat is where it was in the 1970s. Inflation is not a real, physical, organic thing, but the result of many interconnected factors. Cars are a great example. Every twenty years, the product is completely different, but we keep calling them cars. But how do you compare prices when one had hand-crank windows and the other is a mobile WiFi hot spot?
