mastodon 4.6.9I host the longest running #Apple centric podcast called the NosillaCast. I also co-host Programming by Stealth with @bart@social.bartificer.ie. Married to @spsheridan@chaos.social. I walk miles and miles for exercise. I care deeply about #Accessibility.

Years ago I was walking Tesla in my neighborhood and met a lovely woman named Tilde who was tending her garden. Whenever possible I stopped by to chat with her. I was sad to learn from her daughter that she passed away during COVID. Her daughter explained the house was sold and asked me if we wanted some bulbs of her gorgeous pink flowers. @spsheridan@chaos.social planted them in our front yard and now we get to think of Tilde every year when the bulbs pop up and bloom. I'm a big fan (and member) of @atpfm@mastodon.social. They just did a member’s special where @siracusa@mastodon.social, @caseyliss@mastodon.social, and @marcoarment@mastodon.social share development “nuggets of wisdom” from there shared years as programmers. There were tiny nuggets as well as broad ways of looking at development. I thought it was terrific. You can be a member for just one month for $8 to get this episode from April 14. I think it’s worth it!
This may be my favorite XKCD of all time. Use the dropdown menu…
We’ve got your “rah rah go to Macstock”, we’ve got hearing aids and a less expensive display from ViewSonic, we have a little @jasonhowell@mastodon.social, and we round it all out with Security Bits with @bart@social.bartificer.ie. Fun for the whole family.
We’ve got another great article by @eddietonkoi@mastodon.social — this time on producing an audiobook. He takes us through the process, explaining each step where he can and confessing when he doesn’t know what a complex control does. Even if you don’t ever plan to record an audiobook, his process is still fascinating. I was especially intrigued by one tricky thing he does in not erasing flubs but rather silencing them, and why.

Why does “Dodger" have a d in the middle but “Roger" doesn’t? It's hard for me to write “roger dodger!”
As we all watch the Orion crew make their incredible journey to the Moon, I couldn’t help thinking back to CES 2018 when @spsheridan@chaos.social had the incredible opportunity to interview NASA engineer Jared Daum. While the launch timeline might have been a bit optimistic, hearing him explain how Orion’s parachutes will guide the crew safely to splashdown is still a fascinating reminder of just how much brilliance goes into spaceflight.

You can have self-control and wait till Sunday to listen, but the NosillaCast is out four days early thanks to @eddietonkoi@mastodon.social, @spsheridan@chaos.social, and @bart@social.bartificer.ie!
@scottwillsey@social.lol sent in a fabulous review of the dictation app Wispr Flow. I'm wild about it too, so I added my two cents at the end of his post (hope you don't mind, Scott!)

Recorded and assembled from my hospital bed, with help from @eddietonkoi@mastodon.social @spsheridan@chaos.social, and @bart@social.bartificer.ie, we bring you the NosillaCast without interruption!
In this very fun installment of Programming By Stealth, @bart@social.bartificer.ie teaches us how to use CSS “variables”, which aren't actually variables (they're custom properties). These non-variables allow you to take advantage of Bootstrap to style web pages, but make the look and feel all your own. Bart outdid himself on the shownotes, the examples, and the challenge looks super fun.
Watching @ttscoff@hachyderm.io explain Mastodon at Macstock Expo outside of Chicago. He is, of course, rocking the topic.
I'm off galavanting with the grandchildren, but thanks to Eddie Tonkoi teaching us about static site generator Hugo, and @bart@social.bartificer.ie explaining to me how he approaches AI from a privacy-first perspective, we've still got a great show.
We've got a brand new Elgato Stream Deck+ that takes 7 seconds to wake up after the Mac wakes up. We've swapped cables, moved the USB-C from a dock to direct into the Mac Studio, we've tried it on a different Mac, and we've uninstalled and reinstalled the Stream Deck app, but it's still 7 seconds. Looks like Elgato is going to give us a warranty repair, but do you have any other ideas on a way to fix this?
Want another chance to tear up over how important it was that we sent astronauts to the moon? Well, here you go.
I didn’t know you hadn’t been hearing the cha-ching jingle before I asked for donations! Mystery solved on why. We’ve got three great CES interviews and then Security Bits with @bart@social.bartificer.ie
I couldn’t wait to hear the second half of Programming By Stealth Tidbit 17 with Helma van der Linden teaching @bart@social.bartificer.ie about #Docker, so I published it today. Helma takes things up a notch and teaches how to reuse the Docker image. Both audio files are available at the post now, but of course, you should subscribe to PBS in your podcatcher of choice
https://pbs.bartificer.net/tidbit17#reusing-the-docker-image
This episode of #ProgrammingByStealth is a Tidbit written/taught by Helma van der Linden. @bart@social.bartificer.ie wanted to understand Docker better, and Helma has some great use cases for how to use it for developer setups, so it was a good opportunity for Bart to learn from Helma.
The material is quite long, so the podcast was recorded in 2 segments, Tidbit 17a and b. Tidbit b will be along shortly, and picks up at the heading entitled "Reusing the Docker image".
Want to know what mayhem the bad actors have been about for the last fortnight? Find @bart@social.bartificer.ie’s fabulous Security Bits shownotes here:
@bart@social.bartificer.ie brings us this fortnight’s security news. We also introduced a new segment called Listener Questions, thanks to Ed Tobias. This means you, too, can submit questions either to me at allison@podfeet.com or through the Podfeet Slack.
In this instalment of Programming By Stealth, @bart@social.bartificer.ie walks through how he used the tools he taught in “Programmed by Stealth” to migrate the Let’s Talk website from WordPress to GitHub Pages. Most things worked well, but there were still some surprises.
In Security Bits this week, @bart@social.bartificer.ie does a deep dive into understanding the kerfuffle about Microsoft’s BitLocker Key (there’s no there there). Another nothing burger we briefly discuss is this whole Moltbot nonsense, where people are convinced we now have Skynet.
@bart@social.bartificer.ie has Security Bits for you with two Deep Dives: a bad month for Bluetooth with the WhisperPair vulnerability, and he explains the risks from dodgy Android devices because of the Kimwolf Botnet.
In this installment of Programming By Stealth, @bart@social.bartificer.ie explains the history of how Podfeet.com has evolved over the last 20 years, from shared hosting to dedicated web and database servers, and the evolution from Apache as my web server to NGINX + PHP-FPM. Of course I knew a lot of this, but the PHP-FPM part was a complete mystery!
What a striking image. I think @ltpod@social.bartificer.ie would be interested in the technique of keeping the viewfinder in black and white. https://pixelfed.de/p/Vulpy/868121007280175202
We'll have a solo Security Bits from @bart@social.bartificer.ie on this week's show — here's his shownotes if you want the sneak peek with all the links:
A few days early so I can publish the NosillaCast tomorrow - we bring you this week’s Security Bits by @bart@social.bartificer.ie:

It includes a good discussion about how the FCC is stopping new routers that aren’t made in the US. Not quite as much of a hair-on-fire situation as some might have led you to believe.
