I've written an answer to @https://mastodon.social/@andreagrandi@mastodon.social 's blog post where he outlines why he won't be syncing back to OpenStreetMap. I find this quite sad, you can read why here: https://pietervdvn.me/2026/08/04/response-to-why-book-corners-wont-sync-contributions-back-to-openstreetmap/

The yearly overview of made reviews is long overdue, so time for an update.

First of all, there are nearly 4700 reviews in https://mangrove.reviews nowadays; generated by around 33 pieces of client software:

ClientCountTotal (33 categories)4695mapcomplete.org (*)1746mangrove.reviews1188Unknown/not reported688localhost417toggenburg.swiss287thurgau-bodensee.ch92ostschweiz.ch77heidiland.com45wengen.swiss27open-reviews.net21Other (23)107

(*) The mapcomlete.org domain also includes other domains, e.g. dev.mapcomplete.org and the local-host testing URL

By theme

Of course, I’m mainly interested in the reviews by MapComplete. With what theme were they created?

Map ThemeCountTotal (36 categories)1728https://mapcomplete.org/food664https://mapcomplete.org/shops232https://mapcomplete.org/cafes_and_pubs224https://mapcomplete.org/playgrounds77https://mapcomplete.org/toilets72https://mapcomplete.org/cyclofix62https://mapcomplete.org/hotels51https://mapcomplete.org/pets47https://mapcomplete.org/climbing36https://mapcomplete.org/campersite34Other (26)229

In line with the analysis of last year, food, shops and pubs are the biggest three. Playgrounds stays on fourth place. However, toilets has rissen to the 5th place. Hotels – a relatively new theme – has been of to a good start as well.

By geography

Just like last year, most of the reviews are in Europe. However, reviews have also appeared in Africa, Japan and Iceland:

In Europe, Flanders is the most active region. This bias is ’cause MapComplete is developed there and somewhat well-known in Flemish area. At the same time, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, … have gotten somewhat dense as well.

For those who’d like to get the data I used for this analysis as geojson, you can download this here

Today I realized... The logo of Claude looking like a butthole is very appropriate, as a lot of shit comes out of it.

For research, I'd like to know about experiences where people has their phone searched or requested by police.

How did this go? What did they do? Did they ask you to voluntarily give your phone? Did you pre-wipe your phone? Did you also give your SIM-card? Did you try to find out if malware was installed afterwards? If so, how? Did you lookup relevant laws? Did they have a warrant?

@bradr@infosec.exchange Great news, but this is _only_ aboute electricity production. Is there a graph with _all_ energy and fossil use? I.e. including motor traffic (which still runs on oil), heavy industries and chemical processes?

Congrats! A few questions:

  • You were blocked by github? How? Why?
  • How do you handle logins on Forgejo? I had spam issues until I disabled all registration options, except "login with OpenStreetMap"?
  • Would you mind if I setup a mirror of MapComplete on your server?
