@ElenLeFoll@fediscience.org In my current thinking, there are two core problems: (a) temporal discounting: Individuals can have short term benefits, but the long-term consequences will aggravate dramatically (both collectively, e.g. environmentally and dependency on big tech; and individually, e.g. the cognitive debt) (b) a connected social dilemma: Individual benefits (e.g. faster writing of grants) leads collectively to a collapse of the system. Solution? No idea. Typical solution in social dilemmas are "institutional control" or „peer punishment“.

Added a 10 Terabyte seeding node to the #SciOp #SafeguardingResearch swarm; focusing on large (> 1 TB) data sets with 0 or 1 seeders.

„When you optimise a step that is not the bottleneck, you don't get a faster system. You get a more broken one.“

Great blog post on the „efficiency" of #vibeCoding software: https://andrewmurphy.io/blog/if-you-thought-the-speed-of-writing-code-was-your-problem-you-have-bigger-problems

So much talking about #digitalSovereignty.

Sustainable sovereignty does not come from switching from a US techbro corporation to a closed European alternative. Proper #decentralization, like the fediverse, is a good step.

But real sovereignty comes from rethinking and questioning the very foundations of our IT infrastructure, with its central servers, IP addresses, or TCP/IP protocols.

#Reticulum is such an approach to think one step further, implementing uncentralizability and real resilience, where individuals stay in control of their identities by cryptographic proofs built into the protocol itself.

I appreciate that developers like Mark think deeply about such things. Read the philosophical essay “Zen of Reticulum“:

:crt_w_green_lines: Hackathon: Data Under Threat / Data Rescueing (Aug 7) in #München

The LMU Open Science Center (@lmu_osc@scicomm.xyz) runs a hackathon to support the #SciOp #SafeguardingResearch initiative: Rescuing research data that is deleted by the Trump administration.

Bonus: @lavaeolus@fedihum.org will give an ignition talk!

📅 Thursday, 2025-08-07, 16 – 19 (only in-person)
👉 Details and signup: https://github.com/lmu-osc/safeguar.de-hackathon

Become a data rescuer by turning your own laptop into a Research Data Rescue Node, scraping at-risk data sets, and breathing new life into your old HDD as part of a global, decentralised network.

The journal Psychological Science totally revamped their review and decision criteria towards good scientific practice (instead of novelty and significance).

E.g., the reviewer instructions say:

"Please do not assume that findings from studies that are not preregistered were the result of a detailed a priori plan - that would be unfair to authors who allow us to see their plans by preregistering them. [...] We do not want to create a situation where authors who preregister have their submissions evaluated more harshly than authors who do not preregister.“

Hear hear!

I consider them (now) to be a real top journal in the field (in the actual, quality-oriented sense; not in the crooked marketing speech JIF sense).

In the #RESQUE evaluation scheme („Research Quality Evaluation scheme for psychological research“), there is an indicator for publications: “Correctness of computational results has been independently verified“.

https://www.resque.info

With CODECHECK, you can request and upload a verification certificate. This gives you "extra points“ in our evaluation scheme, as this is a real quality criterion.

https://epetitionen.bundestag.de/petitionen/_2026/_03/_22/Petition_196912.html

Hat schon einen steilen Verlauf, aber wir brauchen noch mehr Stimmen!
Bitte unterzeichnet auch. 🙏

🧮 How can we measure #researchQuality in #psychology?

The #DORA declaration tells us what *not* to do. But what to do instead?

A working group (commissioned by the German Psychological Society & in the spirit of #CoARA) now proposed a way to practically measure research quality in hiring & promotion, w/o resorting to JIF or h-index.

@olibrendel The feasibility of preregistration differs by field and topic, for sure. At least in psychology, there is a broad consensus that deviations from preregistration are not necessarily a down-side of a paper. They are actually quite common and there often are good reasons to deviate. But the deviations need to be transparently reported. Readers then can make a judgment and evaluate the strength of evidence / risk of bias. (in contrast to non-prereg without disclosure of deviations, where everything looks „perfect“).

Theory development and formalization is a new hot topic in psychology's reform movement.

We apply the #FAIR criteria to scientific theories. The increased accessibility and transparency of a #fairtheory promises faster scientific progress.

@ingorohlfing I see three situations here: (a) Researchers who are transparent and preregister get a more critical review (because deviations are found etc.) (b) Prereg / non-prereg get the same level of criticism (c) Non-prereg gets a more critical review, because of undisclosed flexibility and higher risk of bias. I read the current review guidelines primarily as „we want to avoid (a)“, and I fully agree to that. Beyond, I lean towards (c) *if* a preregistration would have been feasible. A prereg mitigates risk of bias; if that tool of mitigation is not present/not possible, I expect other measures of ensuring trust.

New large scale registered replication project probing Construal-Level Theory.
It shows the typical pattern: Hundreds of published studies (with positive effects), but virtually no replication attempts. Metaanalytic bias correction suggests true effect close to zero.

The preregistered replication:

* N = 11,775 from 27 countries and regions; 99.995% power for g = 0.23
* direct and paradigmatic replications

Results (positive effects are consistent with hypotheses):

* temporal, d = 0.08, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.003, 0.16] (effect in original study: d = 0.92);
* spatial, d = 0.04, 95% CI = [−0.03, 0.11] (effect in original study: d = 0.55);
* social, d = −0.27, 95% CI = [−0.34, −0.19]; and
* likelihood, d = 0.03, 95% CI = [−0.05, 0.11].

"These findings provide limited evidence for the predictions of the theory and present a critical challenge for CLT.“

Lessons learned today: `renv` does not work if you use it on a mapped network drive on Windows. (apparently problems with symlinks). After `restore()` it throws an error about:

`Error in .make_numeric_version(x, strict, .standard_regexps()$valid_package_version, : invalid non-character version specification 'x' (type: logical)`

Currently investigating potential solutions …
