Safeguarding Research/Culture
"As researchers, we often say 'we need the data'.
Today, the data needs us." — Kathy Reid (@KathyReid@aus.social)
[removed sentence, pending a rewrite]
Together, we can ensure that our cultural, intellectual and scientific heritage exists in multiple copies, in multiple places, and that no single entity or group of entities can make it all disappear.
We will be closing our Discourse forum (https://forum.safeguar.de) in a couple of days (July 20, 2026). We are currently working to set up a new platform for community engagement. Once it goes live, we will make an announcement here and on the SciOp blog (https://blog.sciop.net)
In the meantime:
- You can still report endangered data by creating datasets on SciOp - https://sciop.net/docs/quickstart/#report-endangered-data
- You can still reach out to us via email or Mastodon - https://safeguar.de/connect-with-us

A group dealing with at-risk educational materials is looking for help:
"The Digital Public Goods Library is looking for librarian volunteers who have experience cataloging materials with education-related metadata in a digital library environment, to assist in identifying and making available public domain and openly licensed educational materials that are either at-risk or have lost their digital home."
Data comes in many forms, but not every time there is a dataset ready to be saved:
We, together with @datarescueproject.org and partners need YOUR help in preserving American history – but this time, we need you to put on your ranger hat and boots, and trek to your local national park to #SaveOurSigns

I gather your original question has https://www.hostsharing.net/ in mind?
@404mediaco@mastodon.social reports on #SaveOurSigns:
https://www.404media.co/save-our-signs-national-parks-archive-qr-codes/
Quoting Jenny McBurney, whose work has been invaluable for this effort:
"There has been SO much work over the last 30 years to widen the lens and nuance the interpretations that are shared in the national parks. This effort threatens all that by introducing a process to cull signs and messaging in a way that is not transparent."
