@Setok@attractive.space GEOS for the C64 and Apple II was a GUI for 1 MHz 6502 machines back in the day – without slop coding... Apple's IIgs had an even more advanced GUI using a 65816 CPU running at 2.8 MHz.

There's a new PDP11 extension card for Apple II computers based on the J-11 and a Tang Nano FPGA board. Whow.

I would usually not post news about royalty as I couldn’t care less. However, in the two years I lived in Norway, I had the impression that King Harald was loved by the Norwegians and was one of the few down to earth royals. I remember an old photo showing him riding the Oslo subway with ski. All the trouble with the son (from a previous marriage) of his daughter-in-law seemed to be a strange disruption there.
King Harald passed away this morning at the age of 89. RIP.

@bigmike@ruhr.social Not exactly what you want, but it should be possible to run the Einstein Newton emulator on recent phones with acceptable performance. I could imagine that it’s feasible to also run it on a minimal Linux kernel + userland configuration.
https://github.com/pguyot/einstein
The NewtonOS source code was never published (and hasn’t leaked as far as I know), so a direct port is currently not possible without putting a lot of effort into decompiling the code.

@CyReVolt@mastodon.social That would make sense, but instruction decoding seems to use a PLA in the RISC-I instead of a net of combinational logic gates (see p. 6 of [1]). Using redundant opcode encodings would then not result in a reduction of chips space, I think.

I think I have some other PCBs on my list that I wanted (though I have too many hardware projects lined up already...), so it might be a good time to send another order to JLCPCB... but that has to wait until my vacation is over (in early September), JLCPCB is simply too fast...

@CyReVolt@mastodon.social NTNU had about 4,000 applications for 600 places each year (over all programmes in CS/CE) when I was working there, so they definitely had to filter. They can certainly still fill all seats right now, but you no longer need to be absolute top-notch to get in.

Admission requirements for the five-year integrated Computer Engineering degree programme at NTNU in Trondheim are being lowered for the fourth year in a row. Apparently, the uncertainty due to the AI craze is dampening young people's interest in the CE programme.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @shac@ioc.exchange Now that's an interesting discussion – do you see compartmentalisation within a monolithic kernel as an alternative to building (more efficient) multi-server, microkernel-based systems or do you rather think of it as an orthogonal approach?

@hanshuebner@mastodon.social I think @brouhaha@mastodon.social had the right idea.
The SystemVerilog source file included mentions a "DCJ11 TangNano interface by nanja.info [...] PSRAM interface module [...] 4MB RAM" in ram.sv.
The top.sv module is connected to:
DAL<21:0>, BS<1:0>, AIO<3:0> (J11 side, data/addresses multiplexed)
and
Apple II Data D<7:0>, Apple II /IOSEL, Apple II R/W
plus the PSRAM.
There also seems to be peripheral emulation (or addr. decoding) for a DLART and a PC11.
Now where do I find a J11 module? 😀

I'm investigating the original Berkeley RISC-I CPU out of historical interest and wonder why some instructions use more than one opcode (e.g. LDHI uses 16 opcodes 0x70...0x7F). I can't see why this is necessary – is this an optimization or am I missing something here?
Details seems to be provided in Corcoran, G.T., "Using ISPS to Specify the RISC I Architecture and Implementation," Master's Report, UCB (Dec. 1980), but I can't find this online.
