@sharpcheddargoblin@reclusive.blog It's not a given, but yes, the risk is quite high. Tech is generally not political, and there are open models that can do things like code analyzing with "somewhat ok" resource use. But I sadly do not think that is what GrapheneOS is talking about. To compare with git, using git for your project does not need to mean you support bad people, but the moment you pay money to github, you do. And it does not really matter if AI is used to produce code or not, what matters in this setting is the cost, and who gets the money. The cost of this must be taken from donations. The best bet is that this money ends up with Microsoft, with Anthropic and OpenAI as "close contenders". Graphene could be open about this. What LLMs are used? What is the cost and who gets our donations? Already, it is sad to see GrapheneOS be on Github, especially if it involves any financial cost, but I understand it is hard to leave. But to pay for their LLMs is highly unethical. @GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social @aphedges@hachyderm.io @paulshryock@phpc.social

@schrotthaufen@mastodon.social If everything is inherently political then why make a point of it with AI? Tech just "is", but the moment we start using and paying for it so it benefits someone for it, it becomes political, as with everything else. The issue with AI now is of course that most every players use it unethically. If Graphene decides to be one of the few that doesn't, it would benefit them if they clarified it. Until they do, I assume the money goes to bad players. Telling a queer person that is drowned in tech at work that knows that what is pushed is making a huge profit to those that wants people like me dead, as "unreflected and privileged" seems unreflected. I want to route money away from the shitty evil as fast as possible. I am pulling my support to Graphene until I know more. This seem unreflected to you? @ricardoharvin@mstdn.social @sharpcheddargoblin@reclusive.blog @GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social @aphedges@hachyderm.io @paulshryock@phpc.social

@evacide@hachyderm.io Why do bars that cater to a demographics that has been targeted by violence, opt to use a system that sells the safety promise a solution "That Protects Your Whole Community". Not too hard to guess why they use this. No, it isn't the right solution, but non-tech-savory straight people fall for this all the time, I am not sure why we should assume that non-tech-savory gay people would not. As with age verification laws, it is a bit... no... very scary... to see EFF being the ones pointing out how this will affect the queer communities, while our own organizations are mostly silent about it. But it is a tech reality that most people do not know quite how to relate to. We obviously have a job to do.

@adhd_coffee@mastodon.social ADHD is a made up term. You don't have ADHD. You have 100 energetic squirrels storing thoughtnuts at random locations and getting into panic more when they cannot locate the correct one, often resulting in very nigh noise level and a 100 squirrels fighting for your attention at the same time. Meds reduce the amount of squirrels and calm them down a bit. The made up bit is the "attention deficit" - there is no deficit. There just is so many squirrels that require your attention, you might seem a tad distracted.

@MsDropbear42@infosec.space On that topic, I get a bit confused / frustrated by the "pick a linux that looks like windows to make it easier..." when people seem to be quite ok using cellphones that are nothing like window. The standard ubuntu setup, with large, easy to spot icons laid out as they are on cellphone appears much easier to use than the odd "windows menu", even for a windows user. People swap to MacOS without much issues, and this has quite a different layout, but when "linux" is mentioned, it is tricky and should be "as much as windows as possible" for some odd reason. I do wish they had standardized software install a bit more. :O but stuff for most "standard users" are easy on any distribution.

The fact that it is so common here shows that it works well, we use water to carry heat, a great way to heat in winter. No dust burning, no risk of fire if covered, etc @jcrabapple@dmv.community

Being a rather anti #soccer bird, the Trump initiated wold cup soccer drama was a bit of a fun bit to wake up to. One would think having FIFA award Trump the "FIFA Peace Price", a price created with the sole to stroke Trumps ego, would be hard to top, but as this didn't really affect football directly, it didn't seem to create too much stir.

Trump telling FIFA president Infantino to correct the "grave injustice" it was to give a US player a one match suspension after a red card in the previous match. And, of course, Infantino does.

I guess Infantino is scared shit of what #Trump may do, should he not do "the masters bidding" (yah, duh, but you gave him the WC!), but this did not land well with other teams. Should the US now beat Belgium (something I hope they do, so this drama can shake up a bit more), it will be very hard for Belgium to accept this loss. As it should.

However far the US may go after this will be hard to view as a fair win.

Trump's ego makes it hard to keep corruption under a lid.

@fivetonsflax@tilde.zone Yah I was gonna say! I was 51 y.o when I started my ADHD meds. They did the complete opposite of ruining my life. Would not have gotten this far without coping mechanisms. But my tip would be to avoid doing ritalin as a "starter med" if you can, and try aduvanz first (or meds with similar active ingredient) - ritalin is a bit more "up and down" and can be a bit less optimal to start on for us adults. "High functioning" comes at such a cost. I felt like I was hitting a wall, and had no other options than to try to get a diagnosis to see if meds would help... As you saw, getting a diagnosis is so dang hard in this age, I could forget about public sector, and paid 6.000 euro for all the private psycologist / psyciatrists that was needed, and somehow that feels like the best investment I have ever done... But dang that is a privilege that is f...ing unfair to those that cannot. @tbortels@infosec.exchange @digitalcortex@mastodon.social

@threeofswords@godforsaken.website trans women in sports really is the key "anti-trans" argument, and I sadly believe it is one that can never be won, as the "unfair advantage" idea is so deeply rooted. It is the fallback argument when they are cornered and they realize that they don't really have any other valid thing to point to than "unfair advantage". As is what happened during my latest locker room argument with a person that was "seriously concerned about the woke politics of Kamala Harris" (as if Kamala is anywhere near woke...) "You saw what happened with that boxer! This is what happens when we.." She's not trans... The dude was a bit at a loss when asked why he bring a cis woman into the argument about why trans in sports is wrong. "I.. thought she was trans..." But I would not have been able to get anywhere, had they pointed to a trans athlete winning something. They want cis women who "do not meet women criterias" excluded, this battle feels lost :/

Reading about the #Greenparty in the UK, and having read some about the Green party in Germany, and seeing how the Green Party in Norway position themselves, it is important to remember that, while these parties may share some common ground, the name and this common ground does not make them the same.

I mean, we are already there with the Labor parties, so it isn't all that surprising.

Without digging too much, it feels like the UK has the best of the "Green" parties. In Norway, I feel we should vote more to the left, to be truly green.

@Tutanota@mastodon.social To give Google the "killed the internet" title is shifting responsibility away from the biggest blow against the internet, and the company behind the destruction of the net. Google isn't killing the net with their AI search. The net was already dead. This is something you notice exceptionally well when you shut the door on Meta and their services. I cannot find opening hours for several things, I miss all sorta event information, I am locked out of most any community information. Google isn't killing the internet. Meta already did Or rather, we did. We are letting tech giants simplify us away from the "horrible complexity of the internet". What Google is doing is giving a final blow to the little left that made us feel that we could call it "internet". We can only hope that this will be a wakeup, that we can look back and think "Google was the final straw that broke the trust, and we finally took the internet back" With a lot of help from age verification laws...

@BalooUriza@social.tulsa.ok.us This is completely opposite of my experience. My mom insisted the internal speakers were "going to be good enough!", couple of days later she asked if I could help get better speakers for her new Samsung TV. Our LG has thin, baseless sound, as did our previous Phillips. We are not "audiophiles", a tiny speaker is being used instead of the built in ones, and sounds so much better... Think there was one LG TV that had somewhat good sound at one point, most is crap. They cut corners where ever they can, there is a reason the smart TV-bits are so crappy. Good speakers would also ruin the "super thin" TV style they push. Well, yah, "having a hifi for audio isn't a thing" is true. @antopatriarca@mathstodon.xyz Oh yah, no question. I can see how my answer was a bit lacking. But as the mouse came in to "make things easy", keyboard was mostly an afterthought on UI, and not as much part of the "how can we make it easier" mindset as it could/should have been. So, you had menus with submenues with submenues that could be easy to navigate with mouse, but if you wanted to use a keyboard you either had to remember the odd control + something + whatever key combo, or the non-standard keystroke to get you to the menu and and unknown number of arrow clicks. Until the "magic keystroke" that brought up a "search bar" and you could just search for the menu item by starting to type it started to appear. This simplified shortcut is often way faster for me to use than finding the item with the mouse, without remembering more than the name of what I want to do. Sadly, few apps have it. To navigate a web page with keyboard generally means an unknown number of tabs. Vimium showed easier ways are possible. @mahryekuh@hachyderm.io

Not only did it give me a simple way to do front end, it gave me the possibility code front end and backend in the same, simple "all paths covered, no state" way... So not only did it further enhance my frustration about the front end frameworks, it ended up making me dislike the language I use for backend at work as well. :O The Erlang ecosystem is greatly underrated. Gleam just gave a "friendly wrapping" to it, that also could run in the browser :O

A bit more setup involved, and a bit of time to get used to, but once it is done, everything is navigated so much faster. Pulled vim-mapping into all I could. I found using Neovim got just too much hassle, but vim plugin in intellij and vim mode in zed meant a lot less mouse use and much faster editing. The mouse is still an option for things that still is faster to do with mouse... I had to switch a lot from mouse to keyboard due to wrist / arm pains, and not only has it helped my wrist / arms, but I do things a lot more effectively too. But with many pages it is near impossible to work without a mouse. Touch would also be a nightmare for continious use, but fortunately I don't need to use that a lot at work... But no matter the input form, the "elegant, flowing design" ruins so much... There are ways to make apps easier to use AND easier to develop, but they would not "look as good" :/

@antopatriarca@mathstodon.xyz I was a bit timid of setting up vimium, because the idea of vim in the browser didn't seem like much way to make anything simpler. But, it has one keystroke, "f", when pressed, will apply a two character label to ANYTHING clickable on the web page. You then type those two chars to "click" there. The "tab-tab-tab-tab" is a painful way to navigate, way slower then the mouse. So to find a plugin that could be applied to most any page and introduce a way to navigate pages FASTER than with a mouse... Web pages could implement this, with a styling and format more "fitting" for the webpage, and offer a simple, keyboard driven way to navigate. It is these "why didn't anyone think of this before?" shortcuts we get so little of when the main way to navigate is mouse or touch screen. @mahryekuh@hachyderm.io

The feeling of suddenly having the 100 radio channels that have been playing in the background all the time drastically reduced, can make you feel a bit down when you think "how would life have been if I got this sooner". It can be worth preparing for, it did not hit me much but others get that a bit harder. But compared to "I'm hitting a wall, I have less and less energy as I get older, and my coping mechanism depends on me having energy, how am I ever going to manage this much longer?" mindset, I'd say the latter is a lot more likely to ruin your life. @tbortels@infosec.exchange @digitalcortex@mastodon.social

@HennaVirkkunen@ec.social-network.europa.eu I am hoping this is some attempt of sarcasm / irony / joke that I am missing, if so, please make it a bit more clear. "unlocking more than €30 billion in investment." For what? From where? For what purpose? Where shall the resources be taken from? We have laws to reduce the energy use on headlights on cars, because we need to conserve energy. But 7 "AI data centers" is ok? Who would want to invest in projects that have no viable way to make money? Apart from the circular investments between the players in the AI circus turning this into an unsustainable bubble that must burst soon. Unsustainable capitalism isn't ok, just because it is in Europe. Politicians need to understand the practical implications of this. Not just fancy words by corporations eager to squeeze more money out of EU.

@bzdev@fosstodon.org I kinda assume company accounts will use organization logins that avoid the ID requirement. "Sign in with your Microsoft account" -> bypass ID check. Companies in many countries cannot force their workers to do ID verification, so it's a logical assumption that this bypass is there already. @FinFangFoomed@mastodon.social @zackwhittaker@mastodon.social
