@nixCraft Hope this update will not be pushed into Linux Mint as well. Otherwise I will have to switch to different distro tree. I almost don't use slop generators. I requested like 10 images over last 2 years, just out of curiosity what these generators able to do. I don't want to use so called "AI". I may eventually need to do so anyway, but by other reasons. I don't like idea if linux having to scan my face or do other biometric check to decide whether I worthy to use computer I bought & own

I am looking for some #localFirst solution for blog authoring what would publish (all or some) posts to an activityPub server like to a relay, with publishing of new versions of posts as updates. And fetch new posts, comments, mentions, messages, and reactions arrive to my local-first thing as a Feed or an Inbox. Sounds like I want "Fido with formatting and attachments" over #ActivityPub . The #Fido part is avoid need to be "always online", but sync that few times per day when have time for it

@duanegran PS: jokes aside, I just don't get it: so I have a question now: how to pass anatomy exam with ChatGPT? Like this: you got a ticket with question like so: "Please point out the stapes bone of these 10 bones on table?". I guess students would be pissed off very much if they found that there are questions in medicine which are demand anatomy knowledge....

@danirabbit Expected. I expected something like that. First it will be embedded age verification. Than some anti-cheat crap in bios. And it will end literally will special bought expensive "developer credentials", and "disabling sideloading" for PCs, all ended with effectively forbidding software developiment and selling PC and mobile computers with age verifications, anti-cheat crap and without "anti-sideloading protections". "Pre-attestations" PC will be illegal but priceless.

@kims@mas.to Well, if I would be a senator, I would pushed for a law to forbid "PoW consensus mechanisms" (the consensus logic based on who faster compute a solution for an equation or other numeric puzzle). And I would forbid usage of any such logic no matter for what - let it be crypto, voting blockchain or distributed data storage. Just because it causes plenty of problems - from centralization via expensive equipment and plenty of e-waste to scams like these schemes.

restrictions on self-hosting I guess restrictions on self-hosting will be here to stay even after transition to ip6 will be complete, because under reasoning of fight against email spam and so on "residential" ip6 addresses will still be brutally restricted not for technical reason but for sort of "political" reasons. that's why we have DNS Normally DNS is nice thing to have unless when DNS becomes another instrument of censorship & control by removal "political dangerous" domains.

@Baa Your post remind me about other thing I, a person who just see ip6 in news from time to time, heard about IPv6: "There are at least 2 implementations of IPv6 stack, like "China and everyone else". Is that true? I have some question about "You're not meant to remember addresses" Now imagine an admin who would not be able to spot attacker activity in logs, because start & end hexdecimals are the same (address poisoning similar to crypto "addresses" attack). Is it possible in context of ip6?

@nixCraft This is hard because today children have plenty of "mandatory" screen time, plus imagine a school provided (or bought for games) laptop or tablet)? Some children lucky to have own room and own PC (initially for games). Sounds like you suggest to return back to shared computer per family/household? Or I missed something?

When I resolved today conflicts in `package-lock.json` I thought about the tales of "DLL hell" from the WIn32 universe and dotNet.
These tales look like children scaretales compared to the pile of foo and bar the package-lock.json is.
its mere existence happens only because the javascript is not compiled language into java-like or WASM-like form of single binary file per package with all its dependencies, onioned with each compilation of parent package.
Is there other way to avoid package-lock?

@Setok@attractive.space Mastodon is "semi-decentralized", formally speaking, as if your "home server" gone, you "gone too". Decentralization as goal is not reachable, unless you get energy-efficient "infinite storage capacity" and "warp speed" communications for everyone. Still, distinctions between "clients" and "servers" is necessary due practical reasons.

@Setok@attractive.space It is possible to have balanced configuration of semi-centralized protocol where user identity is transferable and independent from servers set and clients data is replicated across multiple servers, in a way that user can rebind to other server if original server is gone, but then user experience and moderation experience can become disaster easily. Eventually Bitcoin will concentrate in 3-4 pools that will control 90-95% of protocol. Also it specialized on cryptocurrency, a narrow niche

@Ruth_Mottram@fediscience.org I guess this is global thing - more and more people concentrate on online sewers such as X if they become what I could call "working poor" - when you have to work 8-10 hours per day, 5 days per week or more, AND spend 1-2 hours daily on commute to/from work, you just don't have time to relax and enjoy life. Sounds like my decision to order less online and buy food instead in places available within 5 minutes of walk fits with pattern of de-onlining of my life the article hints on.

@GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social requirement of age verification is especially disgusting in this sense, because it being sold under "moral sauce", not as some security feature, per se. At same time, instead of adopting some cross-platform standard W3C could create (or already created a draft of), it all become another smelly pit of corporate lobbysts and other forms of corruption.

@bodhipaksa@mastodon.scot And what are REAL, PRACTICAL measures proposed to stop pumping CO2 into atmosphere, that will help? Not signing memorandums. I searching for list of real, practical, doable actions. Not 'reduce emissions for 100500%", but specific real measures. E. g. "upgrade all public transport to electric", or "use material X instead of material Y in construction", "use tech A instead of tech B in industry C"... and so on. All I see regarding climate change, is reports about skyrocketed temp.

@mcc@mastodon.social I got your point, and got a bit intrigued. At least the word "hack" have a long and complicated history, as I see from e. g. here: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hack Like the most this: "to cut or sever with repeated irregular or unskillful blows". And this word have a long path to tech, like since 1955 https://people.howstuffworks.com/word-hack.htm
