Antarctic snows For most of this century, the Antarctic Ice Sheet has been losing mass at a pretty steady rate of around 100 Gigatonnes a year, pushing up global sea levels a small amount (about one third of a millimetre per year in fact, a little less than half the Greenland contribution for example). Antarctica is by far the biggest potential contributor to future sea level rise, so this is the number we all watch rather closely, as we also discussed the other week… http://sternaparadisaea.net/2026/10/06/antarctic-snows/

This, from the European Correspondent, is a very good way of showing that even though they fill a lot of the media time, the far right are very far from the majority in any country (possible exceptions are Poland Hungary), the main question then is how to ensure the majority views are better represented. https://europeancorrespondent.com/en/r/going-far-right

Yes! Please make this film.someone. i would watch it! Casting should include Mads Mikkelsen as Deutsche Bahn boss trying to work how to get the crossing through Hamburg to work on time .. https://mastodon.online/@Pepijn/117263597189188108 Pepijn@mastodon.online - I would seriously enjoy watching this movie btw. It can become a proper feel good story about two young people on a shared (connected digitally, then physically) adventure. And by traveling by train it can also be a very #european story. Traveling by train also makes for an excellent opportunity to show lots of relatable human interaction on the way, both on trains and in the places along the way. Anyway. I'd watch it. #film #europe #train

I have been slowly moving away from US controlled tech, the remaining bits are ones I can't control really: banking + payments, DK state ITs love affair with microsoft, apps needed to access state services.
And if someone can come up with a way to persuade teenagers this is cool. That would be nice.
Of course what the piece misses is the huge commercial reliance on the back end stack.

We desperately need #Eurostack.

Have just started using Ente for secure, privacy focused photo back up and organisation. So far I am actually pretty impressed. It's lightning fast and very easy to navigate - and I have tens of thousands of photos that it's definitely helping me to organise and search through easily. And share with non-Ente users too. It's miles better than Flickr as a UI experience. This is a test period before I decide if I migrate rest of family too. However, I was under the impression the company was German/Dutch but it unfortunately appears to be US incorporated - even though the servers are supposed to be in NL, F and DE. It just makes me very suspicious that at some point the company will be sold off and the creeping enshittification will start again. It is very frustrating. I could but am not very keen to self host. I have far too many other things going on in my life for that. But it does look like immich or memories for nextcloud is the only other good option. And this probably epitomises why most people just stick with (mostly US) big tech. It is so much easier and less effort than working out what the alternatives are.

Narwahls are critically dependent on the marginal ice zone in Northern Greenland. "it provides both feeding opportunities and refuge from predators. Continued loss of seasonal sea ice is therefore expected to alter narwhal movement patterns, potentially increasing fjord residency and reducing inter-fjord movements. Such behavioural shifts could have cascading ecological effects, altering prey dynamics and reducing genetic exchange among regional narwhal groups." My colleagues do *such* cool research.. . https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-026-53787-8

An interesting aspect is that for the first 2 weeks, the young people at efterskole have all their screens taken away. And apparently this is a popular choice among the teenagers themselves https://www.efterskolerne.dk/om-efterskoleforeningen/nyheder/skaerm/unge-oensker-en-pause-fra-skaermen-paa-efterskolen/ https://fediscience.org/@Ruth_Mottram/117064929859511737 Ruth_Mottram - Dropping one of the teenagers off at efterskole today, every 4th car on the motorway has a bike on the back, presumably also with teens efterskole-bound. It's a rite of passage and also a kind of reverse migration to the countryside away from the city. *Efterskole is an optional year, usually at a boarding school between basic school and 6th form/further education (in British terms). Around 40% of Danish kids do it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efterskole

Five good things instead of three today:

  1. Passed mid term project review with flying colours, technical officer proclaimed himself "impressed" (phew).
  2. Visited super cool facility at DTU and learned a lot about measuring sunlight. Hopefully the start of some interesting new collaborations
  3. Took my 2 wonderful teens out for vegan hotpot dinner in Vesterbro to celebrate end of their exams.
  4. Lay out in garden listening to the blackbirds and identified 5 separate bee species within 10 mins
  5. Tea and TV on the sofa with aforementioned teens just relaxing.

Perfect day really. #threegoodthings

And we've done it! The all time Danish heat record of 36.4C broken with 37C, the previous June record (from1947) beaten by a full 1.5C. Also warmest tropical night on record and earliest crossing of 30C (well before midday) also set. The previous all time heat record was set in August 1975* in Holbæk. So, Yay is, I guess? *Not a typo for UK readers, 1976 was record there, 1975 was warmer in Denmark. https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/vejret/37-0-grader-gav-ny-dansk-varmerekord
