Alongside the Fedora 44 release, I’m happy to announce that we have sealed bootable container images ready for testing for the Fedora Atomic Desktops!

Sealed bootable container images include all the components needed to create a fully verified boot chain, from the firmware to the operating system composefs image. This relies on Secure Boot on UEFI systems.

More details at https://fedoramagazine.org/sealed-atomic-desktops-test-images/ and https://github.com/travier/fedora-atomic-desktops-sealed

@josh @swick @pid_eins As far as I know, the cap-std crate (https://github.com/bytecodealliance/cap-std) does what is explained in the blog post, using an API that is close to the standard library. We use it a lot in bootc and related projects.

@thibaultamartin@mamot.fr I'm pushing for changes. Please send the complaints my way or in the tracker. It helps me justify changes if I can point at user issues: https://forge.fedoraproject.org/atomic-desktops/tracker/issues

@knurd42 I'm currently writing the post with the highlights for the release 🙂. I mentioned those two removal here to give a another heads up and reduce surprise. Development is definitely not slowing down. Progress is mostly happening in bootc and we have great features coming (composefs backend, UKI support, new installer Live ISO). Some will be available right away, some will require us to complete the transition to bootable containers first.

@bard There is FUSE version 3 and maintained applications have moved to it. I don't know specifically about sshfs but it is likely using that now.

@Scott_Trakker The object store in the DevConf.cz presentation is pure composefs. It looks a lot like ostree because they share the same ideas. The plan is to eventually replace ostree completely in bootc.

@Scott_Trakker You can export the desktop entry and update it to run the application. Distrobox also has integration for that. The Application will run in the container but it still has access to all your files.

@alwayscurious I definitely did not suggest that in my talk and we are not competing with Universal Blue. The idea behind the comparison was to look for what they are doing that works well and see if we can do it as well.

@aruiz@mastodon.social Interesting! That will likely be useful to standardize our efforts on Confidential Computing setups. As you note in the end, UKI support would be a great next step for that.
