fun fact: obsidian can form an edge ~10 atoms thick, roughly 100 times finer than steel

formats evolve over decades, apps over months, intelligence is evolving every day

in terms of pace layers "file over app" defines priorities: invest deeply in proven formats, and don't expect anything at the intelligence layer to last very long

Moderating the Obsidian Reddit has become a nightmare. It looks like at least 50% of the activity is coming from bots. For now we've been able to somewhat successfully curb it with various automated rules, but the volume is only increasing.

Defuddle now has a website!

This means you can use Defuddle anywhere to get the main content of a page in Markdown format.

You can simply add "defuddle.md" before any URL, use it via curl, Skills, CLI, or add it to your app via NPM.

The new iOS share sheet in #Obsidian lets you save YouTube transcripts, and content from within other apps. Everything is converted to durable Markdown files.

Try it in Obsidian 1.13 (beta)

New policy from #Atlassian:

Unless you opt out by August 17th 2026, data from Jira and Confluence will automatically be used for AI training. Some data cannot be opted out at all on some plans.

Defuddle now returns Youtube transcripts!

Paste a YouTube link into defuddle·md to get a markdown transcript with timestamps, chapters, and pretty good diarization

...or if you just want to read it, try the new Reader mode in #Obsidian Web Clipper powered by Defuddle

Obsidian Web Clipper now lets you manage highlights, and stays in Reader mode when you click links.

It's such a pleasant way to browse the web. You can control the colors, fonts, and easily copy anything to Markdown.

Obsidian Reader also works on mobile using Safari on iOS or Firefox on Android.

You can set it as the default option when opening Web Clipper.

mature things tend to get pressured into being less weird over time, so if you're starting from scratch your advantage is that you can be very weird

if you don't start weird you're probably trying to compete inside the local maximum of something more boring than you could be

One thing that makes Obsidian Reader insanely difficult to build is that websites are full of bugs and bad HTML/metadata that I have to work around

e.g. here New Scientist defined author as "#author.fullName}" in the metadata but Obsidian Reader still gets the correct one

you can make something in a few days but will you commit to maintaining and improving it for the next few years?

If you are using MCP to access your data, you are trusting that third party with unencrypted access to your data.

Third-party MCPs are not an option if you value privacy. End-to-end encryption makes MCP effectively useless.

My top ten tips for #Obsidian Bases

Obsidian uses local files, so all your standard terminal commands work for editing/moving/searching/etc

what #Obsidian CLI adds is everything else:

- interacting with the UI
- Obsidian's internal functions, e.g. base queries
- deterministic results like the "orphans" command
- easily create a personal plugin now that your agent can access devtools, console, screenshots, eval, etc

See the CLI docs!

It's not because your agent can do something with 12 tool calls and 20k tokens that it should.

For example, #Obsidian CLI has a command called "orphans" that finds files with no incoming links.

Now your agent can get a deterministic answer in 1 millisecond instead of 4 minutes.

The future is not creating a power drill from scratch for every task. It's making reliable tools that can easily adapt to the task.

A power drill provides motorized torque in a handheld format. It's more malleable than a screwdriver because you can change the bits.

Replying to
@gnyman@infosec.exchange it could have been faster but it seems reasonable given how narrow the issue is and how complex the deeper fix was (not just upgrading a dep but adding new approval flows for certain behaviors, which take a while to fully test across platforms) you also have to consider that every library is being bombarded with exotic, esoteric, and often poorly verified AI-generated vulnerability reports right now — as a small team it makes prioritizing your time difficult

@alcojor_comic Defuddle doesn't use AI, no. The code is open source so you can look at how it works here: https://github.com/kepano/defuddle That said, the transcripts come from YouTube and I think they use AI to generate them? At the end of the video I show how to use Web Clipper's Interpreter to generate a summary of the transcript, but that's optional.

@gnyman@infosec.exchange Web Clipper uses Obsidian URI (the obsidian:// protocol) to open Obsidian and create the note, but there is no way for Obsidian to know if that was intentionally triggered by you. So it's asking to confirm that you want to create that note. It's directly related to the question you asked. https://obsidian.md/help/uri
