Hyperlocal public servant for small areas of London. Work on democratic data in democratic places. Enjoys trying to introduce osm into local services (tricky) and local services into osm (also tricky). Getting into all manner of situations campaigning for better addresses. fsfe four freedoms pic cc-by-sa

RE: @nateb@mastodon.thenewoil.org
A fine conversation, I appreciated the way Cindy deconstructed the thinking behind the original declaration of independence into its utopian and practical elements:) also enjoyed the section on how they make privacy a team sport and share the burden of outrage, including the ability of @evacide@hachyderm.io to channel this through wider public discussion.

@bart@floss.social The camera on this fairphone 5 is a bit of a potato, but I'm glad you noticed the Monet influenced composition!

@Edent@mastodon.social so sorry to hear there's spam on matrix. it's been safe so far for me since 2019. i've enjoyed using it to tempt loved ones towards the idea of respectful technology, and found it useful at #fosdem when one of our speakers left their spectacles in a devroom; the next session used our matrix area to contact us and reunite said glasses with their eyes. i really like it for voice and video calls, and not sure what else to use? for chat @delta is v nice.

@harry_wood What a beautiful bit o' bash #! I bet it looks great when it's echoing away, and it even makes GDAL seem nice to use.

@harry_wood the leaflet cluster markers plugin is so easy to use, the rendering so speedy, and the animations so satisfying that i guess it gets used gratuitously almost everywhere people are making maps - I'm certainly guilty of overusing it! Still, I agree that a shed load of markers is much more instructive (once they've loaded) than some floaty numbers.

The whole thing is great, but I especially enjoy the three parter "Before and after"
"Is there a day in your life that splits your life in two
Good days and bad days, a day when all your dreams came true
I used to measure time from the centre of a hole
Before and after, two parts become a whole"

@harry_wood@en.osm.town people like Nigel Shadbolt from the open data institute have campaigned to #FreeThePostcode and James O'Malley got a minister interested, however without Royal Mail going democratic, our nation's location infrastructure remains exclusive. OS have a few technical partners that can get addresses right, but for the standard to work across systems, inclusive licensing would provide a much needed common ground. Standards only work when people can use them.

@harry_wood that's a beautiful dot density map. if only they were as easy to make as clustermaps. i'm curious how you made these tiles?

@harry_wood@en.osm.town Thanks for highlighting this. Ten years ago I hopefully took up the "let's get addresses" right challenge as the problem is already solved: we have definitive addresses for the British Isles. But... Royal Mail are private, and they hold IP on postcodes. This has turned public interest addressing into a labyrinth. OS have gone down the partnership route, and public services can devolve access to contractors, but for Owen's excellent idea to work #FreeThePostcode would be needed first.

@harry_wood@en.osm.town Thanks, what a fantastic read! It leads me to wonder... if postcodes, which are the only blocker in this situation, can be omitted, then maybe there's a way forward?! So what to use instead - I wonder if an open postcode alternative that encodes the UPRN with some spatial clues could work. I made a non-spatial word encoder last year, https://joeldn.srht.site/site/post/mnemonic-place-encoder.html but an encoding that reveals something about the location itself will be my next move I think.

worth reading the comments and noting the date: 25 Feb 2025 - I wonder what this coincides with... not that it makes any difference - when trying to open the FAQs on my once beloved install of Firefox, the browser crashes; says it all really. Still, soon we'll be able to slop out a browser with exactly the features needed 🤷

@Edent@mastodon.social indeed! fosdem discourse was alive and well on mastodon; #matrix we mainly used to discuss ventilation, rounding up speakers, lost property etc, but yes, not so much debating there - user experience being a likely reason.
still, matrix pitch as sovereign tech, and for this reason may find a role in government. Their corporate structure may also help in this regard compared with say xmpp.
